- We visited a great solution for boats: an electric motor. It's was amazing to see it in person as we don't see many videos about it and also it was great to see in person to hear it, to feel the throttle and the have the idea of the size of the system. It's impressive.
More information about it:

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it www.oddlifecra...
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

Duca was like a kid in a candy shop with that electric wonder boat! I can't even imagine the $$$ one of them cost. Thanks for the trip to the boat show(s). I am jealous.
It seems we can see 1 200 000 € on a sign on the side of the boat, that is roughly 1300000 US$. I don't know if it's the price with all the features that were presented in the video. That's the kind of boat none of us, viewers can afford...
Thanks!
Thank you!!🥰🥰
What a beautiful boat everything at fingertip control but a little scary when you can’t feel the throttle increase but a dream boat to live on and cruise around , expensive in the initial outlay but well worth it , also full control indoors what a dream no hiding from the wind and you can see all around, thank you for taking us on board ,all the best from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Groovy video
🥰
Thanks for taking us along...love the new propulsion systems!
☺️
Approved!
What an interesting video. It's great seeing the future and that boat you showed us was quite remarkable. The engines so simple and quiet. Keep well and safe. James.
Sailboats are motorboats I’d be excited motor boats would go electric
Great and informative video again.."Made in the Netherlands" I am proud as Dutch skipper..maybe one day..is the plan..e-drive too on my 38ft steel boat..😊
That's incredible, theres a lot to be said for electric boats. I think they have a lot of bonuses. Thanks for the tour. Keep up the good work. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿
For sure... there is still a lot to learn about them as well. We were really curious about it. Cheers, mate
There’s a lot to be said about sailboats sailing and reliable back up system of clean energy
As a car guy, funny seeing a VW coolant ball being used to cool the motor. heh
My most favourite new catamaran the 50 or 54 Windelo ,would buy one today if i had the money ❤
This is so interesting to see
Windelo is the gold standard in electric performance catamaran. Too bad you didn't tour the cabins which have really cool windows. Great video guys.
Great to see you making this new move. I don't know what boat you are considering.
However I strongly recommend that you consider STOK electric in Holland for your electric and motor system.
These people are truely building a system that is specifically designed for sailing. All other systems today are based on merging of the shelf units especially when it comes to electrical generation. Please, please investigate.
'Made in Italy' is good. Have owned a 50cc Benneli and 850cc Moto Guzzi motorcycle. Both were excellent!
☺️
I hope things will work out so you can get that engine in Odd!!! Thanks for sharing!
Always love your adventures guys.
💕
I know why Duca was like a kid in a toy store, the beauty of the whole boat! I'm sure you were like that to Roberta but you were filming most of the time and I couldn't see your face! The helm being inside/outside is pretty nice too! You would have to open the windows/portholes to get the wind flowing through your hair!😂😂 Side note, my Patreon account didn't take my info this month, a few days ago. I don't know what happened. I haven't changed anything and the expiration date is well off. I've sent them a message to see what the problem is and hopefully it will be fixed soon! I miss all the cool stuff!!! 🙏🇺🇸🇧🇷⛵👣🤗👍
Muito show a feira náutica, coisa linda ver tantas ideias in loco 🤩🙌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤩
😘
It would be so Cool for you to have electric motors on ODD!
I actually don’t think Odd would have enough space for batteries, generator and solar panels 😔
Even with the replacement of your old diesel tanks with batteries?
@@OddLifeCrafting
@@gardenrailroading We would need the tanks to have diesel for the generator
Have a wonderful week be safe stay healthy
Thanks. You too my friend
you do know that this experience was from April 12-16, right?
@@stevestuffmusicstudio6770 I know, but I wish them a safe and wonderful week. Thank you for your comment. And you have a great week as well.
E teslmente um show euma feira de boat show. Todos ficam encantados..Um abraço ❤❤

