Nixon was born Neill Kirby McMillan, Jr. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1957. He grew up in Danville, Virginia, and attended college at the University of Virginia, where he earned a degree in history.
In the early 1980s, Nixon began playing music with Skid Roper, a washboard player, and guitarist. The duo quickly gained a following in the Los Angeles underground music scene and released their debut album, "Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper," in 1985.
