Follow up question to yours: How is it possible for a _perfect creator_ to create anything that is imperfect? A perfect creator is required to create perfect creations, this isn't conjecture, by definition it must be true. The example that comes to mind is light bulbs which are currently manufactured to fail, so a modern manufacturer of light bulbs, like GE, would be _efficient_ or _intentional_ manufacturers of imperfect light bulbs, but they are not perfect manufacturers since perfectly manufactured light bulbs would need to last as long as light bulbs could possibly last.

In a recent news story/tragedy, a 15-year old boy murdered everyone in his family. Except his younger sister, who survived his two gunshots. Reporting on the story, a 'newsman' said she survived "by the grace of God." And after i finished trembling at the abject stupidity, i really wanted to ask him: So... your God was napping as the kid shot and killed his mother, father, and brother, and then your God awakened just in time to save the little girl? But, was still tardy and allowed her to be shot in the hand and *neck.* That's what happened? And in this "grace," she still has to testify against him as the only surviving witness, and then live the rest of her life with this trauma. She's 11. So, yeah, if there ever was a God, it decided to tell some very primitive people what 'he' was all about, people in a very narrow period of history, in a very narrow strip of the planet. And to no one else. So, if there ever was a God, maybe that was its dying act, and God is dead? No, i don't believe that, but if you do believe there was a Creator, it's hard to imagine believing it still exists and acts upon this world. Then again, i'm miserable, so you nevah, nevah know.
That happened very recently, and when I read the comments on Yahoo and UA-cam, I noticed a lot of people were blaming this event on a "lack of god", and argued we need to "put god back in school". Those were strange arguments because that was a home-schooled family, and I bet the kid who murdered his family got plenty of God at home with his "schooling". Can't blame public school for this, but the bible thumpers never miss an opportunity to reinforce a false narrative.

20:15 this last point isn't true. 50% of all solar systems contain a habitable world. Furthermore, the laws of the universe are so precisely fine-tuned that even the slightest variation in fundamental constants, such as gravity or the electromagnetic force, would disrupt the delicate balance necessary for the formation of stars, planets, and ultimately, the emergence of life. But how does this explain natural disasters? Platonism gives a good answer: it is due to the limitations of matter: The rays of the sun, because they are far away from the sun, they take on a nature contrary to the sun - they become cold and dark. In the same way, matter, because it is so far from the Source, it takes on a nature contrary to the Source - it becomes unreal and chaotic. It is due to the limitations of matter, rather then the absence of God. And why is God silent? Platonism again gives a good answer: it isn't a man who gets angry, speaks through prophets, demands worship, etc, as Christians Muslims and Jews claim. It is just Infinite substance, infinite Mind. It won't speak to us personally for the same reason it can't speak to prophets: it isn't a man. It is infinite, dimensionless substance and Mind.
Christians would say ''God does intervene, but he gave us free will, and the price that comes with this, is there will be evil in the world'' however the rebuttal to this, is ''Is there free will in Heavan? They didn't go away, so I asked my minister about it, and he told me I wasn't praying hard enough, so I prayed harder. Yet my parents still argued and fought and were at each other's throats and eventually divorced. Well, if God can't make time to help me salvage my parent's marriage, to hell with God!
I’m not atheist nor Christian for that matter (even tho i once was) the “silence of God” amongst other equally important questions, has never adequately been addressed and never answered by Christians. In its place so many things, mostly insignificant things, are attributed to God it’s as if Christians need to defend or even prefabricate God’s involvement without ever being able to offer credible evidence. I left Christianity for different reasons mostly because I found the world outside the Church so much bigger so much more appealing in which it’s currency was honesty and one that encouraged questions that never came with any absolutes.
There is a personality component concerning a person's need for living a world that needs an enforcer of order versus one that can understand and deal with complexity and processes.
You've just strengthened my faith. Thank you so much. I have listened to many atheists talk but you have a different perspective. Keep up the good work. Oh, and when I said you've strengthened my faith, I meant my faith in not believing in god.
Faith is the belief in something without evidence. All the evidence points towards atheism. Please reconsider calling it faith. Theists want to think we have faith. Atheism is the absence of faith.
The most morally egregious aspect of God is the lack of uniformity in messaging. It's true that absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence, but the omission of God's accountability toward a species begotten in sin makes the Christian/Jewish God either internally impossible or flawed.
If gawd really cared and wanted us to believe in him, why would he use fallible humans, with weak excuses and even weaker or nonexistent evidence to convey his super important message? A perfect and omniscient being would, could, and should have had a better plan.
The god claim is like the flat earth argument - it's so completely ridiculous and without a shred of evidence to support it, it can be dismissed as the incoherent ramblings of a fool. The suggestion that the idea should be remotely entertained let alone respected is absurd.

