- My first foray into piercing - and lots of hand sanding! A black and gold pierced textured platter rim in beech.
Please be aware that woodturning is a hazardous activity. These videos are only intended to show you what I do - they are not tutorials.

I think you deserve a GOLD medal for the work and your finished piece brother. Love it, great job.
Thanks, Mike - glad you like this one. Bit of a new direction for me. Cheers!
Stewart, this is fantastic! What a beautiful piece!
Thanks, Sludgepump (great name, by the way!) Delighted you like - thanks for commenting and appreciating my work. Cheers!
Another fine piece, thank you Stewart.
Thanks - delighted you like it. Cheers!
Wow loving the holes around the rim great design
Thanks, Terry - it was fun to do this, even if it did take quite a while!
Good job Stewart
I like it. Thanks for the video
Cheers, Steven. Glad you liked it!
Good to see your procedure from start to finish. A pierced bowl rim certainly is something different.😀 ❤️it.
Thanks, Miss Tee...somehow I've not managed to do anymore piercing after this one, though it's always on my list of things to do! Cheers!!
Love the piece !! Great ideas great inspiration.
Thanks, Robert - glad you find the videos interesting!
Great looking piece.
Thanks, Rob - glad you like it!
Another great one
Thanks, David - after all the sanding this one needed my phone didn't recognise my fingerprint! Cheers!!
I like the drilled technique and your results. Always pushing the envelope. Thanks for sharing!
Cheers, Don - this one was a bit time-consuming! Delighted you liked the end result.
That looks like a LOT of work, Stewart! It looks great!
Sooo much sanding but worth it! Looks fantastic 😁
Cheers, Alan - yep, worth it in the end! I'll have to look at some powered sanding alternatives, I think!
I almost didn't watch this because I didn't really like the thumbnail. After watching the process I really like it. Turned out great
Interesting technique. You always come up with new and interesting techniques.
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool video thanks for sharing
Cheers - glad you like it!
This is probably my most fav. to date.
Keep that warped mind of yours going! lol
Thanks, Robert - warped mind still functioning....hope to do some more texturing and colouring today! Cheers
It looks very nice.
I have thought recently about drilling holes in a bowl but the prospect of sanding the holes, for many days or weeks, has put me off!!!
Thanks for a great video.
James
Hi James - it was all done in less than a day! However, even that amount of sanding is rather tedious. If I were to do more of these, I'd definitely find a mechanically assisted way to sand!! Cheers.
Stewart Furini . I understand that the professionals, who do piercing all the time, use dentist's drills. I personally do not think piercing, with a dentist's drill would bring back encouraging memories.
Thanks
James
I know what you mean!
Stunning work once again 😍
Thanks, Linda! Looks like you're working your way through some of my videos. Delighted that you like them. Cheers!
Really enjoyable video! Keep it up!
Nice , I like .
Cheers, Steve! I keep meaning to do more of these...one day!
Another beautiful platter/bowl. You are very talented! I'd have kept the back sprayed/stained, as I think it adds to the integrity of the piece that way. Just my opinion, others are available!
Lovely, patient work, well done ;-) K from Kent
Thanks, Katherine - I think you're right about the back, especially as where the lacquer is still engrained the look isn't great. Cheers!
Hi Stewart. Just discovered you this past week. Great piece of work this, as has all of your turnings. Looking forward to the next vid....Dougster
Thanks for commenting, Doug. Glad you found my channel and my videos are helpful! Cheers!
wish I had 1/2 of your creativity. You amaze me
as all ways it turned out fine in the end but i must say you like to make work for your self but entertaining to the end
Thanks, Barry - it keeps me out of mischief!
Looks very good Stewart I think Dave at Turning works is following you work and it looks like you might have some competition very soon
Cheers, Graham - yep, I know - looking forward to seeing Dave's colouring video that he says will be up this weekend!
Very creative. I wasn't sure at the start what the heck you were doing. But in the end I really liked it. But the back looks unfinished. I would have kept the black on the back.
I agree with you - I thought it would be nice to have more wood showing, but this is crying out for the black going back on!
Wow Stuart you done again a really nice piece I think this is one of your best !!! And the wood was amazing so white so nice contrast with the painting !!! Great work brother !!
Thanks, Kostas - glad you liked this one. It took a bit longer than some others, but I like the end result. Cheers!!
Sehr schön.
Hi Stewart .. laughed like a drain at the opening scene :) :)
That is a real stunner, one of my favourites without a doubt.
great video.
