Dhul Qarnayn was actually Prophet Sulaiman alaihi salam.
Here are the dalil/proofs from the Quran itself.
      1️. Kingship
Only two Prophets were mentioned as King in the Quran. Prophet Daud and Prophet Sulaiman Pbut.
      Dhul Qarnayn was a king.
      Qs 18:84.
Surely We established him in the land and granted him means of access to everything.
Prophet Sulaiman Pbuh was also a King.
      Qs 27: 16.
And Sulaiman was Dawood's heir and he said: O men! we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given all things; most surely this is manifest grace.
      Qs.38:35.
He said, “My Lord, forgive me, and grant me a kingdom never to be attained by anyone after me. You are the Giver.”.
      Qs.38:39.
“This is Our gift; so give generously, or withhold; without account.”.
      2. Both were blessed with many great things to help them accomplish their tasks that was to spread the word of god. Missionary and travelled far and wide.
      Dhul Qarnayn -
      Qs 18:85.
So he followed a way, 89. Then he followed a way. 91.And so it was. We had full knowledge of what he had. 92.Then he followed a way.
      Prophet Sulaiman Pbuh -
      Qs 21:81.
And (We made subservient) to Sulaiman the wind blowing violently, pursuing its course by his command to the lands which We had blessed, and We are knower of all things.
Qs.34:12.And for Sulaiman the wind-its outward journey was one month, and its return journey was one month.
      3. Prophethood.
      Dhul Qarnayn -
      Qs 18:86, 87 & 88.
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people. Allah said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."
Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it going down into a black sea, and found by it a people. We said: O Dhul-Qarnayn! either give them a chastisement or do them a benefit. He said: As to him who is unjust, we will chastise him, then shall he be returned to his Lord, and He will chastise him with an exemplary chastisement: And as for him who believes and does good, he shall have goodly reward, and We will speak to him an easy word of Our command. He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment. But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of Paradise, and we will speak to him from our command with ease."
      This verse has the same meaning as in surah Yunus in which Allah Subhanallah ta’ala mentioned as;
      Qs.10:47.
Every community has a messenger. When their messenger has come, judgment will be passed between them with fairness, and they will not be wronged.
When messengers reached a community, they preached Allah’s word and established law and order. Shariah law.
      Prophet Sulaiman Pbuh -
      Qs 21:78 & 79.
And Dawood and Sulaiman when they gave judgment concerning the field when the people's sheep pastured therein by night, and We were bearers of witness to their judgment. So We made Sulaiman to understand it; and to each one We gave wisdom and knowledge; and We made the mountains, and the birds to celebrate Our praise with Dawood; and We were the doers.
      4. Both were able to understand many languages. Polyglot or multi linguistics is an asset for travellers.
Dhul Qarnayn Qs.18:93. Until when he reached (a place) between the two mountains, he found on that side of them a people who could hardly understand a word.
*Qs.14:4. And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allah sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Prophet Sulaiman Pbuh - Qs 27:16
And Sulaiman was Dawood's heir, and he said: O men! we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given all things; most surely this is manifest grace.
      5. Metallurgy
They were both given the technology to manipulate both iron and copper!
      Dhul Qarnayn -
      Qs 18:96
Bring me blocks of iron; until when he had filled up the space between the two mountain sides, he said: Blow, until when he had made it (as) fire, he said: Bring me molten copper which I may pour over it.
      Prophet Sulaiman pbuh -
      Qs 34:10, 11 & 12.
And certainly We gave to Dawood (Sulaiman’s father) excellence from Us: O mountains! sing praises with him, and the birds; and We made the iron pliant to him, Saying: Make ample (coats of mail), and assign a time to the making of coats of mail and do good; surely I am Seeing what you do. And (We made) the wind (subservient) to Sulaiman, which made a month's journey in the morning and a month's journey in the evening, and We made a fountain of molten copper to flow out for him, and of the jinn there were those who worked before him by the command of his Lord; and whoever turned aside from Our command from among them, We made him taste of the punishment of burning.
      6. And both refused to accept gifts.
      Dhul Qarnayn -
      Qs.18:95,
They said: O Dhul Qarnayn! surely Gog and Magog make mischief in the land. Shall we then pay you a tribute on condition that you should raise a barrier between us and them
Prophet Sulaiman Pbuh - Qs.27:36, So when he came to Sulaiman, he said: What! will you help me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. Nay, you are exultant because of your present.
      Allah knows best.
And May Allah guide us to his straight path.