I believe, without too much evidence, that the propensity toward religion was woven in humanities genes early on, and we are evolving out of it. That is why some people are more easily swayed toward it and others not.
Woven into our genes, I don’t think I would go that far. I would folks were just born into their belief system for the most part, and just accepted it. When the Jewish/Abrahamic religions came along, people were forced into accepting the belief system.
I agree with darkeyeze. It's not in our genes. An organism that is afraid of what's not there is more likely to survive when a true danger exists. It leads to reproducing more and teaching more of the population to fear what is not there. We are just reaching a stage when we are realizing that these imaginary threats are not real and teaching more of the population not to fear the imaginary.

On earth we have made the choice to not concern ourselves with the things that God has deemed important. While on the earth we have decided that we do not want to be with God nor become like God. So what is God supposed to do? We have decided not to be with him. Should God make us be with him? We are returning to our answer concerning free will. God will not force us to be with him. God will not force us to have a relationship with him. Therefore, God will not make us be heaven. God will not make us live with him. What is God to do but to send our souls to a place where God is not: hell.
The Flavian Theory, to be accepted, needs to find documents from historians that report the imperial act of the Flavians ordering the scribes to write the gospels; or archaeological findings that corroborate the thesis... without a historical or archaeological record it will not be possible to accept the thesis of a "Roman Jesus"...
I think suffering is part of the human experience and there is absolutely nothing that can be done to fully fix that. God's existence isn't so much literally important as is the prayers and meaning that a belief in God will give you. A man can have everything in the world and still feel like it's all meaningless, there is a "God" sized hole in all of our psyches that only God could fill. Even if he was merely an invention, he is perhaps the most important invention for our mental sanity.

My strongest reason for atheism and criticism of religion is not all the crazy and sick things I read in their holy books, but when religious people try to explain to me what they really mean and are about. These are always my strongest reasons for atheism. These so-called explanations are usually embarrassing and absurd due to how cruel and irrational the texts are. The so-called "sophisticated" religious with their "metaphors, it depends on how you interpret it, you can't take it out of context" are absolutely the worst.

