    The flashing mode skipping mod is genius. I have so many LED lights I want to mod now!

    I'm glad it's not just me that hates those annoying strobe modes. I treasure my old Convoy torch for not having it, just three power levels with last setting memory... so rare.

      My adoptive aunt hates the strobe modes too as well as ones with dimmer modes. She prefers flashlights that turn on an off with no additional modes to separate those states. I on the other hand can tolerate it.

      You might want to look at the wuben c3 as every day usb-c torch.. 😮 no strobe modes and switching modes is not easy because short press is ultra short!
      It does have memory to keep the las Mode and is medium or high with one very very low candle light mode 😮

      Just remove the chip and place add jumper wires across the input & output. And problem solved.. the on/off switch will just turn it on & off like torches were meant to be..😅IV done it so many times with lights I like a use a lot 👍

    at first I suspected that i'll wont have 10W, such a small product to have such a modestly high power. Your thinking skills on how to get rid of the blinking modes using the fewest of the componentes made me inspired to look more into problems before taking any measures, sometimes problems are solvable way simpler than we initially thought.

    Excellent modifications. Putting the strobe modes in the main sequence is indeed stupid, but the makers of cheap lights don't care about usability so long as they can advertise more modes. I had never thought of using "feedback" signals to the mode button to skip the flashing modes, but you are admittedly more clever than I. I've assumed that modes controlled by a chip were simply unavoidable without reprogramming, but this demonstrates a smart way to "skip" those modes.
    Also, charging to 4.18V will provide longer life than charging to 4.20V or higher. Thanks.

    I learned a long time ago from another channel that bridging a certain transistor will get rid of the strobe, but also all the other modes, It will only keep the high mode and it would also be a bit brighter!
    I got 2 the same lights and tried on one of them and it worked as I described above!

    Probably the best electronics hack video on the Net, how to stop led torches doing the ultra-annoying flash sequence! It seems like only a minor niggle but gets problematic when you are using the torch for an important job. You only have limited battery life, your mind is occupied by the job and every time you turn the thing off to save battery it goes into flash mode.

    As always, many thanks for a great and inspiring review, especially since I also own this flashlight. The stupid flickering and the color of the light really annoys me too, so I'm going to start modify according to your pattern right away. Your ingenuity and ability to simply solve complex problems is enviable. You would definitely make a great crew member on Apollo 13.
    Note: it happened to me that the flashlight suddenly turned off when the main LED was switched to maximum power and did not respond to any button. When connected to the charger, it did not start charging and no LEDs lit up. I tried plugging and unplugging the charger repeatedly with no success. After a few hours I tried to connect the flashlight to the charger again. I tried connecting and disconnecting repeatedly and at one connection, the blue LED flashed briefly. Then after reconnecting the charger, the flashlight started charging. I hope it was just an excess and not a permanent feature.

    Thrunite flashlights are designed really well, including how you have to do a triple click to enter strobe mode (which I would possibly use in the case of an attacker, but more likely the blindingly bright mode that activates with a double click). The normal cycles are with one click and then there's a 'firefly' mode if you long press from off, for situations where you don't want to lose your night vision.

    Do some people actually like having to klick through all the power levels and flashing modes each time they use a light, or is it just a way to add "features" with absolute lowest possible manufacturing cost? How much more could it cost to add an extra button or two for selecting modes and have a dedicated on/off button?

      Even the "Magishine" lights I used to use for mountain biking do this, you have to go through the stupid strobe mode to get back from low to hi power. I think that's outright dangerous.

      The tale of the adding machine versus the slide rule is as old as the Industrial Revolution.
      What happens in a real-world business is, an engineer designs a product to do a specific job, and do it well; like a torch that can run for at least 24 hours on a single charge and still deliver a usable level of illumination (in case it gets left on overnight in the bottom of a rucksack) and has an auxiliary red LED (which will not cause pupil contraction and spoil your night vision, in case you need to look at a map or something). Then a marketing person sees it. Now, because marketing people get paid enough to be able to afford posh hotels, they don't often go camping (except perhaps on "team building" exercises, never too far from experienced staff at the activity centre), and so haven't thought about the real-world problems this new, improved torch is solving. But they are easily distracted by fancy bells and whistles; some of which are very cheap to add (in the same way as if you are using a microcontroller, you can always add one to the result of any addition, essentially for free; just by setting the carry before you start, instead of clearing it. If you are already doing pulse-width modulation, dividing down that frequency costs just a byte or two of RAM).
      Then someone else decides they can make a similar product for a lower price. And in order to show that theirs is "just as good as the original", they have to include all the bells and whistles. So it still does all the fancy flashing stuff. Only now, the battery they are using to get it a few cents cheaper to make so it can be sold for a whole Euro less in greater volumes has a slightly lower capacity than the one before. And the separate switches in the original design have been replaced with a single button that has to be pressed multiple times, or for different lengths of time, which is less convenient for the user but much better for the manufacturer.
      Then another manufacturer gets in on the scene, with their own ultra-cost-reduced version, with perhaps even some new marketing-driven bells and whistles ..... Which, by this stage, have become the thing the marketing people are really selling, and you can't even actually buy a decent product anymore since the original has been discontinued because everyone bought the cheaper copies.

