Summer is too brief here, zone 4 Canada. I harvested 110-120 garlic last month and rather than covering the empty space with straw and letting it be, I added a bunch of sheep manure compost and replanted. I'm asking a lot from my garden this year. Food is more expensive now and Lord knows what the winter will bring. I know I'm pushing it for a second crop in zone 4 but I planted the fastest growing and most frost tolerant veg I could find. I have frost blankets. Hopefully the food supply won't be disrupted due to CV19. I can ice fish this winter. I'll hunt and snare if need be. I never thought I'd have to resurrect those skills again! Hi Kevin, I really like your epic urban homestead sign. I planted some seeds the other day. I told my friend today, she replied why so late? In my head I was saying why not. I have grown tomatoes mid way through December. Unless we have a cold snap, most veggies will be just fine. Have a fabulous week. Take care.
I agree that microclimate is key. I also think that when a plant is in it’s perfect spot it grows better and produces more for longer with less disease. Your new plantings are looking great.
Lovely to see you comment on this video! Everyone who likes what Kevin does should go check out suburban homestead! He really has an art to his garden videos!!!
I went over and I do love the way your videos are done. I hope to get to see more in the future. I have a homestead in western NC and had a great garden this year. Cheers
I think we can all agree that we need a sped-up video showing Kevin pushing around a 100-gallon grow bag to chase the sun, all to a soundtrack of Yakety Sax, right?
Designing your raised beds so that they are slightly sloped towards the sun. The plants think they are a lower latitude Growing Mustard Greens through fall and winter . They have a better taste when they get a light frost. I live in Victoria, Canada, so our winters here aren't too cold. I harvest Mustard greens all winter long when planted out in late summer/early fall Plant in front wall or fence that faces South and has a clear view of the sun. The wall/fence will absorb warmth during the day and radiate at night.
I’m in the same zone 5A-5B and this was super helpful. Last season most of my fall crops failed due to not keeping the soil warm, I was having great success until the frost came and froze the ground which Killed all my crops just shy of harvesting. Thank you Kevin and many other gardeners (#GrowingyourGreens , #MiGardener, and others) on UA-cam for your knowledge. Now I feel I’m more prepared this season.
Im in zone 9b myself and recently started gardening. To be honest I have almost no idea what to plant, Maybe someone in the same zone will have information or tips.

This is my first year growing veggies and Ive learned so much watching UA-cam so thank you so much. I always get excited for your videos. I used to live in San Jose as a child.
We're heading into spring here. Where I live I have a similar long warm season. I found this video useful as it will help me plan my crops a bit better and more efficiently over the coming warm season as well as when it starts getting colder after that. Thanks for the info!

Since the 'virus' a gentleman recently won the right to do so in Court...good for him! We love your videos...best of all during these challenging times. Bless you for sharing. Love from Halifax, Nova Scotia,Canada!
@Peace Joy You're Welcome! I tuck hot peppers and herbs in all the time. One year I had an extra acorn squash. I stuck it in the front yard. It draped over the wall along the driveway! My neighbors were surprised to learn what it was. It blended so well with everything else it looked like a large leafed Ivy to those who didn't know better! LOL! I ended up with amazing squash!
Your sign is so cool!! Love it!! I got a late start this year starting from seed, so my tomatoes are still green right now....😖. I told my husband today that we are going to have tomatoes into Sept this year! Lol!! I still have lots of cukes, too, and I already made a huge batch of lime pickles. Lol!! I may have to make another batch. I live in Zone 7.
Have you ever made green tomato chow chow? It's a big Maritime Canadian thing. I think there are also southern Appalachian recipes as well. It's a good way to use up green tomatoes.
I'm still waiting on my tomatoes to ripen, I've got tons of them but none that are ready to pick yet. I CANNOT wait to start harvesting them. Thanks for the advice, I hope my lemon cucumbers and cucamelons ripen in time. 🤞🏻💯🥒
Thank you, thank you, thank you for that extra tip! I started my fall garden seeds, and they germinated in half the normal time, but I don't have space for them yet. Or so I thought. Thanks to your bonus tip, I know where to plant some of them. You have impeccable timing!
