Salt Creek according to Traditional Tune Archive
"Salt Creek" is Kentucky mandolinist Bill Monroe's bluegrass re-titling of the older American reel "Salt River," although there are reports that his record company, Decca, was responsible for the title change as Monroe’s last single had been “Big Sandy River.” The record company, the story goes, thought that confusion from the similarity in the titles might interfere with sales so they insisted on changing ‘river’ to ‘creek’. Monroe recorded the tune in the 1963, with Bill Keith on banjo.
Alan Jabbour suggests that Monroe changed the title because “Salt Creek” was the name of a stream that ran by his Bean Blossom Festival site. He believes Monroe learned the tune from banjoist Don Stover (who knew it as “Salt River”). As “Salt River” it had been recorded for Brunswick by the Kessinger Brothers in 1929. Hobart Smith called the tune “Pateroller,” although this is not the tune that usually goes by the name of “Pateroller,” “Pateroller Song (The),” or “Run Johnny Run (1)” and variants. Drew Beisswenger (2008) points out that the names “Salt River” and “Salt Creek” are fairly interchangeable in the tradition, with bluegrass musicians tending to favor “Salt Creek.”

It is a good tune, but when I went to see the written notes, I found I would have to pay, $30. per month. There are other online teachers, that give free lessons.

Hi Arthur, If you want the full lesson of this tune, including sheet music, you have 2 options. The first one you have identified. For $30 a month, you can access over 700 lessons on the MyTalentForge.com website. Or, if you just want to have the lesson and sheet music for one tune, you can get those for $10 a piece. When you buy a single lesson, your access is not tied to a 30 day time limit. You get it for as long as our site is in existence. My Talent Forge has been around for more than 10 years at this point. And, you are right, we have some lessons that are free, as well. And, it's hard to make living by only giving away music lessons for free. ;)

@@Mytalentforgecom Thanks, I'll keep this email, for future reference. I use to pay a lot more for lessons, but now have been playing for 27 years, so don't want to pay for regular lessons, at least. I'm going to try and find the sheet music for that tune you played, which is really great.
