    Seems pretty clear to me that MP is going to have to play ball with MM era material and make it the best he can. I'm sure no one has to pull his strings to pick MM era tunes for the setlist if they give him back that duty. Interesting to see how this all unfolds. I do detect some defensiveness on MP's part judging solely from this Q&A. hE SOUNDS TO ME LIKE HE REALLY WANTS IT TO BE EXACTLY LIKE THE OLD DAYS, AND THAT COULD BE A DEAL KILLER, HAVING HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF.

      They basically need to stop Petrucci from using this fat boring slick and texture less boomer guitar sound, and playing movie drama themes on the lead on each bridge of every effin song, prevent Rudess from playing his boring and overplayed orchestra stuff, prevent both of them playing the same variations of the same effin harmonies over and over again in all their songs, and preventing Labrie from singing to much in high pitch, and prevent Myung from talking too much as usual... ^^ and itd be all good.

    I'll admit, the circumstances were a bit odd and cryptic with Mr. Portnoys return. As much as I really don't care about the details of why Mr. Mangini was out and Portnoy was back...I kinda wanted some insight. Maybe because historically, readers always got something!
    That being said, on one hand, it seems like kind of a 💩 deal for Mr. Mangini, but on the other, I'm kind of pumped to see/hear Mr. Portnoy back in the mix. I won't be sold until I hear new material with him, but up until his departure, his position and contribution were a BIG part of what made me a fan of the band. Needless to say, despite his accollades and percussion prowess, I did not ride the Dream Theater train during the Mangini years.
    I do hope Portnoys contributions will bring back the sound that made me the fan I was. Again, (and similar to the hope I had when Rob Trujillo joined Metallica, that he'd bring a dynamic/sound that might have made them more appealing to me) I'm hoping to come back on board with Dream Theater.🤘🔥

    Mike Mangini was a phenomenal replacement while Portnoy was out and I very much enjoyed the DT records he was apart of and hope nothing but the best for Mangini's upcoming solo record Invisible Signs and will be purchasing the record day one. What I do NOT want Dream Theater to do is just redo the sounds of their past records please keep doing new stuff you can always replay the old stuff on tours but keep making new stuff that is different.

      @kennybenally7187 5 місяців тому

      Agreed. I'd love to see them continue with their new writing dynamic and see where Portnoy fits in all of it. I mean their last album was freakin' amazing along with the production. And they got a Grammy out of it too. I want Dream Theater to keep that same momentum going into their next album with Portnoy.

      @@kennybenally7187 Spot on. I have the same wish. A View from the Top of the World is just insane, in my opinion their very best record ever (close to my favorite old-school albums (Images and Words, Awake, Six degrees and Train of Thought). So good to see Portnoy back!

    • @Beefnhammer
      @Beefnhammer 5 місяців тому

      @@kennybenally7187 I agree that the new album shouldn't be an obvious attempt to recreate the "old sound", but what I do hope is that the new album has a bit more balls to it than the stuff they did with Mangini. One of the things I love about Portnoy-era DT is that there are so many songs that are very progressive overall, but also have sections in them that ease up on the complexity for a minute of two and embrace the metal aspect of their sound.

    I feel like such an uncultured philistine only finding out about this until tonight (tend to live under a rock and not read news these days). I'm so excited to say the least and I used to be a bit of a nerd with the old Dream Theater songs with my keyboardist mate, we'd jam up until the late of night with some of the old classic DT songs. Pull me Under is just such a timeless classic for me though even if Mike didn't quite like the sound of the drums that were produced and finished on that album. Still a hell of a song and what he did for DT was amazing after that album. Mike Mangini is also a hell of a technical wizard on talent and I'll be keeping an eye on his solo work.
    I think one of my favourite albums though would have to be Awake. And the songs on that album 6:00 and scarred are absolute bangers.. just never forget their rhythmic goodness etched in my mind lol.
    Welcome back though Mike Portnoy the legend himself!

