Ahhh ! 21st January 1986 ... Asked a girl out in the Ice Rink . Been together now 35 years & Married 27..... with an 18 year old Son . where has the time gone . & yes it was much better then .
This takes me back, I was 12 at the time. This would have been the days I started to get my own freedom to explore my home town on my own. A lovely trip down memory lane. Thanks for uploading, and I hope you have more to share in future. I wish more folk would record scenes of everyday life like this. It seems like nothing important at the time, but now looking back some 32 years later, everything has changed, and this is the only record we have of it, moving pictures and sound. Funny hearing the lads voice "its it going to be on the telly?" - the answer should have been "no lad, its going to be in the Internet, on a website called UA-cam, and folk from all over the world can watch it when they want to, on a device in their pocket" - The kid could not have imagined. Brilliant! Thanks again.
I used to be a lifeguard at the BIC swimming pool during this period, great times. The council double crossed the public by closing it. Part of the BIC being built was to have public amenities available including the Pool to give the locals something for their tax money. The presence of the Pool was the justification to tear down the old baths and build the ridiculous IMAX which failed hard. The structure of the pool was never dismantled, underneath that seldom-used extra conference hall is a void where the pool and wave machines were
They built Littledown and the two pools weren't necessary. I was working at Environmental Services at the time and used to test the water for the council. Littledown was a much better venue in every way. The previous Bournemouth baths were a fire risk, ironically, and there was a lot of asbestos and all sorts used in the construction. The BIC was always seen as a temporary arrangement but is fondly remembered.
I remember it from a few years before this. Mid 70s. It was a classy place. The Royal Bath Hotel was one of the best hotels outside London at the time. The big swimming pool in the centre was still there then where they had The Aqua Show. I saw it twice. Some of the performers were incredibly beautiful and brilliant swimmers and divers. A magical experience. Saw Val Doonican at The Pavilion, where a little known magician called Paul Daniels was also on the bill. Fantastic times. And the sun shone every day.
Find memories of Bournemouth, southbourne, boscombe, mudeford, my Nan used to live in tuckton , spent many holidays in the park playing crazy golf , taking trips on the ferry, to Christchurch, so much freedom, dad used to love hengersbury head, kite flying, the cafe
Just watched this video and stunned to see myself and my two sons in the BIC swimming pool. How wonderful. Is there anymore of this clip? Love seeing Bournemouth as it used to be. 😊👏
Smashing video, thanks for sharing. I was 18 at the time. It's great to see all those now classic cars looking nearly new. Town centres were so much nicer then. Sadly, the nice people now shop in out of town retail parks, leaving the town centre in a downward spiral of beggars & drunks.
Thanks for the video Rod. I’m too young to remember that you could drive through the square and weird to see buses driving up Old Christchurch Road! But shows you how great Bournemouth looked back in the day.
Sorry for going on... But like to also add to say thanks to Rob for sharing this lovely video showing how bournemouth looked back in the good old 80s. 👊
We visited there last week, did the Zigzag walk & had fish n chips in The Hop inn,ex Sydney House hotel ,St Miichaels Rd,up to 1976 from 1966,my parents even had their honey moon there,i loved the swimming shows ' the swimming baths, clowns on bicycles jumping from the diving boards, sootey & sweep on the pier with Harry Corbet,I always say,"you should never go back to places again!"@ least the buses are still Yellow.
Around 1982 the first drug rehab halfway house arrived in Boscombe and many more followed. The idea was they would get clean in a rehab somewhere, but instead of sending them back among their old friends in some inner city cesspit , they'd do a bit more time in sunny Boscombe. Of course, when they go back on the drugs they still prefer Boscombe and stay. And that's how Boscomber went from being a bit run down to the shameless cesspit it is today.
I've only lived in Bournemouth for 5 years, even now its a lovely place to be, but looking back it does look really nice. So many big seaside towns have been pedestrianized and expensive multistory/private parking replacing street parking. I cant help thinking that shopping centers and pedestrianization cause more long term damage than allowing cars and pedestrians to mix, wonder if there has been any studies on it ???
Have lived in Bournemouth 74 years it was a nice place to stay before 1990 then it slowly went down and down till we have a horrible place it is today /// I an told it the same everywhere // this country has degraded and gone to the dogs //I pity future generations
Used to go into Fortes in Westover Road with my little sister. On odd occasions Charles Forte would be serving , it was 1961 and Bournemouth is so different today.
Bournemouth had a lovely holiday feel about it, clean, calm & relaxed. Almost a Miami feel some said. Westover Road was classy & there was the Pavilion Theatre & Ballroom further down with top shows. Not far away is Sandbanks with all the yachts. I left in 1970. I daren`t go back if it`s as bad as people now say. Whatever happened to it?
Visited Bournemouth about 8 years ago went out for a random drive and and ended up in Boscombe thought we got lost and ended up in London it was the pits.
I lived in Christchurch from 82 to 87. My mum worked in Boscombe. That was a dump then. Full of unemployed Scousers. The rest of area was much nicer though than today. I think that Boscombe was a premonition of how Bournemouth would turn out.
Kinda sad seeing the old people walking around- as you know full well they wouldn't be here anymore. Yet weirdly to me the 80s doesn't feel as long ago as it really was.
Bournemouth now consists of boarded up shops, homeless people and over priced parking places. Its in a sad state through years of neglect on the part of councilors. The roads are a state and you can't even see the road markings in some places. I'm hoping that now BPC councils have merged some money may be spent to bring this little sea side town back to life
Looks familiar...then a brand new Austin Princess drives out of the BICC 🤣 Currently there are UA-cam vids being posted about the abandoned Odeon (Gaumont) on Westover Road - absolutely trashed inside. Maybe a metaphor 🙁
I am sorry can you please tell where it's that swimming Poole?Because i get moved to Bournemouth 2 years ago,and I still don't no much about Bournemouth.
Much of the town centre has been pedestrianised and free car parking is almost non-existent. Result: A full quarter of shops in the town centre are now boarded and closed. Well done, councillors and civil servants.
Er...you're forgetting the Internet and out of town shopping centres. Car users were a fraction of those who used bmth town center...at its peak the parking capacity in the town was not that big.
Oh I don't know, I met Cannon and Ball in the crappy cafe in Bournemouth station, and Debbie McGhee in the Westover Wimpy. The barrel had already been scraped through and we were out the other side 🤣

