  • If you follow Tom over at his ‪@rocketresto‬ channel, then you likely know he (and his brother Gary) are big C-body and police car nerds. So naturally they were giddy when they came across this original, mostly surviving California Highway Patrol car - which might just be one of the greatest examples of both of those things. On today's episode, we take a close look at this fine automobile, before turning our attention to the engine compartment - where the outlook is not exactly rosy.

Ignoring the haters would benefit you and the channel as a whole. You won't have to stress over trying to explain truth and circumstances to folks who must bitch no matter what and the fans of the channel will get more focused expert content. The haters as they say, will just keep watchin and hating. Call em haters or call em late for dinner, just ignore them. Big fan, love the channel and all the nuance. Cheers

    It's surprisingly in complete(ish)
Condition . These cars were rotted out , too ferrous particles , decades ago , in New England .
I genuinely appreciate you detailing , the historical timeline ,

    You're absolutely right ✅
If it wasn't for the forward look Era , we wouldn't have the ,

Very cool car! A trick I used on stuck motors after pulling the plugs and soaking the cylinders I put a breaker bar on the crank bolt pointed down to passengers side and jacked the car up with the breaker bar on the floor jack putting some of the cars weight on the breaker bar. I would let it sit using the weight to break the engine free. On my father in-laws slant six I had rebuilt he asked me to adjust the vales at 500 miles. He left the car on his driveway keys in the ignition but didn't tell anyone he had drained the oil and left to get more oil. Yep I started it and walked away to let it get warm and seized it. The soaking and breaker bar on a floor jack got it to move after a couple hours.

Well if it was me. I would pickle it. Pull the carb. Pull the valve covers, spin the plugs in tight, make up a cocktail of Trans fluid, marvel, and diesel and fill the intake till you see a puddle. I forgot to say loose the rocker shaft. Go cylinder by cylinder opening the intake valves. It will fill all cylinders. This is a farm boy tractor cure for stuck tractors. Most cases it works in 30days or less. Some not so much. The key is the cylinders are at a angle thus why you have to fill them to the top. But it's worth a shot and it's 20bucks. Or Pull it and full tare down and we know you need at least one more motor tore down 😂

Oh Boy, this is fun!😊 My first car was a 1964 Dodge 330 Wisconsin State Patrol car. 383 w/ three on the tree. I bought it at a dealership for $500 in 1969. Not a car a 17 year old should have. As I always joke, "I fell in with a bad crowd and bought a Mopar"!😢 The poor car went through several variations as I broke things. At one point it was a 383, dual quads, 727 torqueflight and 5:13 gears. This cars was the quickest car I ever owned and in the original set up the fastest. ( Ask the State cop and the Judge!😢)

Just a little, back and forth until he had full revolutions. Must be careful and have full consideration for the valves of course. Likely, pulling the engine will be quicker and easier in the end. :)

In cases like this I fill every fluid hole in the engine with #2 diesel. Crankcase. Right to the top. Intake valley. Pour it down the carb till it overflows. It’s ok, the overflow will run into the intake valley. Seriously at this point there is no downside to trying this. Except for maybe wasting 2 gallons of diesel. My dad had a 62 with the 413 and 4 speed. His had dual 4 barrel carbs and was ridiculously fast from gas station to gas station.

My dad and I used diesel left it set overnight on a 1948 military dodge power wagon with a flat head 6, hooked it behind our 1968 dodge semi tractor put it in 3rd gear and popped the clutch a few times until it broke loose and started running with a lot of smoke. Changed oil and plugs, already did carb. Never did another to that engine but maintenance and was still good when sold in 1996.

You were lucky you didn't break any rings or pistons, imo.

Back in the 80s, a friend of mine and myself had an auto repair shop. We had a kid who worked for us. He bought a 69 Gran Prix SJ with a seized 428 engine. We swapped a 71 455 into the 69 and I wound up with the 428. When I tore it downcI noticed there was something really weird about the crank. Turns out the crank was twisted. Who ever did this must have had that engine way up there in the RPMs for some time. Never saw this before or since. I know it's not a Mopar story, but still worth passing on

The channel is fully living up to it's name: Dead Dodge Garage... VERY dead 413!

I'd just yank the motor and make everything good inside it.

Knew this one was a challenge..still held out some hope....oh well... due diligence done....Look forward to the forensic tear down....I am surprised money conscious Chrysler changed the rear end for one year only for 1964 ..Suspect it was supposed to be 63 too but didn't make it ...Looks like they saved $ by using interchangeable bumpers front and rear...

Interesting times at Chrysler. I always liked the 2 doors and the convertible 😊

Important to remember that nothing EVER quite goes the way we want it to with these old machines. Keep trying Jamie. You’ll get it to turn.
Throw some oil down the fill. Could be some rust around the crank and mains if the pans been dry for a long time.

Very, very cool wagon on the trailer at the beginning of the video. Will that one be featured in a video?
Hope the cop car will be put back on the road. Would be a fun one to drive.

Unfortunately that one is just passing through. Really wanted to do something with it if I could. But it’s real rough.

I like the look of the 63 more. I had a 63 Custom 880 convertible years ago. It was black with white top and red interior. The early 60's 880's are fairly rare.

Use an extension of bar and a strap and let it sit with pressure?

I bet that 880 hustled back in its day with that 413! Probably around 3800lbs give or take?
Always wondered if the 63 & 64 880’s had the (fussy IMO) Total Contact brakes that the Chryslers ditched in 62.
