For this video, I am reviewing the TravelPro Maxlite 4 21” Expandable Spinner Carry-on bag and the Delsey Helium Aero 19” International Carry-on. Yes, I understand they’re different sizes, one meant for domestic travel and the other meant for international.
Although they can’t be compared apples to apples entirely, this review I hope still gives you a good idea of their durability, storage, and function.
Some of the most important, and most often skewed information about these bags is the actual measurements of them. I decided to debunk this myself and have provided the actual measurements in the video and below:
TravelPro Maxlite 4 Measurements:
Advertised Measurements: 9”x14”x21”
Actual Measurements: 10”x14.25”x22.5”
Delsey Helium Aero Measurements:
Advertised Measurements: 9”x13.5”x19”
Actual Measurements: 9.25”x13.5”x22.25”
I performed a series of tests, and as I imagine some comments will point out, they’re not perfect. I had to figure out a way to replicate multiple years of wear and tear on these carry-on bags and this is the best I was able to come up with. If you have any ideas for future tests, please let me know!
In the end, both of these are great carry-on bags. Both TravelPro and Delsey manufacture a wide variety of other travel items such as backpacks, suitcases, garment bags and so much more. The TravelPro was incredibly lightweight, and the Delsey really didn’t have a smell as a lot of others have claimed.
In the end, I think it’s realistic I could have gotten anywhere from 3-6 years’ worth of use out of either of these carry-ons.
I’d love to know your thoughts and your experiences, please feel free to message me or leave them in the comments below!
**NOTE: Just to reiterate, this was not a paid advertisement. I didn’t receive anything from Delsey or TravelPro to do this video. I will admit I did try and get them to send me something, but couldn’t get the attention of anyone. I ended up purchasing these on Amazon with my own money and decided I wanted to destroy $160 worth of product (Genius right?).
I paid about $100 for the Delsey and was able to get the TravelPro for only $60 brand new! If you follow the links below, look for a “warehouse deal” on the page. It said it was going to show slight use, but it in fact did not. It was brand new, still with tags!

I’ve been doing a ton of research on my next luggage set and this is by FAR the most useful video I’ve seen. Mainly because:
1.you showed how each was able to hold 3-4 days’ worth of the same clothing/items
2. You did some harsher than average damage tests that gave me a good idea of the worst-case scenario for each case
Well done. You should do this full time as a business.
Thanks again!
I totally agree this is the best video on luggage that I have seen even if it is 3 yrs old. You gave me something to think about especially with the TSA locks on. Now concerned that they could break or get severely damaged. Then what. Thanks so much.
Agreed!
Great review! Purchased the TravelPro today because of this review. Thanks!
Great! Glad to hear! Let me know how it does for you. I always like hearing other people's opinions vs. mine.
Very solid product shots!

Outstanding review, thanks!
Great video. It is nice to see exactly what fits inside. The wheel test was an excellent idea and while throwing it across the driveway that many times seems a bit excessive it is good to see a failure point. Thank you for the information and allowing me to make a better decision.
Thank you! Definitely helped my decision!
New sub here, you really deserve more especially with this kind of reviews.. i just bought a red delsey helium!
Thanks for the useful Video. I will get the Delsey base on your test.
Michael Bui Thanks Michael, please be sure to use a link in the description to buy! I get a very, VERY small commission from your purchase, but it helps pay for future bags to make videos for.
Thanks again!
Wow great review!!
Thank you for this review!

Rita, glad to be of assistance!
Great review.
Thank you this was a great video! Really appreciate it.
Thanks Angela!
Brain,
Hi!
Thanks for such informative video.
What is the weight of these carryons when empty?
Thanks!
Excellent video! Thank you Brian!!!
David - Glad I could help! What did you end up purchasing?
I just bought the Delsey. Thank you again for all your help Brian!!!!!
Thanks for helping me decide. Travel pro it is!🤗
Great video
Nice video.