New place!!! How exciting. ! I just planted my new Greenstalk planter with bush beans. I am going to try greens as well and put the Greenstalk inside my greenhouse to see how long I can grow in there after the beans are harvested. I will be starting kale and spinach in trays to give them a head start I am in Zone 4
Where I live, our first frost is at the end of September. We can have several days where the temps will drop into the upper 30s to upper 40s; but, still frost pretty bad at night. Then it will warm up; but, not to the temps of summer. How long the warming trend lasts can vary from one year to the next. Then it will get cold again and won't warm up until mid-spring or later.
Mmmm I want to try glacier tomatoes and will look into the cold frames. Thanks again. Also with potted plants pushed together for extra root warmth in some northern garden centers we burn them up with mulch for extra insulatiin

I live on the Front Range in Colorado. Super hot summers now and cold winters. Unexpected 3 feet of snow in late April and big snow storms in September. I've been extending my grow season more this year by making grow pots and mulching and fabric covers over my cold frame. (The cabbage is loving it!) I'm jealous that you live where you have such a long season! I grew all my plants from seed this year because of the Pandemic. I had soooooo many healthy plants and wished I had more people to whom I could give them!!! My tomatoes look nice and are finally getting ready to have ripe fruit. I'd like to know how to cull seedlings or not feel guilty about composting the plants we're not going to have space for! How many seed does one plant??? Love your videos and have learned a lot from you this year! (And I am a Master Gardener!)
Thank you for the tips and information🙏 I also live in San Diego and I think we have a very good zone to grow all year long. Also, thank you for the seed recommendations bakers creak and the microgreens 🥬🥒🍅🍈🍋🌽🌶

These are just some materials you might consider..... If you don't consume a very high amount of the produce that you grow, you could also space out your plantings more. If you figure out how much of a crop you eat a week, you could plant only that much a week every week until there's no more time left for harvest (taking into account % viability of seeds o.c.). That way, you can grow far closer to your climate cut off date because the time between each harvest is only a week instead of however long the plant takes to grow. It'll also result in less food wastage if that's an issue for you. Of course, you could use a different time gap (e.g. 2-3 weeks instead of 1) if a week is too much micro-manage for you.
I live in Texas too and my pepper looks dormant, but my cucumbers are starting to sprout some babies. I used a shade cloth, trellis, and mulch with companion planting (marigold and tomatoes). Daily watering, sometimes twice a day.
@@TheElleification - Same exact setup here and watering, except not really companion plants (unless a few flowers and parsley count). My cucumber plant only produced 2 cucumbers this season and it looks like it's about dead now. Part of my problem is almost all the flowers were male. The peppers (jalapenos, serrano, cayenne) look healthy, but have produced very little. everything else is thriving (turmeric, basil, parsley, chard, spinach, chives, etc)
Hey Kevin! Love your channel and TT! This is my first year starting a garden and I am LOVING it! Planted Sweet 100 tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, spinach, cucumber, green peppers, jalapeños, basil and parsley. I do have a question! When should I start looking for seeds for next years garden? I started a little late this year (Zone 6b) and I want to start earlier next year.
First year using the bags and I LOVE them! I have 5, 10 & 30 gal and the gears are already turning for how best to use them for next year. Question, how would you move that 100 gal one? For my 30's, all I can think of is dragging a tarp from one side, underneath, to the other and then carefully pulling to the new location. Mind you, I have no helpers, so it's me, myself and I :) The others were super easy when I was preparing and then recovering from last week's storm here in NY.
