which led to that great bit the second or third time it happened in a special where Buford is like "You know things are getting serious when Phineas gets mad" or something
@@ssjrana7342 those special episodes break the usual formula so much, even Phineas goes outside of his usual norm. And that's why I love a lot of those special episodes, it's great to see characters we love deal with unusual situations and see how they react to them.
@@DLxxx basically if he had done this joke in episode one it wouldn't have hit as hard or maybe even at all cuz it takes you getting to know Phineas and all that and then he finally gets to a point where's hes so done with everyone's shit he breaks charecter and is like "Get the fuCK ON THE TRIKE"
Similarly, I think when he gets angry and it's NOT played for laughs, it actually adds a lot of emotional weight to a scene. It's like, when PHINEAS is mad about something, you KNOW things are getting serious. It seems to genuinely catch people off guard too, like I see people not thinking his outbursts in Across the Second Dimension or Mission Marvel makes sense, but to me they do because he's out of his element - this isn't just another thing he's building for the day, he's now forced to react to bigger things and he's not used to days being this stressful. There's a reason it's kinda become infamous that Phineas always snaps in each of the specials in some way, because those are always bigger stories that force things to go wrong for the characters (funnily, Last Day of Summer breaks this pattern, he doesn't yell at anyone or have any breakdown there, lol). Funnily, Phineas might actually be my favourite character in the series, because seeing that despite everything, when things start getting out of his control he actually shows a more vulnerable and even harsher side at times really fascinates me. Seeing characters out of their comfort zone is ALWAYS fun.
Wow, you just explained my thoughts perfectly! I LOVE seeing characters outside of their comfort zone too, and them in sort of drastic situations because oh boi, I love me some emotional drama and impact! Especially my favorite characters; I hope that makes sense 😅 And literally same here, Phineas is my favorite for most of the reasons you described, yes! He's such an adorable, optimistic and happy-go-lucky character and it's always so interesting seeing him actually break down once in a while, showing, like you said, despite everything, he's still human- he's still a young boy who has a breaking point, like everyone else! My favorite Phineas moments are definitely that scene in Summer Belongs to You (you know the one lol) and pretty much the entire 2nd Dimension movie from the moment he learns Perry is a secret agent, I have Phineas' entire speech memorized, I swear!! I only think he was a little bit too mean in Mission Marvel, that's my least favorite P&F special anyway so :p
It's one of my favourite moments because it shows even someone who seems as optimistic and happy-go-lucky as Phineas can still be pushed to the edge or get impatient just like the rest of us 😭
"That is not a cheap laugh, that is an expensive laugh." Literal perfect way to describe that. This is the reason why I love good writing so much, just the amount of time and effort that will go into small moments goes a long way for me.
I laughed at that line. Phineas, the kind and genial, yelled at his sister to get on a trike so they could continue the plot. It was so unexpected, and that's what made it great.
Truely awesome. Good characters always make a show great. It's this kind of detail and attention that I give special appreciation to in media. Dan Povenmire is a legend.
Even after forgetting this gag for years every single time I hear get on the trike the exact same voice despite not seeing the episode in a while I can hear in my head.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired! Just a few minutes before this, they were about to spend the longest day of summer on a deserted island with even Phineas throwing in the towel. This line felt like Phineas was on his second wind just feet away from the finish line and heavens to betsy I am not letting a tricycle be my downfall!
I’ve always loved this moment. Its just like you said, we got to know him as a pretty relaxed, calm, but energetic kid. And that movie slowly pushed him and his character. It showed how his hyper fixation keeps him from enjoyment of the amazing things he does some times. And then this “snap” kinda brings it all together in a funny way
This is my favorite gag too. Great moment of depth for Phineas, and there was a huge sense of catharsis in seeing him finally throw it back at Candace.
As a kid, this show was not only my favorite show, not only was Summer Belongs to You my favorite episode, but the trike line was my absolute favorite line in the entire four seasons of the show. My sister- who is 15 years older than me- and I used to watch this show ALL the time, and every laugh we had was genuine. This line had us cackling and crying laughing when we first saw it. It only shows to prove that this show is timeless and enjoyable to all ages.
Honestly this is one of the Phineas and Ferb moments that's stayed with me the most over the years. I remember the first time I watched it being so filled with emotion at this cartoon and small moment of comedy in such an intense moment blew my tiny little child mind. I thought it was the most brilliant writing to have ever existed. (at the age of like, 9)
My all time favourite gag from the series: Doof and Perry are fighting in Doof’s bathroom when Perry hits Doof with a pair of purple steps. It has flowers and reads Vanessa. Less than a second and so much story is told: -Vanessa spent her preschool years with Doof in that building -Her aesthetic used to be purple with flowers -Doof not only couldn’t throw them out, but couldn’t even put them into storage. Those stair hit me harder than they hit Doof.
This is also one of my favorite moments in the whole show!! I’m glad you’re proud of it, because it’s an excellent, excellent moment that makes me laugh every time.
And that is a man who knows how to make a character so well, he can explain excellent character building to others. Dan Povenmire, keep on rocking. You probably just helped a few hundred fiction writers build their characters with a 47 second video.
I always loved this one(both the episode and this moment in particular), because it shows such wonderful humanity in Phineas. Thank you, Dan, for for putting in the work for that expensive laugh.
I just watched this episode last week, and I honestly paused the show and laughed for a few seconds and rewatched it a few times because it was that funny
yeah i really do love it when you get those genuine moments of character that have been building up and it makes you laugh because you have spent the time to get to know those characters and understand them on such a deep level as if they where one of your closest friends
It’s amazing that you uploaded this today, because 2 nights ago my family and I were just laughing at our favorite moments and we all said this one in unison immediately! 🤣
Just a prime example of great writing honestly. Like you said, the last latter half of the episode had been building ever increasing situations that were wearing his patience thin, and it's done so well that even though it's slightly out of character for him to yell like that, we totally get why he did and it does get a laugh out of you because you don't expect it, and yet, you understand so well. You're even with him to some extent, like come ON, Candace!! Lol.
The we got served line from the squirrel in my pants episode is my favorite. That line actually taught me how to do comedy. That episode taught me how to set an audience up for a joke. Genius! It literally helped shape who I am today
I like it bc you never see him like that and it makes him feel more human bc normally you don't see him mad. I also liked in that one movie where he learns that perry is a secret agent, he's rightfully angry at perry and you never see him so mad and stuff normally when some big reaval that happens the character is like "Omg no way!!!! Anyways let's get back to what we were doing" but there Phineas is mad for awhile and just felt genuinely hurt by perry. You just don't see that much in kid shows!
This is always gonna be one of my favorite-est lines from Phineas and Ferb ever! You spent an entire season and 30 minutes with Phineas being almost nothing but happy- go- lucky attitude, and then BROKE IT! Gods I love this series! >:D
This is one of my favorite moments in the entirety of Phineas and Ferb, because Phineas NEVER yells and is always polite. You can even see Candace recoil in shock like "Oh my god did that come out of him" I feel like he's been pushed to his breaking point and a little bit of that anger that he keeps inside of him squeaked out. My favorite parts of this show are always when the characters reveal sides of themselves we don't get to see much, or are tested in ways that push them too the edge. Seeing Phineas get desperate and give up in this episode was so heartbreaking and unbelievable as a kid, and it still is now. I literally thought they were going to *die* on that island.