@@ancientfoglet9600 Religion has a lot to offer. For example, the Apostle Paul preached, Flee fornication. What happens to the person who takes this counsel to heart and flees fornication? Well, one obvious result is that the person does not produce any unwanted children. Atheists have a serious problem of unwanted children, which they try to resolve through killing the unwanted children by abortion. Now you can say this is meaningless preaching, but I have not killed any children or paid someone else to kill children. That gives me an advantage if an atheist somewhere wants to try to tell me something. I can see that atheists do not have any ideas that I want to embrace. So I can say that your meaningless preaching of atheist dogma offers me nothing.
There are quite a few errors in the captioning. Some of them quite funny. One good example: Carrier says "God is inert" and the caption reads "God is a nerd"
You are already said. GOD IS SILENT. And that is problem which means God doesn't need you, that's why he is silent. The letter is clear, God is loud only if his interests are at stake and who he needs. Whether there is God or not is really insignificant what IS significant is that he is silent. Which again means when you are in trouble He will not save you because he does NOT need you.
I guess you'll have to take on the theists that believe God has unconditional love for us, want this personal relationship with him and doesn't want anyone to end up in hell. We are fine without gods. We don't believe they exist in the first place. It's theists who believe otherwise, though...
If a god is eternal why does god have so many human qualities that we use for survival and getting along with other humans? Why does god have so many attributes needed for surviving in our world?
Every religious person cast doubt upon the existence of each others gods. They are all practicing atheist getting closer to the number 0 as time moves.
I've always wondered why God revealed himself to ignorant, unsophisticated credulous Iron Age people then stopped revealing himself once mankind developed science, philosophy and became more sophisticated. Odd that. Surely God could shut down all debate about his existence by revealing himself to a few famous scientists? But he can't or won't. Odd that.
This world is just as God/the Bible predicted it would be: full of good and evil, A God who is mostly silent as he leaves us free to try and be our own gods like we wanted; a mostly inactive God who says that one day he will return, take Godship back away from humans and Satan, and finally rule directly himself.
That's not a prediction, dear. That's an observation. Another observation is that when a society drops their religious beliefs they get more civilized and human rights flourish. Yet another observation is that mankind was here on this world long before they invented all of the gods.
I am capable of thinking of a better way to organise the world but have no power to enforce it, but an all powerful entity does nothing to improve things, but could. Doesn't that make me morally superior to it?
I'm capable of giving a trophy to everyone who says they want to be a football player. They don't have to play the game. Nobody gets hurt, nobody has to train, nobody has to pay for stadium tickets. Aren't I a far better person than literally everyone who has ever been involved in football?

We will never know God’s reasons or how God operates, we can’t say he is inert, or silent or anything about God, maybe God exists on multiple plane/s of existence where reality works completely differently, awful things that happen here may be erased and made to never happen, who knows. Our brains just cannot comprehend the enormity of the divine. Lack of physical evidence doesn’t mean God doesn’t exist. Personally, I prefer Spinoza’s interpretation of God.
@@neil10365 Lack of physical evidence of Gronk the star munching hedgehog doesn't mean lack of its existence either. But it certainly makes its non existence the rational conclusion to lean towards.
While I agree with Carrier's message and general reasoning, I do object to his use of the term "atheism", as in "atheism predicts." This is illogical, if one goes by the definition that atheism is the lack of belief in a diety or divinity. Atheism is not a single world view, not a philosophy, not a moral position, not an economic policy, not a political position, not a secular religion, and not a science. Its only position is disbelief in divinity. So, I get what Carrier says, but he misrepresents atheism, or at least, the term. His discourse would have more value, overall, if he found a reasonable substitute for the term. I believe that using the term "atheist" his way strengthens religious proponents that claim atheism is, in fact, some kind of formal secular religion, organized philosophy, or satanic conspiracy. I don't know what the answer is, but we need one. Even an awkward phrase such as "a non-religious analysis predicts" would be better.

Why would a loving god make a finite, spherical planet that is so small that overpopulation becomes a problem? Why does 99 percent of our solar system kill us instantly? Why are we not able to go to other solarsystems with suitable planets? That doesn't sound like something a loving creator would do.

