I have two of these, bought them almost an year ago. They sound good but now I'm going to connect them in the studio mode and give them enough power to break in. Hopefully this way they will sound better. Thank you for the video.

Had the SR9080's as rears with non Def-Tech fronts. Not a fan. I'm aware they're for home theater but I stress tested them a bit with ambient music & they had some bad resonance & buzzing. There was also a dried up glue chunk rattling around inside one of the cabinets that I had to pull a driver to remove. Sold them off after a year.

    I stole a pair of SR8080 and a pair of SR8040 at a thrift store (all 4 for $75).
I have been in the audio business in the past and always messing around with my own systems, buying higher end equipment and speakers when I find a good deal.
First time i have had or listened to Definitive's speakers or Bipolar speakers for that matter.
When I saw the small size of the woofers (and those funny mushrooms sticking out). I wasn't expecting anything that great from them. Boy was I wrong! These things sound amazing and I mean as main left and right speakers. Not surrounds as they are really meant for. Using the SR8080's and a sub and wow, I never heard a open sound field like that since many years ago with big Magnepans. Which would be impossible in my bedroom. You really can't tell where the sound is coming from basically. Just fills the room...
(I have them in the left and right corners of the room between 4 - 5 feet off the ground).
Great frequency response (just need a sub, but that's normal these days). Very good highs (I usually need to use add on super tweeters for my liking, but really not needed with these) and great mids and all around sound quality. Very impressed...

THANK YOU SO MUCH 👍👊 for the demo/info and pointing out the FLAW!
What on earth was the Def - Tech Acoustic Engineers thinking of when they designed the RS9080 🥴😵‍💫🙃
It has been confusing why they haven't sold them in PAIRS! on there website and only sale them singly,
I was going to purchase x4 in total to replace my MISSION 73 Surround sound speaker's which have seen better days had them since 1996 when I fist got into the HOME THEATER SYSTEM game
Def - Tech are not cheap at all in the UK on AMAZON there is one advertised for £748.33 (single) DREAM ON !!! rip off!!!
BACK DRAWING BOARD for some other different surround speakers!

Just got one of these but haven't purchased a second yet. Video was informative but gave me pause about buying the second. Have you considered asking Definitive about your observations as to why they designed then this way?

    • @OldtradesReviews

I never asked that question. Your referring to the port I'm guessing?

@@OldtradesReviews correct. Might be worth the inquiry.

couldn't you put something to redirect the sound coming from the port? that way you would still hear the sound but it wouldn't be directed to your ear? like deflect it.

if I plan on doing a basic 5.1 setup, would I buy a pair of these, and put them behind me?

I just got the SVS Ultra Surround speakers and am experiencing the same low volume almost muffled playback you described with your Definitive SR9080s. I'm replacing a pair of Definitive ProMonitor 1000s that I was using as the surround channels and so far the SVS Ultra Surrounds don't sound nearly as crisp and clear in the high end. I'm going to try to break them in with some loud music playback to see if they improve. I'm curious, did you consider the SVS Ultra Surrounds or any other bipoles when shopping for your surrounds and if so why did you choose the Definitives? Hearing your experience with the ports and the out-of-phase effect, I'm glad I didn't end up choosing the Definitives which I was also strongly considering.

In my opinion SVS Ultra speakers are not as crisp sounding as Definitive. I think definitive has the edge with the tweeters, but SVS, has a bit clearer midrange when comparing apples to apples, models that have a dedicated midrange driver. I did consider the Ultra surrounds as well. The Definitive were on sale and much cheaper. I think Definitive offers a great value for the money. I have their satellites and towers for many years. I am happy now with the bipolars.