    Most of those Chinese made flashlights have the same problems. You have to cycle through all modes every time you use it. I had one light which remembered the mode each time it was turned on but I gave it to a friend. They should all work this way. Also, most of them also suffer from poor quality switches. Constantly having to cycle through modes accelerates the failure. I've been able to restore some of the switches with Deoxit contact cleaner.

    I love the older oscilloscopes you restore. I noticed they have advantages when you want a steady looking wave. And not some yellow line that looks like it was draw a poxy rugrat animater. They're just far nicer to look at i think. And to have buttons when and switches that look like they needed planning permission from the local council from space on these genius investigations is savage looking. That's how buttons & switches where meant be, not touch screen or tiny buttons your not sure if ya pressed it or not,. Nope,... Gimme spring operated buttons and switches that rattle the bones in elbow turning them.. (something things really are forevey lads,)must keep an eye for for an auld scope on eBay. One with a diode curve tracer. . That's a must, Yeah something like that would keep me occupied for a few days at least..

    Some flashlights run on full power for limited time (3-10min for example), after that the controller switches to the second power mode (some do this gradually, and it is not noticeable).
    It will be better to leave the flashing mode, but make switching-off "one touch" - to cycle between modes as normal, and 3 sec after last button push to enter one touch off mode. Some flashlights (from Lidl) do this. But such a mod will be way more complicated (new controller).

    I suppose some engineer originally built the flashing and emergency SOS modes into a flashlight Because We Can™, and thought no more about it; but then someone in marketing was really impressed and insisted for all their flashlights _actually_ to flash. And ever since then, no manufacturer has dared omit the functionality from their products; just in case there is some customer out there who is so desperately wedded to the flashing modes, they would not even buy one without them .....

Surprisingly Chinese manufacturers such as Convoy or Emisar/Noctigon listen to enthusiasts and build very high quality flashlights with totally customisable LED choices, their temperatures and drivers, also having an actual modern UI without mandatory strobes or SOS.

      @@dino6627 in my case I have many 3,5 amp hour 18650 cells that last way longer than one hour, I just carry extra cells if I need more hours than these big cells already give me and about 10 three watt power led lamps that goes with them. I also got chargers enough to charge up to 8 cells at the same time. I can even do it with my free solar power if I so desire. I could do it with my 5KWh solar battery bank during a complete power outage too. I do not need to compromise light strength for more hours of light. all I want is good light when I need it on demand

      The Li-ion cell is much better suited for a torch like this, it can easily supply over 3A for the 10W LED. 3 AA cells would be needed to supply over 3V for the LED making it larger.

      Seriously, it seems like none of the Lidl products with USB-C ports have them.
      There was even this one Parkside handheld grinder (dremel-like) that used a USB C connector, but supplied a constant 12V. That was super shady.

      What does HSL stand for? Why doesnt it just say SON or HPS
      Works, but something was wrong, it took 3minutes to get from blue glow to normal, also it was extremly dim
      It starts up normaly now, but this was extremly wierd
      It said E inside triangle on the bulb, which implies its externaly ignited

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  5 місяців тому +2

      @@Veso266 Well, it's normal for these to take up to 7 minutes to reach full brightness. More worn sodium ones might be more bluish during startup. But also the first startup of a new lamp might look quite differently. SHL stands probably for Sodium High pressure, the L was used both for frosted (sodium) and for luminiphor (mercury vapor) lamps, C for clear lamps.

    • @JohnnyP561
      @JohnnyP561 5 місяців тому

      @@elynaindahbudiasih3279 Correct. As stated above, there is no such thing as white light with no blue in the spectrum. However, higher quality white light sources have a more continuous spectrum without excessive spectral peaks (typically with some peaks in the blue part of the spectrum). Good quality light sources have a higher CRI. As an additional note, very energy efficient sources sometimes have a trade-off with a lower CRI, as it is difficult to achieve both. At very high levels of efficiency, it is not even possible to have a high CRI at the same time, due to the limitations of the laws of physics, because you cannot beat the efficiency of a monochromatic light source.

      The white LEDs use a blue LED chip with yellow phosphor coating to give white light. Where sun light gives a full rainbow colour spectrum through a glass prism, with a white LED usually you only get blue and yellow bands.

    • @JohnnyP561
      @JohnnyP561 5 місяців тому +2

      @@dino6627 Most of them as this is typical design of most commercial white leds. More sophisticated leds have more sophisticated mix of phosphors. Still, there are also white leds which are just mixing RGB lights or are mixing both designs. Using phosphor layers is easy but it degrades over time and decreases efficiency. There are a lot of developments to find an alternative approaches.

Also you can thank them for standardized phone ports and many more stuff that improves health of Europeans and as a result the globe. People like to cheer the mega rich to have less taxes and produce harmful products to get even richer.
    This attitude or rather propaganda basically led to Brexit.