Excellent review... Next time, you have to add something, one of the purposes of the hard shell baggages is, that protects the inside from any kind of liquids!! Hard decision, personal decision... Nice review
The Delsey Helium Ero with front access has a serious design flaw in the zipper where it unzips around the bottom. It hangs up and doesn't open all the way. The laptop area encroaches significantly into that side.I returned it.
The concrete test and dropping a weight on the bags really hit home. That is probably exactly what happens at many airports when they are loaded and unloaded. I am a frequent traveller, but I am split on hard sided vs soft sided. A soft 🎒 without a trolley/ wheels holds more than a 4 wheeled 🎒. I used to be a samsonite fan, switched to delsey hard case and 4 wheels recently.
I wish you did get paid for your review! It was way more helpful than most of the others I’ve seen! I’m still deciding on what carry on to buy but I like the delsey after your review. Just wish it was under 7lbs..
I heard the airlines treat TravelPro luggage better because they think you are crew. I just ordered the Travelpro Crew Versapack max for $173 with shipping and monogramed Luggage Tag
Grate video
great video
Thank you!
At this time the TP Maxlite is about $80 bucks vs $120 for the Delsey. Maxlite is TP's entry level series. The TP Platinum series is made much stronger, but if you go to the new TP Crew Expert Global for $170 you will get their toughest bag that would withstand these tests much better. The Crew Expert is also smaller in external size (complies with 22x14x9) but with the same packing volume as the maxlite.
Best review ever
Thanks Clara! I really appreciate that!!
Hi.. I bought two travel pro spinner carry on's for my daughters (9 & 12 - they're about 50-70 lbs) and they LOVE to sit and ride them! Any testing for that? LOL. Appreciate the review though. Having said that... If the bags are fully packed and the kids sit on them - it still holds up. Carry ons will always see less abuse that checked bags though and soft sides can squoosh down a bit if needed to fit into airline sizers.
Haha, I love that! That's hilarious, but maybe I keep that in mind for future reviews. Doing these types of reviews and videos should have a little fun in them too right?
What the dimension of your laptop? I'm thinking of buying the travelpro and i have a big ass laptop
Hi brian. M going to futher study in yemen for two years n m looking for the best luggage size max 30kgs all in there, clothes, dry food etc. Advice me pls. Shud i choose soft or hard case for example and what more to take into consideration? Thanks!
Hey cinta Muhammad!
Here's links to all the stuff I mention below:
Maxlite 4 - amzn.to/2FG5D4g
Chester - bit.ly/YTChester
TravelPro Checked Bag - amzn.to/2H7ku6U
Space Saver Bags - amzn.to/2JoH5NI
It depends! If you plan on using it frequently over the next 2 years while in Yemen, than I'd choose something like the Maxlite 4, since it has several more pockets to organize your stuff. On the other hand, if it's a one-time journey over there and you'll be staying in one spot for the majority of the time, something like the Chester as far as carry on luggage goes. There's fewer compartments, but more internal space where you can stuff things. Since you did say 30kg, which is about 66 lbs for those using the imperial system, you may even want to consider getting a checked-on bag since you'll be able to hold much, much more in it. Additionally, think about getting some space saver bags to suck out the air in some of your stuff. You'll be able to fit a lot more in the bag, you'll just need to watch the weight limit.
Thanks for abusing your bags for us, this video helped me make a decision
Thanks for the feedback! Any suggestions on other products you'd like to see or other tests to do?
Thanks!
Brian
@@BrianFischer I thought this video was really great too. Other suitcases that seem to come highly recommended at the minute are the Calpak Ambeur and the Away Carry-on (or bigger carry-on). It would be fantastic to see those.
Thanks @@oscarhirst9119! I actually will be doing a comparison between the Away and another bag here soon. I'll have to check out that other one.
What no underwear? 🤣Great video! Thanks
Ha - someone finally noticed. Originally did the shot with underwear in there, but re-did it because, well the internet does not need to know what undergarments I wear.
