Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.
Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.
In his role as host of the seminal Sunday morning political program "Meet the Press" - which he took over in 1991 - he became renowned for his hard-nosed interviews where he frequently cornered some of Washington's cagiest political figures with tough questions.
Russert joined NBC News in 1984. In April 1985, he supervised the live broadcasts of the Today program from Rome, negotiating and arranging an appearance by Pope John Paul II - a first for American television. In 1986 and 1987 Russert led NBC News weeklong broadcasts from South America, Australia and China.
In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people.
Watching Brokaw here makes me realize how much I miss him as a news anchor.
How we miss Tim.
I watched Meet The Press almost every Sunday prior to Tim Russerts death. Since his death, I have yet to watch an episode.
The reason people loved Tim is because he an everyday person. Just a regular Joe. He was one of us. He asked the questions we wanted to ask. He was the father and wife that some of us didn't have. The upcoming election will not be the same without Tim. To quote Clarence from It's a Wonderful Life "You've really had a Wonderful life." Tim was our George Bailey.
I'm only 17 and he was able to get me into politics. What he was able to do was unbelievable and should always be remembered when talking about US politics. Whoever says he was a "vile piece of shit" should take a good long look at themselves
I believe Brian Williams was on an out-of-town assignment, so hence, it was Tom Brokaw who had to break the news.
By the way, NBC broke into the second round of the U.S. Open Golf tournament to make the announcement.
I still remember this so well even 13 years later. I was watching CNBC (US Closing Bell) when the story broke and they cut into the show with this report. My dad was in the kitchen and he ran into the room to listen to it
We need him now more than ever
He was a remarkable man. We are all lucky to have known him, whether we are smart enough to know that... or not.
Godspeed, Tim. May you rest in peace.
i miss this man,.i used to watch him when i lived in america.
Supposedly, Tim Russert was taping a radio promo for that Sunday's edition of "Meet The Press" (also heard on radio) for then WTKK-FM in Boston (the NBC Radio affiliate there at the time) when he suddenly passed away.
MTP has gone downhill ever since Tim's passing.
i feel bad for the guy announcing the death since he was a friend
I don't know anything about politics and I hardly ever watch the news and I still knew Tim Russert.
I just heard this on MSNBC...This is so sad...I watch meet the press each day! Wow, surprising. We will keep him in our hearts.
Tim Russert was a great man and even greater journalist.
I already felt bad about his passing, but he died during an election year. You can't get too much more unfair than that. I did not know until after the fact that he was a lawyer which made me think that explained a lot on how he came across to some of his guests.
inside voices
wow, what a shock
No, what honestly happened, was NBC was taking video of the Meet The Press opening. The audio Engineer did not turn down the audio level from that source until that person heard it and turned it down. It was not done on purpose.
Tim Russert was irreplaceable.
Masterfully said, sir.
And I agree with you: All this noise from the legion of uninformed, short-sighted, vitriolic blowhards on the internet when a family is grieving the loss of their husband, father, son and brother is shameful.
Russert was obviously loved and respected by his family, his friends and his peers. If I knew nothing else of him, that would be enough for me to admire him greatly.
My sincere prayers and thoughts for everyone who is personally touched by his passing.
Why is his face all puffed up?
Well said, Mr. Brokaw.
Goodbye, Tim, we will remember you. Rest in peace. Let's hope that either David Gregory or Andrea Mitchell would become the new moderator of "Meet the Press".
he had a heart attack!
On Cnn right now Wolf just annouced that it might not have been a heart attack. I'm telling you all that something is not right.
the world would, and believe me when I tell you I type this with such immediate brevity, be a wonderful place without you in it. There is no need for someone of your words littering the world.
RIP Tim Russert
class act
Tim Russert was a great fellow and fine journalist. Fifty eight - not young, but not very old either. A shocking loss nonetheless.
