I bought one this week from amazon. I'm an authorized technician who repairs tv's and amplifiers for 28 years, and I can't tell you that I'm quite surprised at how this multimeter is accurate! I can't wait to try it more next week at work! I made some co-workers jealous on Friday when I received it! Some of them order one right after I showed it to them, especially for the price it is!
A couple neat features not mentioned: 1) The display reads "LEAD" if you manually select current function and have the leads in the wrong holes. 2) The display reads "FUSE" if the internal fuse is blown for the current range you selected. (There are two.) 3) There's also an icon on screen for a blown fuse. I'm sure there are other conveniences I missed.

After three weeks the KM601 is perfect. I needed a replacement set of "leads," and the Kaiweet's support team is second to one ...they sent me what I needed and more. I received a better response from the support team than you do on a new car, or new appliances at Lowes, or just about anything I've purchased in the past ten years that required contact with customer support.

Great product review Bruce. Look forward to seeing more reviews like this. One of my biggest gripes with these cheap budget multimeters is the bargraph. Most budget Multimeters seem to sync the bargraph update frequency with the numeric value, usually 2 times per second. Higher end meters update the bargraph as high as 25 to 50 times per second. This allows you to see any flutter in the reading than can't be displayed by the slow averaged update of the numeric value.
Those Radio Shack meters are legendary. I used to work at a Radio Shack back in the 80s and we sold tons of those. I've got a few kicking around in my garage and they're antique collectors' items now but I recently took them out and tested them and they still work great.
Good review. About the stand... this meter is intended to be used lying flat. Probably because the leads enter the bottom of the case. The screen viewing angle is optimised for viewing obliquely i.e. from "below". So, no, you don't want a stand it is just different to what you are used to.
How practical is the KM601 in use? Sure it's got the big fancy screen but in use do you find it ergonomic. The color screen is nice but I find that temp reading annoying and the power button on top and probe inputs on bottom sides a little awkward in use. Do you find the same?
The only things that I can see is that when testing capacitance it would be nice if it would display a "thinking" indicator so you could be certain that there is a connection and an up down function selector would have been nice. I think the temp and light will get some use too. Size is great. Other than that maybe a stand, but a lot of stands are garbage anyway. Seems really handy though. Thanks for the review, just what I was looking for.
1 thing you forgot to test, set both meter to resistance, capacitance or diode mode and plug the probes straight into mains, normally nothing should happen to the meters at all
21:11 I recommend using alligator clips which I think is provided in the package for testing diodes and capacitors rather than using those needle probes to have more accurate and fast readings
Yes the Flukes are another level and Dave at EEV did some explaining why they are so expensive. But this one looks nice and seems to be good. If anything to remark it is the missing stand indeed, maybe they will popup at the 3Dprint sites. Another thing I would see is the screen that needs protection if it is laying around, I would certainly get somthing for that. Nice and complete review and testing. Thanks!
Have to say, my fluke 177 doesn't eat 9v batteries. I'm amazed how long they last in it compared to other meters ove had in the past. I like the probe led indicators, I've forgot to change them in the past and blown some expensive fuses lol

@@mdzacharias ok, important information. Zoom microphones the same, they drain battery in no time. Can i ask you if this device has also a "true" on/ off? Like a curiosity the drain current when on?
@@electrocat9 Well now you got me interested. I had forgot how much current drain in operation so I checked. At power up it peaks at about 41mA, then settles to about 30 mA in normal operation. This probably explains why they sent an extra set of batteries with some versions of this meter.
@@mdzacharias That extra battery pack explains so well now, instead ask for a refund just replace the battery and then forget :) When On, mine settles to ~700uA at 9V so it seems about 20 times less consumption. This should be the specification to begin with... and this device needs an external power supply.
Had a Fluke for years but that was a while back and I wanted a new, more capable meter than the cheap DIY store one I bought mainly for DC and continuity. The Kaiweets comes tomorrow, I’ve seen a few people use it and it seems like a good deal. My biggest issue is the missing kickstand, I’m sure I will find a stand of some sort for it.
Well, when I get more funds I think you’ve sold me on one of these. I’m still using the more upmarket Cen-Tech meter that Hazard Fraught sells and it’s been okay, but definitely could do way better.
Those Centech meters work fine and sometimes they give em away for free as a bonus. It does everything you need and is small and portable. You can't beat the value.

Thanks. if you happen to skip a particular range you want, do you need to cycle through all again to come back to the one you need? or Can the Range selection be done in reverse, like fwd/back or up/dn? Also it seems the probe insertion/changing needs both our hands. I'm fascinated by the large screen and features, and may plan to buy one.
Great review. I was thinking of buying this model as that big color screen looks amazing. I can't understand how Fluke can sell their meters for so much when the competition puts out such great models for half the price. That being said as nice as this Kaiweets is I have to wonder how practical that huge screen is and the push buttons take a little getting used to. The new design looks nice but not sure how practical it is in use.
It's because the properly rated HBC fuses and other certified safety components used in Fluke meters are expensive and there's no price on safety. When you see what happens to in instrument that doesn't survive what it's allegedly meant to, you understand the importance of buying a decent product.
I would really be sold on this product if you had picked up/purchase one off the shelf. I just don't trust anything manufacturer sent to review. They are know to send special tweeted ones which give good result in reviewers test and not the same off the shelf

Unfortunately and as is often the case, most of these types of reviews concentrate on supposedly how accurate the meter is and how many bells and whistles its got. What you should be concerned with is the inherent safety of the device, i.e. how well it will protect you when you accidentally connect it across the mains with it on the current or resistance range. A good meter will effectively just stop working because the fuse has blown but most of these cheaper ones will not survive and likely cause injury to the user. The ommision of proper certified and tested HBC fuses, proper layouts observing creepage and clearances to meet the declared category etc are not met cheaply or easily. That's why Fluke and the like are so expensive, because you can't put a price on your safety!