Cheers
Mike
Thanks, Mike - thought about doing a 'You lookin' at me' routine at the end....but couldn't really pull it off!
Interesting method, I could see using the technique in a few different ways. thanks for sharing
Thanks - glad you liked it! Cheers
Stewart you make extremely wonderful pieces!! My Greek friend Kostas Annikas told me about your channel. I watched all your masterpieces in 2 days and i am amazed with your work!!! Well done again! Sakis.
Thank you, Sakis. I'm pleased you like the videos so much and that Kostas pointed you in my direction. Cheers!!
lovely piece.
not keep on the back. I think you should do the same to the back as you did to the front with the texturing and colour and leave the middle wood like the front
I certainly think the back should have either colour or no evidence of colour. The places on the back where the colour has remained look messy. I'm pretty sure the back will end up black like the front! Cheers!
That's a lot of sanding! I barely have the patience to sand a plain bowl, never mind all that malarky. lol
Another beautiful piece Stewart and a true labour of love I reckon too. Do your family remember what you look like? You must have spent most of the week sanding and painting that platter!
As for last weeks piece ............ step away from the drill! XD
Pete Beardsley lol
well said. 😂
Another very interesting piece, you do manage to come up with some interesting ideas. It’s good to see a pierced piece that isn’t wafer thin. Have a look at Betts Metal Sales for cup and ball burrs.
Thanks, Jane - glad you like it. I tend to veer towards chunky! Betts Metal is who I have bought some burrs from. Hope to try them out soon. Cheers!
i wonder if you drilled holes like that and roughly shaped it but then brunt it heavily with a blowtorch, that could look cool
I think it would! Must buy a blow torch!
This one is beautiful, Stewart. However, the very thought of the amount of time it must have taken caused my eyes roll up into my head and I fainted dead away... :-) Clyde
Thanks, Clyde - it was all done in the course of one day, but it take take a while. Hopefully, I'll get faster if I stick with this sort of technique...Cheers!
Awwww, you left out the sanding! Boooo! Lol! Great piece mate! 👍🍺
Sorry, Dave - I could send you the unedited sanding videos???;)
Well... now, where do I even begin? when you started drilling holes in this one, I wasn't quite sure if I was going to like it. But, by the end, I loved it! The blue did help tone it down just a touch and I really agreed with you on that. Now, how are you going to finish it? 💜
Thanks, Tracey - what do you mean finish it? I'm already on to the next dozen projects and we'll be lucky if more than two or three of them get finished!
@@stewartfurini 🤣
Holy man, that was boring. :-) Puns aside, I think the texturing between the holes gave it that extra wow factor. Thanks Stuart, take care.
Cheers, Bryan - Thanks for commenting. The drilling was probably the quickest part of the texture work! It was the sanding that was so tedious!!
I like your ideas and I’m guessing your not far from me but I would like a bit more detail as I’m really new to this turning lark
Thanks for commenting, xxwrd. Do you mean more detail about how the platter was turned or more information about the texturing techniques....or both! I'd be happy to go into more detail, either in a reply or another video. Glad you like the ideas. Cheers!
Really lovely. What is your wood of choice for painting on? I usually use sycamore.
Great piece Stuart - I love your work, and getting a compliment from my friend Annikas is high praise indeed!
I want to purchase my 1st airbrush - do you have any recommendations regarding brand, or anything else I should look for. I have never painted anything on or from my lathe, any tips or suggestions you may have will be much appreciated.

Thanks, Dennis. I started with a cheap one with a very thin airhose as I already had a compressor. This was a false economy. However, as I'm not doing precision aribrush work, I've stayed quite cheap and have bought airbrushes from Amazon for around £15-£20. I have also bought a small compressor and airbrush set that works perfectly for this small scale work that I do. Here's a link to the video I made about this - ua-cam.com/video/Y-d0H4rvNj4/v-deo.html
Others might give you different advice and recommend more expensive airbrushes but I've got good results with these ones. Hope this helps!
Hi Stewart
Now that is a holy piece of work, I had just watch Tim Yoder doing a colourful piece
ua-cam.com/video/VK3PlEUgGVQ/v-deo.html. Good viewing if you are not aware of Tim so then I went to this video. You are both excellent viewing and beat the TV every time.
Keep up the good work.
Regards
Roger
Thanks, Roger - I guess I'd better do something different this weekend, then...I was thinking of doing something like the technique Tim does in the video you give the link for!
