  • I spent a bit of time updating the 2AR-FXE build in an attempt to reduce the cost of the build. I ended up making less power than i wanted but i still ended up with some significant cost savings and a lot of potential for even more future cost savings.

    So would this work with a 2AR-FE? Im asking because I have a 2013 Scion TC Manual Transmission.
    So im wondering if the camshafts, valve springs and retainers, and intake manifold from you and nixspeed would work with the stock ECU now.
    Another question I have is can I buy your and nixspeed’s intake manifold only, with the stock TB, and install it would I make more power? Would I need to tune for that?
    Im asking because I might just get the intake manifold for now, and get everything else once im ready to make that step

    I'd love to do this build but here in the the UK I think I'd struggle doing it on a low budget! The engine isn't the problem, the hybrid engines are common and plentiful on eBay. The transmission on the other hand seems to be impossible to find, which means a very expensive import from the US :(

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks
      @FrankensteinMotorworks  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, unfortunately there's just no good answer for a worldwide easy to use transmission. This swap mostly makes sense for North America and a few other countries. In the UK the 5 speed transmission would make more sense but unfortunately the transmission is slightly bigger so it interferes with the crossmember.

    I know exactly what you're talking about with those huge intake runners actually robbing power at the lower flow numbers your valves and heads can do. I was listening to an old drag racer talk about running Cleveland cylinder heads on his engine build and he actually made more power by filling the intake ports partially with epoxy because it increased the air velocity. Better fuel atomization, better cylinder filling. Odd engine that you might appreciate: he was running a 300 i6 with several Cleveland V8 cylinder heads welded together. He made the holy grail 600+ (>1hp/ci) with that engine back in the early '70s. All home built stuff too. No big money racing team or sponsors behind him. Gentleman by the name of Sherman Sligh.

The reason the ZZW30 kit does not use the E series trans is because it is too big to fit without cutting the chassis and requiring chassis trimming & welding reduces the already tiny market by a huge margin.

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks

      I generally delete the balance shafts, it does not have an effect on engine reliability and in theory it allows more power to make it to the wheels but i have not measured the difference. At a factory 650rpm idle this motor does have a decent vibration without them, i would probably not remove them on a street car.

Even though the FXE has high compression it’s not designed for high rpm. With that in mind I checked and saw the 2ARFXE and the 2AR have the same injectors. Increasing air flow via cams, intake and exhaust will only take you so far. Matching your prior changes with increased fuel injectors may wake up those hidden horses.

    I am seriously considering dropping a 1AR-FE into my 03 Corolla. I have acquired a 1AR short block from a Venza. It is consuming oil like they all do and just needs to be rebuilt. I know a MR2 is not a Corolla. But. What were the challenges you faced doing this swap? Just trying to get an idea what I might be getting my self into. And before anyone says it, yes I know it’s a weird and expensive swap for just a 2003 Corolla but it’s something I think would be cool. I also know the 1AR and 2AR are “different” engines just one has more displacement. But basically they are the same right?

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks
      @FrankensteinMotorworks  Рік тому +1

      The 1AR-FE and 2AR-FE use the same block and head. all external dimensions are identical so there's really no difference in the swap. the only big issue with the 1AR is how rare and expensive it is, otherwise it's exactly the same.
      The only difficulty in swapping the 1/2AR is how tall it is. The second issue is generally ECU but you can just use the ECU i make for the MR2 application and that problem is solved. It should be a relatively reasonable swap.

    What stock ECU do you mean? There's a guy in the UK making a kit to fit a corolla ECU into the mr2 housing for a bolt in mappable ECU conversion rather than stand alone (adding a wideband sensor kit) which would make this REALLY cost effective as we cannot map UK/EU ECUs.
    Also with 185lb.ft at the wheels is it possible to keep the mr2 transmission? We also don't get many suitable donors for those and I'd be thrilled with up to 200lb/ft at the wheels normally aspirated for my road car keeping my JDM close ratio 5 speed LSD for extra mechanical advantage.
