Look up how to put a person in the recovery position. Im a paraplegic, that's how my carers have always turned me, on their own. Its also a much safer, faster way to do it. You can ignore the whole head tilting, arm placements etc. Just watch the leg and hips being turned, so fast and easy. THIS VIDEO IS DANGEROUS FROM THE FIRST STEP. NEVER EVER DROP BOTH RAILS AT THE SAME TIME, i couldn't believe I heard a trainer say that. The risk of a paralysed person over rolling straight to the floor is at least 20% especially if they've started in the middle as he describes. AS THE RSIL, DESIGNED TK STOP THE PERSON ROLLING OUT, HAS BEEN DROPPED ON THE FAR SIDE OMG. THE RAIL THAT IS ON THE SIDE YOUR PUSHING THE PATIENT TOWARDS !!!! UNLESS YOU HAVE A SECOND PERSON OVER THERE. there are heaps of really brief but excellent clips. TYPE.....How to put someone in the recovery position. Overall its far better handling too and far less chance of them uncontrollably rolling onto their back again, AND no risk of the knees, ankles etc putting pressure on each other. As the leg position stops it.
I have had my husband in and out of the hospital on home health on hospice not one person or therapist or a nurse could show me what he just showed me thank you so much My husband will be much better off now that you show this video God bless you
The bed should be raised to the carer's hip height to reduce strain on the carer.

When you drop the rail on the far side, you have increased the danger of the patient rolling over the far edge of the bed, unless there is another person standing on the other side . Especially when you pull the sheet towards you. This dangerous rolling over point has been drastically overlooked by you.

Teaching the wrong way of changing position. Do not watch this video teaching changing position. I am a caregiver from Taiwan working and this is not the way we do it. Always put the rail on other side up when changing position
Why put rail down When pushing away from you? Thats risky.. its safer if you turn patient toward you

When my mom was heading towards actively dying and unable to move herself, this is still the way we moved her and changed sheets when needed. We would put the pillows on her side towards whoever was working on her, then sometimes get on the other side to pull her shoulder towards the other way when nobody else to help. It's much easier with another caregiver but not always possible.
I’m not sure how old this video is, but you would always lift the bed to about your hip level (maybe even a little higher) when repositioning and you never lower rails when rolling a patient on their side! They might roll of the dang bed! I also always leave the pillows in place. Make sure to lower the patients bed to lowest position with wheels locked and their call bell in their reach when you are done. Don’t forget bottom foot rails need to be lowered as well, or it can be considered a restraint. Good luck!

True,but not everyone has a hospital bed that has rails and can be lowered and lifted.
This carer has 2 strikes against him before even starting, 1, bed too low and 2, he is too tall.
i think it is important to keep the railings locked on the other side of the bed,just to be safe that the patient/client will not fall☺️
Yes im a paraplegic and my carers NEVER EVER PUT THE RAIL ON THE OTHER SIDE DOWN. CRAP WOULD END UP ON MY HEAD !!!!

If only my mother was so accommodating. She has limited use of her legs, has severe dementia and is absolutely terrified throughout the entire process.
This is my situation, as well. She fights me every step of the way. I do not have a hospital bed at home, so no way to raise the bed. I currently do not have rails, either.
You need sliding sheet to avoid friction burn and also to save your back 🤗
It is better to use 'Telison positioning bed pad with handles', which will be more convenient to help patient on turning/sitting up/lifting. It could be ordered from US amazon.
The bed was not raised to as safe working level of the caregiver, you as the caregiver have to protect your back in order to properly care for the patient.

In my state it is illegal to push a patient away from you while repositioning. THINK about it. They could roll right off the bed, rails down, no safety at all! This video is teaching unsafe techniques.
Katherine Elisabeth Brown that's right. Manual handling training teaches you to first raise the bed to hip height otherwise you can damage your back leaning over. Only lower the rail on the side you are working on. The patient could slide and fall from the bed so the rail on the side the patient is facing should remain raised.
Definitely yes! You should not positioning patient away from caregiver or nurse it might fall.... Hmmm. Wrong demonstration. It should be towards the caregiver or nurse in repositioning the patient.

Tell us how to move/reposition a patient who is bedridden and does not move at all and cannot hold on to nothing because cannot move her hands at all. and ok on the video you just showed how to reposition patient on one side, but what you do to the other side? Maybe the same thing you did to that side but then do it to the other side as well after 2 hours?
Dont forget to let the other side of the bed rails to avoid the clients to roll down on the bed when you were doing those practice to move the patient., thank you for this video hope it will improve.
Stupid lesson. Before you turn the patient, make sure that the rails on the side is up or someone is on the other side of the bed to avoid fall

Most beds don't have rails though. & for 1 assist cares you don't need another person, they don't account for that.
Do the turning with a patient that really can’t help himself. My hubby makes himself stiff and it is very hard to turn him. How do you turn someone like this. He can’t roll by himself

The bed should have been lifted to the waist level before taking the rails down. For safety precautions, there should have been another person on the opposite side of the patient. The patient could have fallen off the other side both safety guards were down.

Red flag already on first step. Do not lower rails on both sides especially if you're going to turn using linens. Unless you want your patient to fall on the other side🤣👌
bed should be leveled to caregiver/nurse's hip at least to not hurt his back.
This video is very good except for the fact that as the patient was being turned the railing was not up and there was no other person on the opposite side
I would think twice about pushing on a frail, elderly patient. There are alternatives methods.

