Is your sight glass leaking at 10:03 or am i wrong?
I had someone email me about it and sure enough it looks to be leaking. These things happen when you cut corners trying to save money.
I was about to say this!
go-go gadget eyes! yeah, that was leaking visibly, without any leak detector cruft. the last installer likely cooked it to death, seeing the line size was wrong for it and they braze filled the void. R.I.P. o-ring and thread locker(doubles as sealant)
I agree wholeheartedly.....replace more than just the widget.....think about the other components that are a part if the system as well.....that boat seems to missed by many people....another great video Rick....thanks for sharing
It will work fine. I ran R-407a in old R-22 (POE oil) coolers, good gas but won"t be around forever. Some units are still going strong 8 years later. Now I run R-449a. Almost $200 bucks cheaper per jug, pressures are good. Got a couple units going now 2 years on it. Seeing less 22 equipment these days.
The tail on the sensing bulb is supposed to be up. Round part facing back towards the coil.
The best position for the bulb is horizontal not vertical, but yes, if it is vertical, then the tail of the bulb should be at the top.
The whole " you touch it you own it "mentality customers have really has to go , especially if it's my 1st time here , how can I be responsible for the past 10 years of neglect ? Ridiculous...
agreed
Yeah im definitely getting that bag when they have the 2fer
Great Video. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice weekend
Thank you! You too!
There was something bubbling by the sightglass @ 10:05
yea the sight glass is leaking bad.microns only 2000.
yeah it was whizzing gas/oil... missed by him and multiple previous techs, which goes right back to whom installed it and cooked it to death. wrong size tubing brazed in.
but having a braze joint that close to o-ring/sealant-joints = super-duper POOR ENGINEERING. so I do not blame the field techs/installers(the very least bit)
That sight glass is leaking 😮
Yep. It was mentioned a few times. We went back already.
Nice work Rick.
Excellent work 👍
There really should have been a LLSV and a A419 temp. control included in the quote. Cycling the compressor with the thermostat without a pump down is not accepted practice. I know you are there for start up and had not been involved in the initial survey.
Oh, I’m sure if the person who quoted it ends up seeing the video he won’t be very happy about what I said. But I also know the customer is trying to save money anywhere they can and $50 could be the difference between getting the job and not getting it. Sometimes you just gotta get the job done and then you can sell the upgrades after that. Pay me now or pay me later. I marked it on my paperwork that is recommended those items be installed.

Hi I am an industrial refrigeration technician. from Israel I have a question related to Freon mixing. Can Freon 427 replace 438? Is 427 suitable for working in low temperature industrial cooling systems? Thanks appreciate your time.
We don't use either but this google search said 427a is for low temp. darment.eu/refrigerant/r427a/#:~:text=Refrigerant%20R427A%20(sold%20under%20the,improves%20by%205%E2%80%9310%25.
Good job Rick.
Hi Mr Rick good job 👍 I was just thinking of this why you're not using 448a ?seems like you have Poe oil in the compressor.
I removed the mineral oil and put the poe oil in.
Sight glass was leaking for sure
Yep. It got replaced
Even the stratus would have picked up the leak on the sight glass.
Nothing else better out there,
Rick are going to be at the training symposium in Florida at the end of January first of February?
I’m going to the 2024AHR show in Chicago. I really enjoyed the Florida trip but two shows kind of gets expensive.
@@HVACRSurvival agree, hell just one trip is crazy on what it costs, let alone both. 👍
Enjoyed the video, Regards from UK.
Awesome! Thanks Terry! Where in the UK are you?
@@HVACRSurvival Thanks Rick I'm not far from where our "Guests" land. By the way I like your work Style, interesting jobs.
Probably doesn’t have a solenoid cause that recover isn’t big enough to handle to pump down charge. Definitely needs an ETC if no defrost clock. Personally would have thrown some nitrogen in there if system had existing leaks and I saw some work like that. Still a very good video and a good example of what we deal with in the field.
According to the history, our guys found the leak in the evaporator, but like I said, it was quoted for all day, but because the helper went with the installer and not me, he ate up a lot of my time. And at this point, I was paid based per job not hourly.
@@HVACRSurvival yeah I totally get it. My company goes the same thing expect they don’t always send a tech to do the start up they just let the install guys do it and I find it three months later iced up to the nines haha. Good videos bro keep them coming.
The best solution for that system will be a KE2 temp controller with air defrost built into it
the stems on the service valves are not rated for microns, while they are open,I would put the caps on to vacuum.
Good morning what CFM pump are you using and are you happy with it Thanks for your time
My NAVAC battery pump is four CFM, my Fieldpiece is eight CFM and my JB pump is six CFM. Thanks for watching!
Nice job ... Thx
At the ten min mark you can see the sight glass is leaking
I couldn't see it at the time of the recording but it was pointed out to me on Friday. I'll need to let the office know and go back.
Those sight glasses are so terrible once a long time pressure comes off them. Great video again!
Hey watch all your videos. I’ve been a hvac residential service tech for 5 years. I want to get into refrigeration or commercial work but I have no idea how to due refrigeration. And all the company’s around me want me to already know it. Any tips
Buy and read this book. I hate books but really like this one. amzn.to/470AujJ
I worked on a cellar cooler that had no solenoid... it had a stat that controlled the evap fan and a stat for defrost?? The condensing unit had a pcb for pressure sensing and fan speed... i couldnt get it to work correctly it was about 12 years old and i forget the make but how the hell was it supposed to shut off when it reached its set point??. There was no room stat.... but could it be controled by the txv and the pressure sensors??. Non of the paper work had been filled in and when i first saw it it had been butchered but i got it sort of working... anybody see anything like this???
do you prefer the Navac 4cfm or the Fieldpiece unit ?
Each has its strong points.
Why 407C? Wondering if it is a “regional” thing? Seems most people in my area switched to MO99
There’s several different refrigerants to choose from, a lot of it comes down to personal preference and experience wired the type you’re using. Also how many chemicals are in it, because when it does leak it will leak at different rates and the less in the mix the better. R448 has four types, R407C has three. It’s just a tossup. I don’t like MO99, I seen it used an air conditioner more than medium temp and I didn’t like the way it worked in air conditioners.
All these gasses on borrowed time but I like 407c more than M099
for best/proper function, txv sense bulb mounted vertical should have the cap tube coming out the top. when horizontal the cap tube should be at the top most position
why? the "refrigerant/gas charge" within should be a liquid in the bulb and gas in the tube/valve head, because the gas flows easier and makes it react somewhat faster. also the bulb should be lower than the TXV itself.
sometimes things just don't work out great and the way it was found, mostly off the pipe in mid air, was very bad. nothing is ever perfect in the real world. 😉 not busting balls and I know how the equipment gets hammered and abused out in the various fields.
boo to the replacement installers, they should have re-piped out horizontal enough for sense bulb, then turned vertical to existing line. (yeah I know, time crunch in and out fast)
I recommend using volt meter to check t stat, instead of click, and also that is a 10 lb max receiver, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing, your correct, I should have used my meter.
i thought it was 10% less of the original charge when using r407c
That’s what they say but I’ve seldomly seen that to be the case. Use your superheat and subcooling.
Awesome video
What was your final superheat?
I set it at 8.5*
