In the Quran , Allah uses the word " dhal and qarnu " dhal ,dhi, and dhu are words used to describe someone or something. On the other hand , qarnu is a word used for 2 or more nations, 2 horns , and used for centuries .. but in the Quran Allah only uses the word qarnu for nations .if you read the Quran . Allah uses is as a nike name for someone . The question is ,who is that person,what was his name ? .the Quran spoke to us , telling us the person is a prophet ,not just a believer,but a prophet. For example in surat Al ambiya . Allah uses the word Dha-nun for prophet yunus . In another place in the Quran, Allah uses the word dhal qifli for prophet zakaraya, dhal haidi for prophet David ,dhul maharij for the ascension of the angels to heaven , Gaira dhi hiwajin for the quran , li yun fiq dhu zati min zatihi for human being, dhu mir'ratin fastawa for angel Gabriel in sural an - najimi.
Now what is the meaning of dhul qarnain?. Allah spoke to us telling us that the person was sent to two nations i.e mankind and jinn kind. He was given the power to control the wind for traveling. I hope you can relate it to prophet sulaiman (A.S). Allah told that dhul qarnain was a prophet , a king who ruled over the western and eastern part of the earth, he was also given the power to make weapons from iron. If you read the story of prophet sulaiman ,he was the only prophet who was a king who ruled over the western and eastern part of the earth , he was a wealthy man at the same time, he also has power to control the wind for traveling, he also make weapons from iron , he has power to punish anybody who disobey him either from the jinn or mankind,so as dhul qarnain.how do we know that dhul qarnain was prophet sulaiman. Because the story is the same . And the Quran also made mention of a boiling lake which looks like an eye which prophet sulaiman traveled to with his wind taking him a journey of two months in a day . Like I said earlier,the word dhul qarnain is a Nike name for a prophet ,jst like dha nun is Nike name for prophet yunus, and dhal qifli a Nike name for prophet zakaraya, dhal Aidi, Nike name for prophet David,so dhul qarnain is a Nike name for prophet sulaiman A.S. so ple let read the Quran ,and make the Quran our primary source before the Hadith ,Hadith should be a secondary source not primary over the quran
