@Gerben De V. It depends on the plug. The smallest Anderson Plug is 50A, but they have 125A and 175A plugs. Having said that, very, very few of the Anderson plugs (of any size) I've seen are cabled for the Amp draw over the (return) run length.

That would require a whole extra inverter, either 230v to 40v, or 12v to 40v, and add heavily to the cost. It would also pull way too much power from any 12v car accessory circuit - you'd need a direct hookup to the starter battery for it to work. This is cool as hell.. for everyone making jokes in the comments, if you don’t understand why something exists then it obviously wasn’t made for you. Lots of people work in very remote places, off grid and still need a warm lunch. No one is going to climb down a massive windmill or drive 5 hours into town from a logging site to grab a hot burrito from the convenience store. Being able to have something hot to eat is huge deal when you work hard or are miserable… it’s a small comfort that makes hard work bearable. Sure, it’s expensive and niche.. but it’s probably bulletproof and made in small numbers for now. That doesn’t mean the idea itself isn’t good. Again, this wasn’t made for everyone, if you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine. It obviously wasn’t made for you! It was made for the guy who saw it and instantly started checking prices because he’s sick of cold coffee, and food. This is also a cool option for vanlife/campers. When the weather is nice just bring the whole microwave outside with you to cook and eat wherever you want!
the oven capacity is also about half the volume of a typical 0.8-1.2KW Mains powered oven, so i recon that has a role to play in the cooking time. I think they could make a wall adapter for it that just occupies the battery slots with a connector the same way the back pack does.
This can be quite helpful for those that are homeless but have a place to store anything they own, such as a storage unit, grab a lunch from the store and take this thing out for lunch, then again I haven't tried doing this yet, but I will report how well it works out once I'm able to try it out.
If there was an option to use a mains power adapter/ genset/ powerstation i would go for one. But only using only 40v batteries is a piss poor design choice considering the runtimes it would be a poor onsite choice. Considering the number of extra batteries you would need onsite, not to mention recharging the bloody things. Thanks for the video, interesting if expensive novelty item really without alt power choice.
Is the wattage rating on an AC microwave both the motor and megnetron combined or is it just the magnetron? I don't know, but this could explain it heating almost as well as an AC microwave with a higher wattage as this does not appear to rotate so it wont cook as evenly hence the, "almost".
The one use case I can see is for camping SPECIFICALLY in the situation that your inverter can charge batteries but not provide enough wattage to run a microwave. You’re basically using the batteries as big capacitors.
The reason it isn’t only half as powerful at 500w is the more compact heating space. A 1-1.2 kW microwave has triple the internal volume to heat up and the microwaves have to travel through more air particles.
Pretty sweet actually. If you had solar panels to plug in to it would be very useful to be able to heat stuff any place no matter what the situation is with the power. If you got creative you could probably even just set it up like a battery bank and just forget about it.
If you have a adjustabe power supply..buck boost system. You could run on ac if you tech it out. Maybe at least over 1000 watts at 40 volts power supply. More watts the better for efficiency.
Are those 500 W RF? Most modern stationary microwaves I have come across recently tends to max out at around 800 W RF, but they are rated as maybe 1200 W on the electrical end. So if you get 500 W RF it may be a great idea. It does need a way to connect it to mains power and/or car power (at least a charging mode for the latter), but if we get that in the next iteration, I am more than happy to overlook the omission in this version. This is a great idea, despite having a few design flaws.
Cool! Now I could just pop that microwave in a backpack, weighing ”so little”, and then buy some cheap hotdogs during a nice bicycle ride with the family. And it’s so small…AND cheap also!😉 I love the video, just my kinda swag.😉 Still, in a car, maybe a small 50€ microwave and a 12-to-220V converter would function and be a little cheaper?
Gimmick gift for executives/ partners or VERY niche stuff for actual workers... At remote building/ emergency site there will be a generator. And at a non-remote one there will be some source of 230V.... Only use this could have is medium range job site (if it's 15 minute drive home, then you just go home for dinner, if it's in middle of nowhere then you have a generator...) where there is no power because of a fault, or unanticipated need to turn off power to do work safely, and you didn't bring a generator. But for some reason brought this microwave and food that needs to be heated up. 10/10 cool stuff
I am trying to figure out what you would need that for. Makita is a elecrical tool maker, making tools for construction sites, Workplaces and stuff like that. Everywhere you would advertise such a thing for has to have electricity anyway. A normal Microwave is way cheaper and more powerfull. Ofcourse there would be niche activitys like camping you could use that for but then you would have to pack about 15 Batteries to really get work done. I think Makita just made it for the memes like the Kettle and i love them for it!
i have to say overall i think this is a great idea! where i live a lot of construction goes on and i legit see people with cheapo microwaves with extension cords on the back of pick up trucks i would look at this as a good investment if i worked construction

