I’m an Aussie and I grew up fearing him. He seemed such incredible fortitude and was an incredible competitor. I can’t emphasize enough how much of a shock it was.
Watching the video on the day of death of Shane Warne chops back me to early 2000's comment which I also read in a book written by a senior Cricket journalist in Kolkata where Alan Donald is saying "Whenever I go back to the run up with ball in my hand(May be some friction in trouser to keep the polish of the ball),I see the dead soul of Hansie giving direction to me what will I have to do and what field I have to set -So even though he was no longer alive, I still consider him my captain and he always will be"-That's the legacy Cronje created for South African team. But on the world cup semi final day of 1999 Hansie and another legend BOB Woolmer who had another tragic death during 2007 world cup made one blunder which cost SA that they didn't send greatest performer of that world cup Lance Klusenar to bat on early when he was winning match after match. If Lance was sent slightly up on the batting order, so instead of only 15 deliveries he could face 40-50 deliveries and SA would have easily won. Why don't you use your Trump card in a crunch match like that? So even though he was a smart leader with smart coach, they made a mess on this tactic on that particular day. Otherwise SA would have won the world cup and I was whole heartedly cheering for SA at that time. Regarding scandal of Cronje, yes he took money and confessed the truth-other's didn't. Again I am quoting from that book written by that journalist "Why Cronje's greed for money arose and then why his Christian conscience arose later that he told the truth to the world?"-Only he or his God knows. But due to Cronje, others who never told the truth were caught in the bookie rackets including several Pakistani players, from India Muhammed Azharuddin, Ayay Jadeja, from Australia Shane Warne, Mark Waugh and many later. So indeed he gave a right or colorful direction to the game by sacrificing his own life which changed the direction or path of the game in a rightful direction when entire cricketing fraternity was doubtful about the authenticity of the game.
Hansie Cronje's soul has not yet forgiven the South African Cricket Board and the African Cricket Team, I remember Cronje cried a lot, it was an unforgettable insult that the African Cricket Board had done injustice to Hansie Cronje. I remember this so clearly as a kid in SA....Hanse was ICONIC and revered by all South African's, black, white, indian or coloured. I honestly think that this is one of the main reasons for the demise of cricket in SA

I know that there were cases of where he asked players like Gibbs and i know that was was assumed that Gibbs accepted to only score below 15 in the match he went on to score over 50... I still feel Hansi was bullied into a confession beyond what he did and the public guilt just drove him to wanting a way out which would have been tell the people what they want to hear instead of defending yourself.
BBC did a good podcast series on the Cronje affair which I thought did a good job of humanising his story, speaking to his family especially. He was wrong for doing what he did and his name will forever be associated with it, but many athletes have done the exact same thing too.
Apparently he got an offer to fix a match for money, a dead rubber game in India, and he discussed whether to do it with the whole team. As it was something that one man couldn’t do by himself, it had to be the whole team. So they talked about it and ultimately decided to not do it. That shows that the team knew that it was happening though.
Sad to see so much negativity on Cronje in the cricket fraternity when he was introduced to the fixers by some Indian players. The subcontinent players have been at it for decades and it peaked in the 90s. Cronje a relative simpleton in the match fixing scandal and the first cricketer to admit his folly. A good human deep inside!
Many cricketers do it. I am sure it must be happening so often in IPL and international cricket too at times. Hansie was too honest to accept it. Others won't accept.

Very sad.One might certainly not understand what a cricketer goes through when he gets involved in match fixing. They are not provided sufficient protection because these bookies really are in contact with the underworld.Best example is of Sharjah where Dawood used to book most of the matches involving India and Pakistan and Pakistan used to win many matches there because of Dawood. Then it led to further match fixing incidents including this incident and not to forget domestic leagues like IPL or PSL or even BPL.It is everywhere.
Yes this truth hansie should have been ,forgiven, because he was such a wonderful cricketer and one of the outstanding captain the cricket 🏏 has ever seen

Why is Donald Trump or Meghan Markel's marriage there?
@AKlooter so how it's related to cricket?
He was the whistleblower so was killed.
😭😭
The best captain I have seen. Probably south Africa would have won a world Cup.
I will never come to terms that Hansie did this. There is much more that we do not know.My heart tells me otherwise. I believe his innocent and I do not care who says what. Hansie admitted he took the money but am sure it was not just him alone. He protected other people who was involved.
Still I respect him, at least he had guts to accept. Match fixing is everywhere just that we don't get to know.
Hansie will always get my respect for accepting his fault while azhar and all didn't
I always respected Cronje as one of finest players South Africa ever produced. However his confession disappointed many
My hero best captain
I believe he was one of the most sucessful proteas captains after Smith
Really a sad story of cricket
I don’t care what he did but my number one captain he is no one can match him
The only lifetime ban that actually stuck.
Hansie was a great man.. There were others involved like gibbs but he took full responsibility.. The charges was way too harsh.. Look at the aussies.. All of them are still playing today
He without sin shall cast the first stone!! We are all dirty MFs....
A shame he doesn't get mentioned when all-rounders get talked about.
The Dark Hour in Cricket if not for match fixing feel sad for Hansie though...!!
This music sets sorrow and regret deep inside
He had guts to confess...I wish akram, azhar uddin, kapil dev and other did same
Akram and kapil weren't involved you fucker. It was azhar, jadeja and malik trio. Kapil played in his prime in classic 80s when cricket wasn't even popular in subcontinent.
@@hardrock342 but that fucker prabhakar named him kapil dev cried publicly
I'm not a fan of Cronje. But if everyone is telling me to forgive Smith and Warner they must tell themselves to get over Cronje and everyone else.
He confessed to save the others like gibbs who were next on the block
He should be Banned for few years rather than for life because he confessed unlike other asian cricketer Salim malik , Ijaz ahmad etc..
how did it change cricket, New zealanders , pakistanis , west indians and indians caught after this incident
Cronje should be forgiven for his honesty and game changibg testimony unlike Azharuddin,Ajay Jadeja and Salim Malik who still defend tgemselves
Unforgiving world! Confession of match fixing is not easy thing to do! he should be forgiven!!!
Means if a person commits a serious crime and he accepts it, he should be forgiven??
@@jayeshk.d.3429 I mean to say he should not be punished with Life long Ban ! and grudge like yours till now. You should also forgive his act. You are saying like he committed crime and because of this, your whole life is upside down! Chill Mate!! Man is already dead!!!
Cullinan had no clue?? Hmm.
He would have had a field day in T20
ONCE POLLOCK EXPRESS TO UTPAL SHUVRO STILL LOTS OF RESPECT FOR HIM, ND TO ME STILL A HERO A OF CRICKET ND SHUVRO DIDNT HAVE DA SENSE & BRAIN WHAT IS RESPECT ALL ABOUT TO CRONIE FROM SA IN THE END A TRAJIC MYSTERIOUS AIR CRASH QUESTIONED LOTS OF THINGS
India had win the series played in india itself....and tragic to believe at that time also how india defeat South Africa such a strongest team.
He had b**s to admit his mistake. In no way he didn't deserve a punishment but we could forgive him now. RIP.
I actually kind of feel sorry for him r.i.p