Just transplanted Ilocano & string beans. Kangkong & okra is coming along. Not sure about my eggplant tho...still small. Hope it's not too late. Will see. Hmmm. Tc
Thanks for reminding me that winter is coming soon. Still waiting for my tomatoes to turn red here in SW Ontario. In a future video, could you do a tea garden? I have a pot of mint that I'm loving and was wondering what other plants I could grow? Maybe some that I could put in pots to bring in for the winter? Any recipe ideas? Thank you.
All great tips! I tried planting some collards under some of my "determinant" tomatoes, but to my surprise they started setting new flowers and fruit...woops, lol! But I still think it will be ok, b/c it's been so hot here in NC, that I'm sure even more mature collards will appreciate the shade.
Hey Kevin, love your content and your coloured grow bags- can share who the supplier is. I live in the Caribbean so we have no threat of frost but do hurricanes!
The weather is getting crazy in London, with less rain and warmer temps this! I like the self pot ideas as you can move and adapt them to the weather but they are really expensive here. I have a cherry tomato plant in a big pot that is doing better the ones in the bedding area rn. Due to the shops being closed, late in the day i used the seeds from store bought tomatoes. Just getting flowers now, which is late. It's that hot i am regularly putting my sweet pepper plant pot outside! Our 3rd gen sunflower seeds (originally from my son growing one at nursery and bringing home) are about 8ft tall!! Not so many multiple heads this year too. I wish you could just eat them with the shells on! We saved some for next year and add the rest to the bird seed. Rhurbarb luckily not so much of a bumper year as we usually get too much. We forgot to cut the roots in winter. Have you tried growing it there?
@@epicgardening I usually get to grow more. I so appreciate my first garden and a dream to get planting! Before i started growing rhubarb i was paying £2.75 (before brexit and covid) for 3/4 sticks. Normal growing season i was getting that a day! I bought it as a bulb/bud. You can't eat the first crop as too acidic. Yr3 you need to cut out the separate bulbs in winter. Like celery, when it falls off without tugging it ready. Leaves are poisonious. Good next to other veg. Chop into 1 inch cubes. bring to boil with mostly apple juice and golden syrup or sugar and its great with ice cream or chill and serve with hot custard. Rhurbard crumble is my no brainer but i like to add cinnamon, nugmeg and peeled and cored cooking apples and raisins. In autumn/fall i like to pick blackberries. It needs sugar to redcuce the tarte. My hubby wasn't fond of it until i made it and now he's a fan of me growing it! lol Definitely, value for money home grown!
Epic Gardening good luck getting the root stock, I’m in Corona, Ca and it’s so hard to get, you have to be quick and coming from Scotland originally I love it!💕
I loooove your content, and recently adopted some plants from my friend, who has the greenest thumb, and now I really want to get into growing my own plants on my balcony. I watched your video on plants that do well on shady spots, so that's for one side of my apartment. But my other balcony is facing a canal with salty water and quite a lot of wind (but also loads on sun) - what would you recommend tp grow in this kind of space? Thank you :D
Good tips but I think you misspoke about #2. However, please correct me if I'm wrong for my own edification. The hardiness zones are based on minimum temperatures, not highs, so moving your plants into a cooler area is not the same as simulating a lower zone. The average or typical maximum temperatures in a higher zone are not necessarily higher than the high temps of a lower zone. Utilizing microclimates allows plants to grow in the suboptimal season than it would normally thrive in such as growing a cool season crop in a place that receives partial shade or dappled shade instead of full sun while in the summertime.
i need a good break down video on things that are in my house right now I can easily do regular composting (lower my trash, and have compost going) not all COMPLICATED like most videos i have so many questions on how to compost i have a bin in my back yard going but again i have SO many questions
I signed up for chipdrop, and I was wondering if I can use those style of arborist chips on my garden? I've read mixed things, some saying that they harbor pests really well.
Such good tips! Do you think that cherry tomatoes will last very long as Fall approaches in zone 5a? The squirrels happened to plant a random cherry tomato plant in my garden and I just discovered it! Hoping to get a harvest or two out of it before it gets too cold!