I honestly believe that these types of boats(electrical systems) are just millionaires toys for island hopping. Using massive rare earth batteries for propulsion is going to run them down so quickly. The sheer cost of replacing them multiple times(compared to the lifespan of a diesel engine) has to be actually calculated, before I would eliminate that diesel engine. They are a desirable idea for silent motoring into and out of marinas, but you have to do the math for power drain at speeds above 3-4 kts of extended motoring or God forbid against 3-4 kts of currents etc. I just don't see the math adding up for people who live on and sail their boats between continents.
Excellent!
☺️
Boa tarde Roberta e Duka.🥰🥰🥰
🥰
The forward cockpit makes so much sense, electric with regeneration capabilities is the future
Love you guys! Was wondering, do you guys have any plans to make and market the odd life crafting little flags? There's alot of us odd life travelers out here. Maybe not everyone is in a sail boat. I am in a trailer. Some are in motor boats. Some cars, trucks, vans and other things. It would be nice to boondocks and see another odd life flag flying. It would make an immediate connection for all odd life travelers, whoever and however and wherever they have chosen 😉 to move around this world, our home. We could all send u pictures, where the odd life flags fly. Hope ya enjoy the idea 💡 😊. P.s. I really like that power system.
Seems like the super quiet electric engine would really enhance the sailing experience..
I feel like I’d forget the motor was on 😂, but I love how green it is. Nice find!
😁
I would love to see you guys hookup with "Gone with the Wynn's" especially after seeing your interest in electric powered sailboats. Have you touched base with them at all in the past?
We meet them in Miami in 2020 and then again on this BoatShow we showed in this episode, we had breakfast together ❤ They are great people
I wonder what a lightning strike would do.? Would you lose your propulsion? An awful lot of stuff to go Kaput. Check out the Hybrid drive diesel/ electric that Samson Boat Co put in, really interesting and more options and safer.
stop dreaming and get the boat of your dreams, get that cat!!!! Cheers
Queridos Luca y Roberta. Buenos Vientos!!!!
Gracias por la infomacion ☺️
Computer boats sound to me like the end of of sailing. Imagine that boat in a few years, when salty water will have made its way to the electronic circuits. I wonder how the boat will behave. I think this marvelous ( and expensive) gadget won't have the reliability of an old classic boat. It's lifespan is definately intended to be shorter ever since the first sketch.
Vive la France !❤

There is the future, right now, at the boat show.
Hello I remember watching you guys from the beginning, I remmeber fred helping with the boat, is he still around or have a channel? Thanks !
Hi. He did start but he has not been posting anything lately youtube.com/@Crazylittlethingsaboutus?si=QVkuxZ7CqurmPjA_
Did you put an order in for the catamaran 😊
Hehe. It’s too big for us 😁
👍👌👌
👍
You guys need that engine set up in 5 yrs, It is probably hella expensive right now. But, on the flip side of that, in five years they tech is going to be insane.
I think you need to ask the question, how long before the battery's need replacing? and at what cost, a diesel engine is forever a battery is not..
Remember all the high tech systems come at a high price , so you better have a BIG fat wallet .
I bet with better propellors that 1.2kw could happen at 8 knots sailing speed. Also you could adjust for more regen which would lower your speed from prop drag if needed. Changing the pitch is and software updates is what doubled the regen for sailing UMA. I will say bigger battery banks are nice. I still think another 30kw of battery banks would be better. The goal is to never run your generator but 1 time a month just because you don't want an engine not being run for long periods.
They produce Basalt fiber in Brazil from what i understand and some students actually produced a day sailor using it.
Now that Odd is sold did you fine a cat for your future ?
With all that dependable new technology, she still carries hundreds of liters of diesel. There's nothing like the density and storability of fossil fuels.
Electricity is fine until you start using it for propulsion. People seem to forget the horrible hockey stick curve of using electricity to propel your boat above say, 3 knots. Also, the very real expense of replacing those batteries much, much earlier than replacing a diesel engine.
Yeah, as far as a back up goes electric’s fine wind number one
I'm pretty sure that my boat is too small for an electric drive like this one. It's something to keep in mind for the day when I have a bigger boat like Odd.
Wow we are 5 month in past °o°
We don’t have been filming lately. The month of May we also didn’t film much, so pretty soon we are gonna be closer to real time 😉
Looks really interesting. We have a power catamaran from Meta too in StrongAll - great to see others.
I didn't understand why they were using an AC genset instead of DC one, given FP make both. They would have to transform the output from 230V AC down to 48V DC, which would have decent losses when you are talking 20kW. Any reasons they gave?
This is cool! We love Meta boats. The generator is actually 48volts dc
@OddLifeCrafting agree - serious boats that are just great! I've been binging your channel - great work you've done.
I thought I saw the 25i when you went down into the second engine room, and I thought that model was an AC. I must be wrong - we've been looking for a DC 48V genset of decent size 15-20kW as, with a cat we'll have 2 motors (probably 12ea and run them at max 8 or so) and figured 2 DC genset for redundancy. Oh, and massive solar since there's no mast.
up to now , nothing is better than diesel engine
First South Australia ❤
🎊
How is the time life of these system ?
There are boats using the system for more than 20 years ecoboats.com.au/products/electric-motors/bellmarine-inboard-motors/
Just a reminder: Your boat has become a major source of income for you.
Which Cat was that?

