My boyfriend used to play this for me on days like valentines day or my birthday etc. , he'd stand at the bottom of the stairs and play it up to me whilst I was still asleep. It was a sure way to get me to come down to breakfast. God Iove this song.
The western wind is blowing fair Across the dark Ægean sea, And at the secret marble stair My Tyrian galley waits for thee. Come down! the purple sail is spread, The watchman sleeps within the town, O leave thy lily-flowered bed, O Lady mine come down, come down! She will not come, I know her well, Of lover’s vows she hath no care, And little good a man can tell Of one so cruel and so fair. True love is but a woman’s toy, They never know the lover’s pain, And I who loved as loves a boy Must love in vain, must love in vain.
The lyrics are actually by Wilde, just not written for the play; they're taken from his lovely poem "Serenade," subtitled "For Music." I'm glad the movie-makers took this opportunity to have it set; it makes a perfect addition to this scene.
we watched this in my AP literature class after we read the play lol the whole class was cracking up and then after the movie they starting singing along with them xD
That was my AP class too! The movie is much truer to the heart of the book than its critics give it credit for. Yes, some scenes and dialogue were cut out, but the movie is stronger for it as a movie must flow more naturally than a play.
@@acoupleofcakesI loved the part where the servants are carrying the piano and Algy is playing it and the part where the ladies initially ignore them by going inside and starting to read until they hear them singing again, inside the house this time.

@sinnia12 It isn't a musical, in the film they added a montage of the men trying to gain the ladies' forgiveness after the muffin scene. This comes just before the last scene where Lady Bracknell arrives etc.
@sinnia12 It's not a musical. They are serenading the girls to try and get them to come down and talk to them. As far as I know its about the only song, and it's certainly not a musical.
*heartlessly eats muffins*
Alex Mallia well I can’t eat them in an agitated manner, the butter would get on my cuffs
Besides, I am particularly fond of muffins.
There's no reason why you should eat them all in that greedy way >:(
@imagination.junkyard I wish you would have the tea cake instead. I don't like tea cake.

awww that's so cute!
That is ADORABLE.
I can't believe I went 20 years without discovering this masterpiece.
yes 20 years is a very long time without discovering this masterpiece
@@taramann5957 indeed, especially considering that’s the entire time I’ve been alive 😂
I only just realized that "No, you go first, I'm not good at the high bits" is a subtle (or not so subtle) dig.
Hah

Oscar Wilde is brilliant! The best playwright ever, ever. This song captures his spirit in writing this play.
The lyrics are actually by Wilde, just not written for the play; they're taken from his lovely poem "Serenade," subtitled "For Music." I'm glad the movie-makers took this opportunity to have it set; it makes a perfect addition to this scene.
Why wasn't this version in the film? Captures their relationship so well!
Exactly!
Guaranteed to put a smile on my face no matter what mood I'm in.
we watched this in my AP literature class after we read the play lol the whole class was cracking up and then after the movie they starting singing along with them xD

Wilde was a genius..and all these actors are superb!!!
Took me years to see this wonderful movie. Greatest ever. Love Earnest...

"You're overdoing it. Less is more..." LOL
LOVE this song. And the fact that Wilde did write the words, albeit not for this play, is very cool. The music is perfect for it too... :)

It was funnier watching you get the humor and cracking up hysterically..

“I can hardly eat muffins in an agitated manner, can I?”
is there anything sweeter than a guy's love
yes. candy.
This screams a Brian & Stewie moment in Family Guy!

I can't believe how Oscar Wilde had to spend his last days.. such a creative genius omg so sad
I've never been one for wanting an acting part that involves kissing, but I would for this play...........
“You do want them to come down?” 💀💀💀
this is so cute :3
oscar wilde wrote the song lyrics haha
Come down..:)
this. this is not what i stand for.
@Yermog Yes. Very British:)
@hamstersar Don't worry its meant to be like that, its just reenforcing the pun Oscar Wilde used :)
"Hōw dáre you"
