I would add the film THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (1971). It is a smart and suspenseful sci-fi movie that holds up. It is based on the novel by Michael Crichton.

Also Colossus: The Forbin Project, Phase IV and A Boy and His Dog. I personally think Zardoz is worth revisiting as well, remembering that it's a satire. For you fans of obscurities (but admittedly not as good as the other films mentioned), check out The Final Programme, if you can find it.

Colossus: The Forbin Project is so damn relevant today, and scary, too. Completely gripping from the start - until a n unfrortunately
      weak ending.

The Black Hole is actually a much better movie than you'd expect from Disney. The only thing that lets it down are the cutsie floating robots, which introduce an element of chilishness. That and the oh-so-Christian ending with literal heaven and hell. Other than that, it;s great. The zombified remains of the Cygnus crew are extremely creepy, and the Cygnus sip itself is a marvellous design. It moves completely away from the classic design of ships, and looks more like the Victorian Crystal Palace in space: all ironwork and glass.

Westworld - I've always loved this movie. I wish someone had a copy of the TV edit, which had extra scenes that aren't in the theatrical version. I saw it once on TV, and I'd love to see it again, just for the novelty of it.

Demon Seed . I think it failed because it was released the same time as STAR WARS . Also Capricorn One was a victim too .

I'm glad you picked Beneath the Planet of the Apes. I love these "distant future after a nuclear war" movies, and this one does it beautifully. The way that Brent discovers the old subway station, and then the buried remnants of Manhatten, with melted street signs and vehicles, and them remains of St Patrick's Cathedral. The idea that humans have become mutants with enhanced intelligence and telepathic powers, but whop worship a nuclear missle, is inspired; the church service to the Divine Bomb is great. It also ties directly to a deleted scene in Battle for Planet of the Apes - as does the fact that the mutant leaders are all named Mendez.

Pretty good list. I would suggest the following 70s sci-fi films for additional consideration as holding up very well even in the 2020's:
    Colossus: The Forbin Project
    Dark Star
    A Boy and His Dog

  • @joestrike8537

I think one reason "Star Wars" became such a phenomenon was that myself and so many fellow sci-fi nerds in the mid-1970s were longing for a set-in-the-future 'space opera' to pick up where "Star Trek" left off. Films like "Logans Run" were a let-down from that perspective, and the "Space:1999" TV series (marked down from "2001 A Space Odyssey" the joke went) had its moments but never ignited, and other than production design "The Black Hole" was an utter disaster. "Star Wars" totally filled that void which is why it became a phenomenon, and eventually a Disney "exploit it to death" property. (Story is Lucas wanted to remake "Flash Gordon" but couldn't get the rights, which would've spared us the endless, entire "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" SWCU.)

THX1138 in its original format on video only. Once again Lucas had to ruin it with SPFX updates in CGI when people are quite happy with the original.

I'd add Phase IV, A Boy and His Dog, Thd Andromda Strain, Colossus: The Forbin Project, and Demon Seed. I prefer Escape from the Planet of the Apes as far as the Apes sequels go. It's a clever reverse of the first film with a nifty time paradox. Logan's Run is not nearly as good as the book. The characters are not nearly as smart as the book versions. I cringe whenever I think of Michael York holding his hand out towards the Sun and says "It's warm". The book has a much better ending (there actually is a Sanctuary and it's a space station orbiting Earth). The book also has a neat twist. The Black Hole was terrible. It's one redeeming feature is John Barry's score. Neil deGrasse Tyson said it was one of the least scientifically accurate Sci Fi films ever made.

A little too mainstream for my liking, I was hoping for a few more obscure movies to appear. Oh, and A Clockwork Orange, though set in the future, can't really be considered sci fi, can it...?

I have several words to describe A Clockwork Orange, none of them are "sci fi" and few of them are postable on a YT comment section. Irredeemable sh*te will do for starters, one of the worst movies I have ever seen......

    • @Gloobey
      @Gloobey Місяць тому

Well, you are of course entitled to your opinion but I would have to say that, if A Clockwork Orange ranks amongst the worst movies you've ever seen, then you probably haven't seen enough movies....

@@Gloobey I admit I don't watch a lot of movies, but I still maintain that it was awful. A little background. My best friend and I were both too young to see it the first time round, and it was re released in time for his (50th?) birthday, so I paid for us both to go see it, as we were both curious as to what the fuss was about. Talking after we came out, it emerged that we had both thought it was utter garbage! I was only staying with it because I thought he was enjoying it, and it was his "birthday present", he only stayed because I had paid and he didn't want to seem ungrateful. I can't pick out any particular aspect of it that I thought was bad, it was all just....rubbish.

@@christopherdean1326 Like I said, I have no issues at all with you not liking ACR but do yourself a HUGE favour and give it a second chance. It is challenging, innovative and audacious film making of the highest order. Only Kubrick could have made it and it certainly wouldn't get made today, everyone plays it too safe.

The Black Hole isn't a good film, Beneath the Planet of the Apes is a weak entry due to a first half that merely repeats all the beats of the first. Escape from or Conquest of would have been better choices. Other possible choices: A Boy and His Dog, Demon Seed, Zardoz, Time After Time, Solaris, Rollerball.