The figure of Dhulqarnain in the Old Testament.
In the Arabic translation of the Old Testament, the word "Dhul Qarnayn" (Hebrew: Ba`al Haqqərānayim בעל הקרנים) appears once in the book of Daniel 8:20:
    أَمَّا الْكَبْشُ الَّذِي رَأَيْتَهُ ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ فَهُوَ مُلُوكُ مَادِي وَفَارِسَ
Translation: The ram you see, which has 2 horns, is the king of the media and persia.
which has 2 horns (hebrew) : Ba`al Haqqərānayim
Which has 2 horns (arabic) : Dhulqarnayn
Dhulqarnayn is Cyrus The Great the King of Medo Persia.
    Ezra 1:2
"Cyrus king of Persia said, 'All the kingdoms of the earth have been given to me by the LORD God of heaven. He has commissioned me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah."
    Daniel 8:4
And I saw the ram going to the WEST, and to the NORTH, and to the SOUTH: and no beast could stand against him, neither could any deliver out of his power: he did as he pleased, and magnified himself.
    Al kahf 18:83-102
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."
Indeed We established him upon the earth, and We gave him to everything a way.
    So he followed a way
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people. Allah said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."
He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment.
But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of Paradise, and we will speak to him from our command with ease."
    Then he followed a way
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.
Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.
    Then he followed a way
Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.
They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?"
He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength; I will make between you and them a dam.
Bring me sheets of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."
So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.
[Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true."
And We will leave them(gog magog, jews, and disbeliever) that day surging over each other, and [then] the Horn will be blown, and We will assemble them in [one] assembly.
And We will present Hell that Day to the Disbelievers, on display -
Those whose eyes had been within a cover from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear.
Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.
Daniel 8:4 is connected with Al kahf 18:83-102
West: Cyrus Reign over Lydia (King of West) and come to Black Sea when sun setting and he see the sun going low and gone under Black Sea.
    "So he followed a way
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people.
North: Cyrus encounter Gog Magog (King of North) in Caucasus Georgia
    "Then he followed a way
Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.
South: Cyrus go to Indus India Pakistan Rajasthan
The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, in Darius time he open the land of indus.
    "Then he followed a way
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.
Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge."

Dhul Qarnayn was Prophet Sulaiman alaihi salam.
      Read the dalil below.
tafsir al-Quran bi-l-Quran (explaining the Quran through the Quran),
Similarities between Dhul Qarnayn and Prophet Sulaiman alaihi salam.
Here is the list of similarities between the two characters.
      This verse has the same meaning as in surah Yunus in which Allah Subhanallah ta’ala mentioned as;

What so surprising about a prophet with two names (attributes)? The name Sulaiman means (man of peace) he is also known as Yedidyah, Kohelet, and several other names in the bible.

6 ways to earn deeds after death:
    1) Give a copy of the Qur'an to someone. Each time one reads from it you gain.
    2) Donate a wheelchair to a hospital. Each time a sick person uses it you gain.
    3) Participate in building a masjid.
    4) Place a watercooler in a public space.
    5) Plant a tree. You gain whenever a person or an animal sits in it's shade or eats from it.

      This verse has the same meaning as in surah Yunus in which Allah Subhanallah ta’ala mentioned as;

3 ways to express Shukr (Gratitude):
The classical Muslim scholars have indicated Shukr(Gratitude) can be shown in three ways:
1- Shukr of the heart (Qalb), which is achieved by harboring and intending good for all of Allah's creation.
2- Shukr of the tongue (Lisan), which involves celebrating the praises of Allah, such as utterance of Alhamdulillah, and expressing gratefulness to Allah with our tongue.
3- Shukr of the limbs (Jawarih), which is fulfilled by using our external senses to do good. Every time Allah gives us a blessing, we must use it in a way that benefits humanity and that pleases Allah.

Actually based on what historians know now, they say that Darius was a usurper. After Cyrus died his empire was inherited by his son Cambyses and Cambyses had also another brother called Bardiya. Some modern historians suspect that Cambyses was assassinated, either by Darius as the first step to usurping the empire for himself. Bardiya also didn’t succeed the throne but rather Darius took over. Darius ascended the throne by overthrowing the Achaemenid monarch Bardiya, whom he claimed was in fact an imposter named Gaumata. Gautama was a Magi or Zoroastrian priest.
This perhaps explain why historians speculated on the religion of Cyrus because there was no mention of Cyrus in the Zoroastrian literature. The first mention of an Achaemenid king was Darius. This is the current view of some modern historian on what happened.