I’m just curious, why would you use someone who can visibly move on his own. As a nurse why not use an actual bed bound person?🤦♀️

It is called reclining position.
To turn a patient in bed, use the palms of the hands. Put one (1) hand on the hip and the other on the upper arm where the shoulder meets. Pull the patient towards you. Never push the patient. Don't grab the legs to lift them. Place the palms of the hands underneath. Yeah! why did you put both bars down? That is a definite NO, NO when you are alone. The bed is also way to low. It should be raised to just below the navel.

Wow really bad demonstration. Bed should be raised to your hip height. The opposite rail was down why? When the sheet was pulled its a miracle he didnt roll right off the bed! And most people that need help can't move themselves and are a dead weight. Some are big heavy men too. I've just injured my back badly after working a lone waking night, and a quadriplegic 20 stone man wanted a bead pan. I came here for advice on how to do it. Not helpful at all.
Pulling the linen like that can be dangerous
The bed needs to the same height as the carers hips to prevent back injury. Rule number one…

WARNING VERY Bad move. Take this first hand from a paraplegic that's hit the floor !!! and it's plain commonsense. As a paraplegic who needs carer turning, like myself every few hours, lowering the rail you are turning the person towards is deadly dangerous. Ie you say make sure they are on the middle of the bed !! Then Lower BOTH rails, YOU'RE rolling/pushing them over from the middle to their side. So starting from the middle they will now be getting rolled closer to the opposite side of the bed, where noone is standing and no rail up. Dropping that far rail is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, ITS THERE TO STOP YOU FALLING OUT OF BED., especially when being rolled. It's not like the person who cannot move their own hips or legs etc. can suddenly prevent going over the opposite side. That further rail should NEVER be dropped when rolling. Unless there is a second carer on the other side. It is safer and much easier, to simply roll them over using the recovery positioning technique ie just with the legs ( dont worry about all the airway stuff and arm placement as much) takes 30 .seconds and its impossible for the person to accidently go back over onto their back !!! The pillow isn't needed yo prevent them rolling back, dlthoygh it may provide comfort. Simple recovery roll technique is much faster for one person and It also means there is no chance of pressure with knee on knee etc. NEVER DROP THE FAR RAIL your tolling towards. I COULD NOT BELIEVE I HEARD THAT OMG if you must go around the other side fine, pull the rail up, walk around the other side and then drop it !!!
You are speaking from experience, I can tell. Nothing to teach you caution like being on the receiving end of personal care. N I say that because I have been for a short time after a major brain surgery. So, yes, this was NOT a safe turning procedure.

well, it's easy because the patient is awake but how about if he is in a coma? It would be very hard.
Normally if the person cant move just raise the the bed height, turn the patient with one knee is bending before u turn to right or left. Put ur one hand to leg that bends and the other hand is one the upper back.. you need 2 persons if he is big ..But always bend the knee when turnings.

I can’t understand why you would put both rails down some patients grab it to help/ pull themselves and in a coma like patient you need it for safety that was dangerous of you to do in my opinion even with an alert and with it patient

That bed level is at an extremely dangerous low level for the caregiver and patient.

You should tell 24 Hour Homecare that they need need to train their caregivers. Most of them don't know anything about bedbound patients.
This is very scary! My husband has no control of his body and would have rolled off the other side of the bed. He cannot move his head up and his hips back a this person did. He also would roll right back onto his back when you removed that other pillow. This should be a demonstration on how NOT to do it.

Do not move people like this. The bed rail should be up. The bed should be raised and a slide sheet with 2 carers. Also i noted he leant on the patients knees and hip. You should avoid leaning on the patient. How not to do it!!

Here in Las Vegas the people were supposed to be turning pt in their shifts JUST DONT DO IT and if a family member points it out the staff shows their attitude and tell that they did it. What a bunch of lazy and careless people who should be FIRED!
This is an unsafe method, and not to mention how that method created wrinkled up bottoms sheets and it looked as if they got pulled off the bed. Those wrinkles can impair skin integrity.

2. Security of the patients
3. Privacy of the patients
5. Safety of the patients

I am looking for videos for care of a family member by family members and this certainly will NOT be one of them. To lower the side rails (why?) and then push the patient AWAY from you is very dangerous. Also, you are going to hurt your back without raising the bed. Makes me wonder where you went to nursing school.

One rolls me but not like that!° the opposite rail is ALWAYS left up. My knee is bent up and thdn crossed over the other leg. Whist pushing against my hip to roll me. A wedge piillow is then put behind my back. But if the legs have been crossed ie top leg bent and crossed over straight underneath leg. Ita unlikely you will roll back. Itd just like doing the recovery position. Exact same movement of legs and hips. This guy is dangerous. Taking down both rails. Unbelievable

In reality, in hospitals and other facilities, the staff gets away from doing this important job of repositioning. Visit your loved ones frequently, as I do, and you will see how negligent the staff is. A firm supervisor should be watching what is going on on that floor constantly t; ensure the job is being DONE!
Where did this nurse get his training??? Definitely not from a certified State program??? This is awful, he turn him without the rail being up, he pulled the bed linen to center the patient, really!!! 24 Hour Home Care this is awful, please get a certified state training nurse!

@@fallback8314 Hi, this is two videos of the correct way to center a person. Ask the person to move closer to you if they are able or you must move their body in 3 segments as seen the 2nd video. In the 1st video the nurse went to the opposite side and forgot the raise the rail before she went to the opposite. If the bed doesn't have rails, then this doesn't apply. I hope this help!