Why do people keep judging God as if this world were the kind of world that he ultimately wanted?
If god didn't want it; why do it?
Are you suggesting god isn't all knowing or powerful?
How is it that you know what god wants?
I’ve said it once before and I will say 1 million times more, RELIGION ISN’T FOR EVERYONE
It shouldn't be for anyone. It's just a legalised money-making scam.
Yes, religion is here to stay as we have so many social tribal instincts making us who we are.
@@Chris-hx3om Is atheism any less profitable? The people writing books arguing that there is no creator are not doing it for free...
All the reasons given for not being a Christian or a believer of any other religion excluded the 2 main reasons, place of birth and indoctrination by parents from birth
The everlasting despair of humankind is presented above in a nutshell. "We are just microscopic specks in a hostile universe and no one is there to help us. Oh, woe is me." Open your mind.
"... he got e coli poisoning and was dead within two hours."
I can't find any instance of anyone dying of e coli induced hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) within two hours. That's not how HUS affects humans, even children. Death can take weeks.
"HUS usually develops one to two weeks after initial symptoms of E. coli infection (or infection with other bacteria that release similar toxins) appear."
Mortality rate for HUS is not high. Richard doesn't say where he got his information.
Why would a loving god make a finite, spherical planet that is so small that overpopulation becomes a problem? Why does 99 percent of our solar system kill us instantly? Why are we not able to go to other solarsystems with suitable planets?
That doesn't sound like something a loving creator would do. A loving creator would make it easy to find new, uninhabited land, so that conflict and the destruction of other lifeforms can be avoided. Living on an infinate, habitable plane would create a lot less problems.
Especially when Genesis gives a flat Earth view, and is totally wrong on what was created when.
I dont know who or what created life and neither does anyone else 😊
The FS Monster dunnit!
Life wasn't created. It came into being through natural processes.
@josephbelisle5792 thats great, please explain the evidence in a sentence or two 🙏
@@Starchaser63 Well, the first life appeared at least 700 million years after the formation of the Earth and evolved over billions of years after that. If you want to posit a god started life off, good luck trying to show that.

Francisco Ayala, a renowned evolutionary biologist and recipient of the National Medal of Science and the 2010 Templeton Prize *(and a former Dominican priest),* recently stated the consensus of the field in these terms [Ayala2010, pg. 49-50]:
*The overwhelming majority of biologists accept evolution. Those who know professionally the evidence for evolution* ***cannot deny it.*** *Scientists agree that the evolutionary origin of animals and plants is a scientific conclusion* ***beyond reasonable doubt.*** *The evidence is compelling and all-encompassing because it comes from all biological disciplines including those that did not exist in Darwin's time.* In the second half of the nineteenth century, Darwin and other biologists obtained convincing evidence from a variety of disciplines, which had reached early maturity during the nineteenth century: *anatomy, embryology, biogeography, geology, and paleontology. Since Darwin's time, the evidence for evolution* ***has become much stronger and more comprehensive,*** coming not only from traditional sources but also from recent disciplines such as *genetics, biochemistry, ecology, ethology, neurobiology, and molecular biology.*
... ***Because the evidence is so overwhelming,*** ... evidence for evolution no longer engages the interest of biologists except when explaining evolution to the public or arguing with those who refuse to accept evolution. Although not sought and ***no longer needed,*** the evidence for the fact of evolution continues to accumulate.

"As someone who's had the privilege of leading the human genome project, I've had the opportunity to study our own DNA instruction book at a level of detail that was never really possible before. It's also now been possible to compare our DNA with that of many other species. ***The evidence supporting the idea that all living things are descended from a common ancestor is truly overwhelming.*** *I would not necessarily wish that to be so, as a Bible-believing Christian. But it is so. It does not serve faith well to try to deny that."*
***"Yes, evolution by descent from a common ancestor is clearly true.*** If there was any lingering doubt about the evidence from the fossil record, the study of DNA provides the strongest possible proof of our relatedness to all other living things."

@@Starchaser63 People create things for our needs out of existing material. We have never encountered a mind without a brain or a mind that could think/will matter into existence from nothing. The concept of there being a great creator is not based upon anything in reality.

All one needs to reject Christianity is John 3:16. It embodies the moral turpitude and violence inherent in that Bacchic mystery cult.

Do u pronounce Carrier the French Canadian way? (Carriay)
Well……there is only one way to truly know if there is a God………and no way pf comin’ back to tell anyone even if there is one.
Isn’t the idea of a God who can do anything (logically possible/noncontradictory) a simpler idea than the complexity of the universe? Humans don’t even fully understand all the complexities of a single human cell yet.
For the last time god is silent because there is no such entity.
What are your thoughts on the Bible?
what if god doesn't speak your language, or is mute ???