1986 summer in Bournemouth i will never forget , always has a special place in my heart

Brilliant video Rod. I lived there in the 80's and just as I remember it. Sadly not the same place now, it used to be a nice clean fun place to live.

Remember it well. Those days gone forever.
Great film. Brought back lots of happy memories of my home town. 😊
Great memories of driving through the square!
Great! My grandma bought me my first cassette tape recorder at Dixons in 1970 as a birthday present.

Oh please keep sharing about Bournemouth! 💚
Try to film in a swimming baths today, and you'd get arrested !
Good .And u should be arrested
The council demolished the long established Olympic size swimming baths and built a play-pool that last just a few years.
@@xbxxbx9937 moron
You can see that the rot was setting in even back then. To see the town today makes you want to weep.
I worked in the sign trade in Bournemouth from 1969-90.
It's great fun spotting my work, as nearly all have now gone.
An online article in today’s Bournemouth Echo (3/1/2021) of this video brought me here.
I remember this as a kid, what a sithole it is now
and now even more of a shithole full of the worse kinds of shit imaginable
My old home town. These are great videos.
This is amazing by the way. Loved all the old cars.
Lived there from 1983-1995, real blast from the past

Lots...pedestrianisation works but is often overwhelmed by other changes in the retail landscape like online. It's well researched.
my childhood... it really does look old. i remeber how empty the roads were. its totally changed now.
I was lucky enough to live in Bournemouth for four years until moving to Surrey in 2019. Still miss the place every day.
Why don't you move back there then ?
not really that long ago but so very different...a nicer place to live in many ways
34 years...half a lifetime! 😳
5 years later a fucking cesspit
Very interesting. Funny how the clothes fashions have changed. Lots of shops. People were happier in those pre pandemic days.
Have lived in Bournemouth 74 years it was a nice place to stay before 1990 then it slowly went down and down till we have a horrible place it is today /// I an told it the same everywhere // this country has degraded and gone to the dogs //I pity future generations
I remember the skating rink on Westover road - not that I could skate and Fortes. Happy days - life goes way too fast.
Used to go into Fortes in Westover Road with my little sister. On odd occasions Charles Forte would be serving , it was 1961 and Bournemouth is so different today.
@@vulgivagu it really has changed a lot.
U see no one on their phones just getting on with life now u look now a days...
...says someone now looking at their phone 😂
I love your taste in music ...what sounds like The Partridge Family, then Simon and Garfunkel followed by an instrumental of "Memory" :)

0:27, back when it was the cinema... Aw I miss that
Was 19 and worked in the Victory Sporting Club Casino.. good days though been younger helped
Love the part where the lad asks if it’s gonna be on tele 📺 3:10
Visited Bournemouth about 8 years ago went out for a random drive and and ended up in Boscombe thought we got lost and ended up in London it was the pits.
Yeah Boscombe started going downhill in the 90s. It's even worse now
In the 70s there used to be a milk bar think it was called the owl cafe anyone remember, in boscombe with bar stools
It looked so much better then. I’ve lived in Bournemouth since 1993 and it’s a terrible dump now.
I lived in Christchurch from 82 to 87. My mum worked in Boscombe. That was a dump then. Full of unemployed Scousers. The rest of area was much nicer though than today. I think that Boscombe was a premonition of how Bournemouth would turn out.
wow nice to see jewel of the nile at the local cinema
Kinda sad seeing the old people walking around- as you know full well they wouldn't be here anymore.

Wow so much better back then, awful now, I've moved here at the wrong time 🤷♂️

You missed something very obvious
For god's sake move! This whinging from bmth locals is unbearable 😂
Look at all those British made CARS 🚘 THEY GIVE THE ALL THE JOB AWAY 🇬🇧🇬🇧
I was thinking that: not a BMW in sight!
Excuse me, is this going to be on the telly?
Nah, in thirty years it will be on You Tube.
love the cars. How much would they be worth today? Heaven knows.
@0:27 - What does that say above "THE JEWEL OF THE NILE" ?
Got it...it says "JAGGED EDGE" !
"Excuse me, is this gonna be on the telly?" "NO! Sod off, you nosy brat !"
😂 at least he said 'excuse me' 😂😂
@5:02 - wow, a teal coloured Morris Marina hatchback ! How much would that be worth today ??
About as much as it's time point! About £5.02! Lol

I drove a 1.3 litre Marina Coupe at that time.
No pianos ever fell on it.

It is still a beautiful place. I will never agree with the padestrianisation schemes, but that's a cancer all councils suffered from in the early 90s.
"Is that going to be on telly" lol that kids probably in his mid 40s by now
I am sorry can you please tell where it's that swimming Poole?Because i get moved to Bournemouth 2 years ago,and I still don't no much about Bournemouth.
The swimming pool was in the BIC, unfortunately they’ve now closed it 🤔
Thank you Rod Bean...For to reply to my message...Have a good day
No beach shot????
All I see is how many empty shops there are now
Plot twist he was filming with a mobile phone s20
When double yellow lines meant....not a lot.
