    As someone who did sculpting as a hobby for a while, I can imagine the frustration of redoing and recreating the design over and over again. But it was definately worth it, the JP Rex is iconic and extreamely recognizable

    Hypothetically, they still could incorporate these early designs into official lore, as versions or the earliest attempts in trying to clone a viable T. rex? But like Crichton said in The Lost World about cutting edge technologies, intial yields are very very low and perhaps some of these designs could be recycled in official Jurassic lore as some of the various first attempts to get a viable T. rex, but due to genetic errors, missing or damage segments that couldn't function properly, the early efforts were rather deformed and unhealthy.
    Anyhow, that could have been a creative nod to the works of all the artists into Jurassic lore itself, maybe?

    To be honest the T-Rex design is a classic. because it was genetically engineered it probably wouldn’t look exactly like a T-Rex, even Dr Wu said they might look very different in Jurassic world, so it still gave you the monster version everyone was hoping for and being afraid of it, but at the same time still portraying them as animals which is what Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton was trying to convey.

    • @mgacy2957
      @mgacy2957 2 роки тому +1

      "even Dr Wu said they might look very different in Jurassic world"
      That's just a retcon, a way to explain why the dinosaurs back in the 1993 version, the trademarkable ones, don't look like actual dinosaurs as a means to appease the modern audience that now knows how these animals actually looked like.

    • @wolftal1178
      @wolftal1178 2 роки тому +3

      @@mgacy2957 You’re absolutely right if anything it was a very clumsy way of trying to justify it, although in their defence at the time they didn’t really have much more evidence than the ones they designed. However DNA dictates how we look to our smallest details, if they were mutated and spliced with other genes they would in truth probably have very different characteristics. So it’s not entirely a bad explanation. At least one that’s very plausible. In the book they even went further on into this when Wu wanted to make them look more ferocious, but Hammond wanted them to be as they were which at the time was a very good appearance of them.

The 'Frog Mutant' one definitely gives off more 'classic 1950s dinosaur movie' vibes, and Derrick even posted pre-production photos of a full-size sketch showing that the T-Rex was _initially_ going to walk *upright* before the more up-to-date paleontology knowledge was incorporated into the design process.

      It's honestly kinda irritating watching the fandom demand scientifically accurate dinosaurs in this franchise when they KNOW that genetic engineering altering the dinosaur's appearances was already an established plot point. There are so many dinosaurs designs that are exclusively unique to the Jurassic franchise that scraping them this far into the game for the sake of "accuracy" would be, in my opinion, spitting on the franchise's legacy and iconography. Which is why for me, I'm not particularly critical of dinosaurs in the newer films being scientifically accurate as much as I'm critical of them being well designed. I think the JW designs of the baryonyx, allosaurus, and pteranodons look awful and are among my least favorite Jurassic movie dinosaurs, because they look scrawny, generic and come off as last minute pitches. They don't have that raw, powerful Stan Winston flare. People could argue with the inaccuracy of the JP Spinosaurus, Pteranodons and Dilo, but those dinosaurs were so iconic and well designed during the Stan Winston effects era that they got away with it. At the end of the day, Jurassic Park and Jurassic World are movies, not documentaries. People who demand scientific accuracy in these films after all these years seem to forget this.

    Hey, I found that design process article last year.
    Quite a wild ride. Aside from the brief bit about Bob Gurr and some of the concept art, it was pretty much new info. And occasionally quite weird.

    The T rex's amphibious design almost looks like it could have been from Tim Burton's version of Jurassic Park where it would be an animated horror film.

    Just imagine how bad it would be if Universal chose the more monstrous design. As it gets famous, the media will make out a general Tyrannosaurus as a monstrosity since they would compare it with the InGen rex (I know the final InGen rex is already meant to be a movie monster but it could have been worse). I'm literally imagining the meme of the Golden Lab and the Werewolf side by side and the Golden Lab being the final InGen rex or the accurate version and the Werewolf being the WIP monstrous design. I'm glad Universal used their influence wisely.

    Ethan S., the paleontologist and consultant for Battle at Big Rock (who I'm friends with and who's appeared on this channel) said the same thing about these creative processes. He got to consult and send sketches for references, but in the end they only used like half or 2/3 of the stuff he suggested.

    Klayton, your video on this matter was amazing! Put me right back in the people's minds when designing the T. rex. To me this shows the triumph of team effort. If we got only one individual's input on the design it would probably not be iconic at all. The design we do have, though, is pure genius and derived from ideas from everyone involved, which, I don't know why, feels very comforting and epitomizes what is Jurassic Park all about!

    The Bull T-rex design IMO is the best tyrannosaurus rex portrayed on screen to date.
    I think they could have stuck to the anatomy of the dinosaur according to the fossil - just going off by the AMNH5027 specimen and still have that look the film version rex ended up with but oh well.

    I always love seeing concept art of... well, anything, but especially those of my favorite films and shows. As for these early JP T. rex designs, I kind of like the frog-looking ones for its bizarre appearance and playing around with the gene-splicing concept, and also the more monstrous designs for working with their 'copyright' intentions. But even with all of that in mind, I'm very satisfied with the version we got the franchise. It's just so iconic and a great representation of what defines a T. rex; at least in terms of film designs.

    After this got to say that the designs of the dinosaurs they got to put a lot of effort to it so whether some designs look great or not I got to admit it looks awesome once on screen I mean I can imagine doing that from one design to another it has me go through a lot since I like drawing it goes from one thing to next and it’s crazy but in the end turns out great.

    I would not have minded seeing amphibian features on the T-Rex. It would really have really showed a major flaw in the cloning process and we could have got that scene where Hammond and Dr. Wu argue over researching the accuracy of the dinosaurs.

  • @pirateraider1708

    Yep, that's how it goes. If you try settling on the first draft when trying to make a masterpiece, you're just gonna crash and burn. Going through countless early versions before settling on a final perfect design is the mark of a dedicated professional.
    Also that frog T-rex sounds like it could be cartoonishly silly, yet horrifying to deal with. Just imagine it having a giant frog's tongue that lets it gobble people up from a distance, and it being able to just jump over the electric fences and cut people off from escaping.
    Edit: Also combining the T-Rex roar with a frog's croak would probably turn it into a really loud burp.