Qual é a autonomia do odd e qual é a capacidade do tanque de diesel?
635 litros de diesel e aproximadamente 1100 milhas se usar só o motor, sem usar as velas 😊

What would a lightning strike do to that boat?
Well... One of the options is to turn it off in case you are in a thunderstorm... You can use some equipments to help to dissipate the lightening elna.de/en/sea/ddce-lightning-protection/ ( It's Roberta here)
Lightening just has to be close. It destroys components which are totally disconnected. The only protection for lightening is insurance.
Great vlog today (but you NEED your hair cut). LOL
Too much complicated electrics for serious cruising in remote places.
That boat is a miljonairs toy ,notting more
I know you are converted, talking to a salesman. Be careful, you want the reliable horsepower when things are critical. However, you are more experienced than I , I want reliability
We had a lot of good feedback about the motors after the video from people that use it 😉
It all looks great but no thanks for me. What does one do when all those screens go black. You would have to be an electrical wizard to trouble any kind of problem.
It's Roberta here.. I actually would not know what to do if the mechanical diesel engine has any problem as well 😬
There is no way that boat averages 11 knots - 264 miles a day - in real world conditions. I would be surprised if it did 220.
www.windelo-catamaran.com/en/windelo-54-owner-interview/amp/ also fb.watch/ndXbNofgcb/?mibextid=KZAQMH
Wow! Three generation sources, incredible range. I guess time will tell about durability.
Can this be refit?
Curious what you would be left with after a lightning strike
@@andyvee1186 you can isolate for that. There are also a lot of electrical connections in a moving marine environment. All of which are detrimental to electrical systems.
But first you have to have a total gas engine break down. Make it all dramatic and have Patreon pay for electric.
Well, the break down happened years ago ua-cam.com/video/QUClRe5bj6g/v-deo.htmlsi=9Cy-DkVFEI2ndhB5 😬
i has a build/service and repair lot factory machines and automation, germany made all good machines, italy made worst machines, if need change one bearing etc, germany have all easy open and change, italy machines need all take off and then can change simple bearing, italy made worst planned machines because if need repair something, need take off all what normal engine not need take off, horriple repair anythink, germany has plan and made lot better all can repair ewerything easy and simple, but italy horriple repair any, all have worst made.
Thats the amazing future but what will be the cost after a lightning strike?
People need to get some brains, when these boats get wrecked after a week or so of no sun, and in the end the Yank loved insurance is no longer available, your dream will be gone.