Hey thanks for the great vids with some great info, I built a raised bed in my yard a week ago, 4 feet × 4 feet x 2 feet, and I think it was a bit of a mistake making it so deep because of soil cost (though your videos on that helped). My question is can I use the bottom foot to plant something like potatoes, I recently saw you mention you plant your potatoes quite deep, would this help utilize some of that space? And would I expect the potatoes to grow localized to where I plant them? Thanks so much, love your content!
Use Ellen White's method to plant your trees. I am a fan of your channel and I also am a new gardener who recently has purchased an acre of land. I live in San Diego area. So I started with planting some exotic fruit trees. My soil is pure clay like what we have in most parts of California. Trees are not growing as they should be although they look healthy. I am pulling 4 of my trees off the ground and replanting them using Ellen White's planting method. Do some research and you will find out how this method changes the life of your plants.
Since you are in an area where you can grow just about all year long, do you also have a good plant rotation process you use? I could also see how that would work into this topic...
I have a question. I live in zone 9 I believe. Some 9 or 10 Northern Cali, and I want to know if I can propagate plants in the winter indoors? I assume I can since the house simulates the right temperature conditions, but still, I’m not sure if this is correct. Also, will tropical plants continuing growing outdoors during the winter? It doesn’t get below 40 degrees here, so they will not freeze, they should be fine. But will they continue growing?
Hello i am a beginner gardener from Los Angeles. Im growing in my back yard what is frosty date here and are the peppers cucumber and zucchini I bought 2 weeks ago not survive? Also i got a beefsteak tomato plant final start producing will they die?
I need to show my stepfather this. He keeps trying to grow tomatoes to no avail. He wants to jump into several popular species like cherry tomatoes and beef steaks but treats them all the same.

Keep on vlogging.. keep on growing..😷😷😷
Well we think you're the bees knees.
🐝🌻😎✌
Love the epic urban metal sign.
LOL here you are talking about second sowings and I'm worried that we will get frost before my tomatoes ripen :P (3-4 'c at night here already)
Holy crap!!! Did you shoot that time lapse footage??! I LOVE IT!!!
Nope!
I’m trying taking cuttings and cloning plants to try and get a second harvest in zone 9b
Thanks for this. This will help me out a lot.😊😊😊🇨🇦
You’re welcome 😊
Lemongrass at the intro waving around like hiiiiiiii
Big fan of your channels.
thank you for information .
This man is such a dreamboat I can't stand it 😛😛😛
First year using the bags and I LOVE them!
Great vid, but I'm just not ready to hear "summer might be on its way out" quite yet . . .
Me neither!!!!
I hear you! Saw tree with colored leaves the other day
In Texas we are. About sick of this 100 degree weather
Not here. Down in Melbourne we've had 3-4 months of wet cold weather as well as isolation. So ready to get Spring and Summer plantings going!
I am. Hurry up fall!
Just transplanted Ilocano & string beans. Kangkong & okra is coming along. Not sure about my eggplant tho...still small. Hope it's not too late. Will see. Hmmm. Tc
They always take a while, they really like high soil and air temps
I need some Thai pepper plants for winter inside.
Thank you.
Tea garden would be awesome
Looks great 👍
All great tips! I tried planting some collards under some of my "determinant" tomatoes, but to my surprise they started setting new flowers and fruit...woops, lol! But I still think it will be ok, b/c it's been so hot here in NC, that I'm sure even more mature collards will appreciate the shade.
They will! Good experiment
Can you please make a video. Growing Malabar spinach Thanks, it’s been a request for sometime fro me
Hey Kevin, love your content and your coloured grow bags- can share who the supplier is.
Sounds like you have a lot going on...! Haven't tried rhubarb but it's a favorite of mine, so will try to next season
My hubby wasn't fond of it until i made it and now he's a fan of me growing it! lol
Definitely, value for money home grown!