So that makes the compliance of the meter even more important, otherwise the ignorant user will be lulled into a false sense of security because even if say a simple meter has glass LBC or insufficiently rated fuses in it, or poor layout, creepage/clearances etc and the operator uses it on mains-powered equipment, they are at risk. How did you learn about Category ratings and the meaning and importance? Probably through good training like me, but how many "hobbyists" have a clue what the ratings mean? Probably very few. I would wager that quite a high proportion of the "reviewers" on UA-cam haven't got any idea of the real meaning of Installation/Measurement categories and how to determine if a product meets those requirements.

Not sure if you're in the UK or not but we regularly see reports in the media about fires and other problems caused by non-compliant/fake electrical goods such as phone chargers etc. and despite the regulations, these unsafe products are on-sale everywhere.

I bought 4 Ni-MH rechargable 9V batteries from EBL for my old UT51 (just in case I need them for something else too). If wikipedia is correct, mine have about 60% of the capacity of an alkaline battery. I was wondering if I should buy a new multimeter like the UT61D/UT161D (or the BM786 eevblog edition) because of autoranging and AAA batteries.
The rechargeable 9v batteries seem to be better suited to high drain tasks. In a multimeter, they don't last anywhere near as long as an alkaline. Having said that, the issues I was having with batteries going flat regularly relate to multimeters I don't even use anymore. The Fluke is still on its first battery.
@@BranchusCreations I got my fluke 23 secondhand from a diesel mechanic in 1991, until I got my 179 about 8 or so years ago I used it everyday at work, the 23 still gets used at one of my test benches at work and has had two sets of leads and only five batteries in its lifetime so far. The Fluke has had a hard life but was still accurate when calibration checked in 2020. Long live Fluke
When the meter is in Smart mode, by touching both leads gives continuity which is fine. But when I move or touch the RED lead alone (tip is not touching anything) gives random resistance values from 0L to 99 M Ohms. This behavior confuses me if there is something wrong with the meter. Checked with another lead, the same thing haapened. Is anybody getting this behavior?
The jumping readings is the meter cycling thru the different modes trying to figure out what you're trying to do... which is apparently nothing but waving leads around like Harry Potter.
i'm trying to find out if this multi-meter will accept the "Brymen_BL21S2_T4SC_Silicone_Test_Leads". a reviewer mentioned that the socket pitch 14mm instead of the standard 19mm or 3/4" to keep the width down. i have to admit i don't really understand that.. so i thouhgt i'd ask a couple of folks online that would have different brand test leads.

@@samdeur yeah in the US the meters all use pretty standard leads and I've ordered alot from China too and they all use the same leads. There are some very high voltage industrial meters that use thicker leads but that's not common unless you work in the hydro, nuclear or power industry. Not sure about EU as there's so many countries with different standards. But I think most of Western Europe and likely Netherlands too use the same meter probes. Yeah the probe masters are nice. 👍
I can't believe how some companies still convincing some people that replacing the traditional multimeter selector with this form of single soft button you have to press it for 1 to 8 times in a row is a good idea !! this is not suitable for handheld multimeters specially not for the cheap ones. at least put a dedicated buttons for voltage, ohm, current, capacity. the selector is far more handy and trustworthy. I am not sure about this particular multimeter but most of the multimeters with this kind of form can't handle low milli volt area, a proper soft switching of the modes requires expensive relays, parts,... like the bench multimeter. and I believe that everyone will find the auto mode is stupid and meaningless.

I have that same multi meter, and have found it to be a great value item. The probes are of good quality. Great display and feels solid.
The meter also has the often omitted REL function, for zeroing out the meters leads resistance while measuring milliamps or other unwanted variables

Isn't the delay with capacitors the price you pay for AAA vs 9V? 9V can pump up the caps much faster

My Fluke is good on batteries too, but such an expensive meter!
These have a standby power drain of about 9uA, and the continuity function is faster when manually selected.
My best multimeter has a drain of about 700uA/9V in standby. How can this with its huge and color display drain 9uA/4.5V? Are you sure it was on?

I think you have to cycle again. There is no back button. But it's slow in selecting so you shouldn't overshoot.

No it doesn't. For that you'll need either an ESR meter or an LCR meter.
Why can't these be chargeable with USB micro or USB-C? Maybe an internal battery or something that can be swapped out to use standard AAA batteries?

@@samdeur yeah in the US the meters all use pretty standard leads and I've ordered alot from China too and they all use the same leads. There are some very high voltage industrial meters that use thicker leads but that's not common unless you work in the hydro, nuclear or power industry. Not sure about EU as there's so many countries with different standards. But I think most of Western Europe and likely Netherlands too use the same meter probes. Yeah the probe masters are nice. 👍
I can't believe how some companies still convincing some people that replacing the traditional multimeter selector with this form of single soft button you have to press it for 1 to 8 times in a row is a good idea !!
this is not suitable for handheld multimeters specially not for the cheap ones. at least put a dedicated buttons for voltage, ohm, current, capacity. the selector is far more handy and trustworthy. I am not sure about this particular multimeter but most of the multimeters with this kind of form can't handle low milli volt area, a proper soft switching of the modes requires expensive relays, parts,... like the bench multimeter.
and I believe that everyone will find the auto mode is stupid and meaningless.