Do you prefer this versus the Chester?
Hey Jonathan - Lately it's been the Chester. When I travel I keep anything work related (laptop, papers, etc.) in my backpack and then pack all my clothes in my carry-on. Since the chester maximizes one big compartment space, that's what I prefer since I won't be trying to get into my carry-on on the way to my destination.
Can someone tell me how deep is the delsey?
Anybody travel to colder climates? most of the reviews i see all have light clothes... for a video with not a lot of Budget you did well!
Gewglesux Thank you! I appreciate it!
For carrying heavier clothes, pick up some space bags to reduce the amount of “air” in the bag! I use these from time to time: amzn.to/2RZr7ed
@@BrianFischer is the Travel pro "maxi" the same as the "walkabout"series?
Could you drop a link?
@@BrianFischer I looked on the travel pro site... the bag i was asking about was made especially for Macy's. and is currently on clearance.. if i can find a proper link i'll post it.
These tests were interesting, but would carry-on luggage need to meet such an exaggerated durability threshold? I am sure that checked baggage would suffer more abuse which would warrant the severe knocking about that you gave these cases. Great that you sacrificed your own bags for this display though. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Gordon Warlow Hey Gordon, in short, no they wouldn’t need to meet these thresholds. Ideally I’d like to take both of these through the same conditions over the course of a few years, however that isn’t practical. One I’d look a little funny with two carry ons and that’s a lot of travel.
The point of these tests was for the sake of time and consistency. While they’re not what a bag would see every trip, one could definitely see one of these occurrences at least once or more over several trips throughout the year.
Gordon Warlow I think it’s beyond helpfully. When u travel a ton and always push getting to the airport sometimes u board last. Every now and than I got stuck checking my bag in a full flight and I’m getting to my gate last second. I appreciate the abusive of these bags nice job to the creator. I shall use the link to purchase!
You are testing a cabin baggage dude, the only one who will hurt it is yourself...But thanks for the test, I find it helpful!
You're right! Or other people handling it if it has to be valet-ed. That's the only purpose of the video is to help!
Was waiting to see you set the bags on fire...
I like that idea
Drives me nuts - packing videos where people put bare (DIRTY) shoes inside a suitcase. Always put shoes in some kind of shoe bag or protector, even plastic grocery bags work fine. I totally cringed every time you dropped weights and threw the bags around. Carry-ons don't get rough treatment like that, even if checked the airline "gorillas" don't damage luggage so badly. I would've like to see a drop test with full bags dropped on their wheels, which happens if you do check a bag and they come out wheels first on the bag belt. That being said, your video is thorough and informative. Thank you.
Dianne Williamson thanks Dianne! I’ll remember that for future videos!
Agreed with the bare dirty shoes. 100%.
Cool
Thanks!
My delsey lost a wheel cover and the zipper broke because I put a boat engine inside my suitcase and attempted to close itm.
Thanks for the review. The rip on the front of the TravelPro was from the weight being dropped on it, not from the concrete. With nothing in the bag to support it, the fabric of all layers ripped when the weight tried to push through it.
Troy R that’s the odd thing, I still think it was the concrete. I’m not sure if you can see it in the video, but the first dropped compressed the whole bag in. I don’t *think* that’s what tore it and I don’t remember seeing it after that test, but maybe it did!
Troy R What bag are you leaning towards or others are you looking at?
I went with delsey but I probably should have gone with the other
You forgot one important test, cats. I'm getting delsey.
Was about to purchase the travelpro. Now i won't. Thanks for the vid
When throwing it, put some weight the luggage.
So both are too big for both AA and Delta carry on. Glad I found this before I bought either of these.
Depends on if you're flying domestic or international. I've taken both on AA for a domestic flight, never had a problem. In reality, I think it depends on your gate agent. Most probably won't bat an eye at a bag that looks 'close'.
Travel pro spinner wheels are garbage. Customer service sucks worse.