      @@deepenwadhwa4027 Being completely honest here. I have absolutely zero clue how the new setlists are going to look like.
      We have two options that will happen for the next tour:
      1. Portnoy will play Mangini's era songs and will learn to play Mangini's parts or he will play them alternatively in his own style, making the songs sound different, perhaps even better or worse? This is actually what I am curious about and I wish I could hear his way of playing those songs.
      2. Next live setlist will completely ignore anything from Mangini's era and it'll be like watching them back in 2009 when BC&SL released plus the new album.
      I honestly have no clue which option I'd prefer here. Probably the first but we have to think that if Portnoy does play Mangini's era songs, he could very much change them and some people might not like that.

    The mixed reaction to his return from fans is honestly surprising. I know Mangini was eventually embraced and that he's lauded for his insane technical skill, but I always thought there was a consensus among most fans that the music they put out after Portnoy left was inferior. (Not bad, just not as good). And so I would have expected the reaction to this news to be near unanimously positive.

    • @Vestu
      @Vestu 5 місяців тому +1

      They were headed in that direction before Portnoy ever left, imo.

    • @Beefnhammer
      @Beefnhammer 5 місяців тому

      @@Vestu I mean, their sound definitely changed when Mangini joined, so that's valid. It went from a pretty even hybrid of prog and metal, to more pure prog. But it's not like they didn't do crazy complex stuff with Portnoy too. Scenes from a Memory is a prog masterpiece. I think the stuff they made without Portnoy had a tendency to be self-indulgent and aimless at times, especially with the longer songs. I've tried many times to appreciate songs like Illumination Theory, and View From the Top of the World, but I just can't enjoy them to the same level as something like Octavarium or Change of Seasons. I think that's why Distance Over Time is by far my favorite Mangini era album. It had the tightest and most focused songwriting, and it felt the closest to old DT.

    • @Beefnhammer
      @Beefnhammer 4 місяці тому

      @@zipauthorzipauthor7867 Perhaps 'mixed' isn't the right word, since it implies 50/50. A better way to put it is: I've seen more people voicing disapproval of MP's return than I expected, even though most people are on board, myself included. Even if you have mixed feelings about Mangini being essentially kicked out, the fact of the matter is: DT is a better band with Portnoy in it, and bringing him back will surely boost ticket and album sales.

    As a long time Dream Theater fan I'm torn about this situation. On the one hand I know Portnoy brought the more metal side out of the band which I think they've been lacking but, I love Mangini's playing and I think he's technically a far superior drummer. I also love how his drums sound and how they are mixed, especially the last couple records. I never liked the way Portnoy's drums were mixed and I know that's mainly because Portnoy had final say on everything. I just hope Petrucci doesn't relinquish all that control again.

    Dream Theatre? That's a step back! Portnoy is the greatest but can suddenly make the wrong decision. I hope that he will play for Neal Morse furthermore.

    I think as much as Mike tries to put n a front that he dosnt mind the mangini era stuff, I would think it's like getting back together with a ex wife after she divorced her new husband. Then asking if ur down to watch old sex tapes and anniversary videos of the exes relationship while u were separated lol. On top of that the band u created won a Grammy without you which probably stings a lil more the he would like to admit! I would guess the alien would be the one song they keep on the set list if any from MM era. I'd just correlate that with having to intermingle with the children the ex had with the new husband..ur gonna get along with some better than the others, and who knows maybe u really hit it off with one of them so u don't mind hanging out with the kid at all...I imagine the new songs without him are in a similar arena as "the other kids". The "grammy kid" is definitely the one that went to Harvard and became the golden child out of ALL the sibling from the wife's perspective including the kids she had with u soo..

      Brutal! But, dear God yes, I hate apologizing for the vocals when I show DT to newbies. I think James is too iconic at this point. It's sort of the band's fault that he struggles so much now. Why not write melodies that aren't complete vocal acrobatics??? If this were a normal band, the singer would have more influence in this arena.

    • @albertplaysguitar
      @albertplaysguitar 5 місяців тому

      @@wilmer4622agreed! I also think they need to revamp the song formulas... I don't want these long melodic choruses like on every song... preceeded by safe verses and followed by Instrumental crazyness and solos just to come back and hear James vibrato his little heart out to sustain those choruses. 😅

    As long as he isn't ruining songs with his "singing voice", I can swallow this. Even though Mangini is a way better drummer and all of the "new stuff" is better than Systematic Chaos or Dark clouds by miles..