The future of camping will have a full kitchen of battery appliances for dinner lol
Have you ever tested the makita hr009 thinking about getting it but can't find any reviews
Not yet.
How does it make popcorn?
Pretty sweet actually. If you had solar panels to plug in to it would be very useful to be able to heat stuff any place no matter what the situation is with the power. If you got creative you could probably even just set it up like a battery bank and just forget about it.
Introducing… the Makita battery killer!
RIP 40v
I believe that also applies to the Makita Coffee Maker.
Makita adopting quick charge cellphone battery technology will be a game changer.
If you have a adjustabe power supply..buck boost system. You could run on ac if you tech it out. Maybe at least over 1000 watts at 40 volts power supply. More watts the better for efficiency.
If you put in 2 batteries from the start does it drain down one first and then swap over or does it drain both batteries equally?
Usually it’s one at a time
Truly a game changer for the future homeless
Makita just changed the game... 😱
Milwaukee needs a Microwave Packout.
Too cool. C'mon Milwaukee, put out your own version
I'm disabled now but having this on a job site would have been amazing
What's next, cordless induction cooktop? Wow! Overlanding or carcamping will never be the same.
Love it.Getting one for my motorcycle. 😄
Puff the pickle, rock the double though. 👍👍
A lot of times here in the states it would be cold anyway the fries to.
Omg 😱 gosh this is very interesting as I live off grid 😊
Gimmick gift for executives/ partners or VERY niche stuff for actual workers... At remote building/ emergency site there will be a generator. And at a non-remote one there will be some source of 230V.... Only use this could have is medium range job site (if it's 15 minute drive home, then you just go home for dinner, if it's in middle of nowhere then you have a generator...) where there is no power because of a fault, or unanticipated need to turn off power to do work safely, and you didn't bring a generator. But for some reason brought this microwave and food that needs to be heated up.
10/10 cool stuff
That was fun, but I don't think I'd get one. We do use our corded microwave a lot though - the idea isn't bad.
Sounds like you aren't their target market...
When will Makita bring out a battery powered battery charger? That would be truly useful.

So when does the 18v X2 version come out?
I thought the low end microwave are over 900 watts. But it's on and off system which has a turner.
Finally a way to heat my food at work
Neat, but what's the use case for this?
I am trying to figure out what you would need that for.
Makita is a elecrical tool maker, making tools for construction sites, Workplaces and stuff like that.
Everywhere you would advertise such a thing for has to have electricity anyway.
A normal Microwave is way cheaper and more powerfull.
Ofcourse there would be niche activitys like camping you could use that for but then you would have to pack about 15 Batteries to really get work done.
I think Makita just made it for the memes like the Kettle and i love them for it!
40v at 800W is atleast 20A drawn. How many minutes with these two battries can you microwave for ?
All the info for all battery sizes is in the video.
Makita is awesome!
still more powerful than the cheap microwave at work
I would love to take it apart to see how it operates!! 🤩🤩😄😄😅
If they make it a hunch bigger, you can wear it as as backpack and store your stuff inside. Australian backpackers will go nuts
i have to say overall i think this is a great idea! where i live a lot of construction goes on and i legit see people with cheapo microwaves with extension cords on the back of pick up trucks i would look at this as a good investment if i worked construction
All construction workers: makita when are you releasing your framing nailer?
Makita: yes our lanturn and microwave are coming soon.
Yep and inverter/generator
ill wait for the next version with a turn table built in, priority. cant beleive it doesnt have one !!!!
Good microwaves are made without them these days.
You'd need a couple of Sherpa's to carry that and the batteries you'd need for a weekend trip
Finally a great portable microwave for construction sites! :)
För 1 person
Can it be pressure washed?