Epic Gardening good luck getting the root stock, I’m in Corona, Ca and it’s so hard to get, you have to be quick and coming from Scotland originally I love it!💕
Great content! Thanks for the inspiration
My pleasure!
Thanks. BTW please share how to care for a kaffir lime plant in your Thai garden.
Will do soon
I loooove your content, and recently adopted some plants from my friend, who has the greenest thumb, and now I really want to get into growing my own plants on my balcony. I watched your video on plants that do well on shady spots, so that's for one side of my apartment.
But my other balcony is facing a canal with salty water and quite a lot of wind (but also loads on sun) - what would you recommend tp grow in this kind of space?
Thank you :D
I planted dragon tongue beans too💯🌱
Great choice :)
Can you do a vid on coconut seeds please
Good tips but I think you misspoke about #2. However, please correct me if I'm wrong for my own edification. The hardiness zones are based on minimum temperatures, not highs, so moving your plants into a cooler area is not the same as simulating a lower zone. The average or typical maximum temperatures in a higher zone are not necessarily higher than the high temps of a lower zone. Utilizing microclimates allows plants to grow in the suboptimal season than it would normally thrive in such as growing a cool season crop in a place that receives partial shade or dappled shade instead of full sun while in the summertime.
Great video 👍
me watching these videos alone in my room:
"ok daddy, whatever you say."
lmaooo
LOL
Definitely needed these tips,I just clones some tomato plants
great video dude
Neat! Thanks for this.
i need a good break down video on things that are in my house right now I can easily do regular composting (lower my trash, and have compost going)
not all COMPLICATED like most videos i have so many questions on how to compost i have a bin in my back yard going but again i have SO many questions
Hello, I’m an old gardener who has just started UA-cam! I don’t think I’m going to grow but I just wanted to show people me gardening😀
Kevin said "AKA Fall's coming", I live 90 minutes from Kev and it's 108 today LOL (I know the Inland Empire and San Diego are vastly different zones)
I need a video of which seeds I can plant now.
You can chop the top growth off if indeterminate to help finish them off!
I live in Zone 5b at 1300' above sea level with high wind. Mulch blows away pretty quickly. Any hints on what I could do to regulate soil temps?
Hey thanks for the great vids with some great info, I built a raised bed in my yard a week ago, 4 feet × 4 feet x 2 feet, and I think it was a bit of a mistake making it so deep because of soil cost (though your videos on that helped). My question is can I use the bottom foot to plant something like potatoes, I recently saw you mention you plant your potatoes quite deep, would this help utilize some of that space? And would I expect the potatoes to grow localized to where I plant them? Thanks so much, love your content!
You can try that, yes...I've found burying that deep actually works!
That's what I do with my potatoes and I pruned them and planted shallow rooted lettuce above them ....best lettuce I have ever grown this year!
I put in a raised bed this year too. I do have some sweet potatoes in it. I'm worried the dirt will cool too quickly, but I've chased the sunlight.
If you don't want to dig up everything else just for the potatoes, try asparagus~
Grow bags - are there some better then others. Do you recommend these over raised beds? Pros / cons. Thank you.
I"ll do a full guide on them soon :)
Epic Gardening Thank you
Since you are in an area where you can grow just about all year long, do you also have a good plant rotation process you use? I could also see how that would work into this topic...
I do yes, will have to do a vid
Epic Gardening thay would be awesome!!!
Nice
Hello i am a beginner gardener from Los Angeles. Im growing in my back yard what is frosty date here and are the peppers cucumber and zucchini I bought 2 weeks ago not survive? Also i got a beefsteak tomato plant final start producing will they die?
So are you saying the general idea is to maintain high temperatures late into the cooler season?
Yup and as much light as you can, then when you can't protect against cold
I need to show my stepfather this. He keeps trying to grow tomatoes to no avail. He wants to jump into several popular species like cherry tomatoes and beef steaks but treats them all the same.