      They worship Ahura Mazda

      Ahura Mazda created everything
      He created good and bad
      He is alone
      He is almighty
He is the creator of everything
Simply He is Almighty God (Allah)
I think Zoroastrians pray 2 times a day
And their priests pray 5 times a day
      Zoroaster pbuh had a book
But It disappeared over time and later a new book was written from what left in people's minds and zoroastrians call it the holy book and it isn't preserved like holy Quran and it has lots if errors
Also there are hadiths about it
Once mushriks asked prophet Muhammad pbuh why doesn't he let them worship their gods
He said I only let people of book to do that
They said but you let zoroastrians to worship their god
He said zoroaster was a prophet and he had a book
They killed him and burned his book
(I translated this hadith form persian and because I don't know how to translate some words I summarized it)
Zoroastrians Don't worship fire but they think it's a precious gift from Allah

One of the signs of Dhul-Nurain is the rising of the sun in the west. In fact, we call the west of Iran Khorasan (the land where the sun rises), and in Persepolis there are statues of lions with wings and goat horns or the image of Cyrus on coins with horn helmet. Also, Cyrus was the unifier of nations and his land extended from east to west. Also, he wrote the first inscription of human rights, and he is well remembered in Judaism and Christianity. Therefore, Cyrus was not a Zoroastria.Worshiping fire in Zoroastrianism means worshiping God. Fire for Zoroastrians is like the Kaaba for Muslims.

May read ancient history of the world. Persian King Darius seems had the characteristics. But I believe in current World Dzulkurnain relates to global scale and Dzulkurnain represent the person called Imam Mahadi to be appeared in the end time soon.

Dzulqarnain was Cyrus the Great. Dzulqarnain means two horns which are the two empires of Media and Lydia that Cyrus conquered and united them to form the Archaemenid empire. The travels of Cyrus also coincides with that of Dzulqarnain in the Quran. First, he conquered Lydia in the west and bordering the dark waters of the Black Sea, then he went to the Gedrosian desert where the people there lived a primitive nomadic lifestyle under the hot and extreme Gedrosian desert.

Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it going down into a black sea, and found by it a people. We said: O Zulqarnain! either give them a chastisement or do them a benefit.

    Until when he reached the land of the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people to whom We had given no shelter from It;

    ‎حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ السَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوْمًا لَّا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا
Until when he reached (a place) between the two mountains, he found on that side of them a people who could hardly understand a word.
Many believe that the wall mentioned in the Quran is the the Gates of Elan built at the Darial Gorge which is at the foot of Mount Kazbek and Mount Shani along the river Terek at the border of Georgia and Russia.
Cyrus was also revered by the Jews and he was prophesied to come by the prophet Jeremiah and Isaiah 200 years before he was born. During his reign as the king of the Archaemenid empire he conquered Babylon and released the many Jews who were exiled there after Nebuchednezar destroyed the first temple. He also funded the building of the second temple of Jerusalem after he conquered Babylon. Such was the honour bestowed on him that he is called the messiah in the Old Testament, the only gentile to have this honour.
Further testament to Cyrus being Dzulqarnain of the Quran is the fact that Dzulqarnain ( ذا القرنين ) is mentioned by name in the Arabic bible that is in the book of Daniel chapter 8:20 which reads
‎20 اما الكبش الذي رأيته ذا القرنين فهو ملوك مادي وفارس.
The ram which you saw, having the two horns-they are the kings of Media and Persia.
This is the only time that Dzulqarnain is mentioned in the bible in the same manner as the Quran and it clearly refers to Cyrus the great. The historicity or sirah of the story of Dzulqarnain also points towards Cyrus the Great as the questions posed to Prophet Muhammad by the Arab Jews of Medinah through the Mecca Quraish clearly relates to someone that they, the Arab Jews knew from their scripture as Dzulqarnain would be only seen in their Arabic bible and not even in the Hebrew bible.
Another interesting fact about Cyrus is the fact that he lived at the same time as prophet Danial and it would not be unfathomable to theorise that Cyrus was being advised by prophet Danial and also follows his teachings in terms of religious belief. Hence Cyrus maybe worshiping the One true God Allah as alluded in the Quran.
For these reasons, I believe makes Cyrus the Great the most likely candidate for Dzulqarnain in the Quran

This is the current view of modern historian on what happened.
