Finding the best carry on luggage doesn't have to be hard! With so many options to choose from, I have dwindled the list down to what I would view as the top 5. I was lucky enough to take measurements of all of these bags, so you shouldn't have any trouble bringing these on any airline as long as you haven't over-packed.
Alaska airlines, Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Frontier, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, United, Envoy, ExpressJet, and SkyWest should all allow the carry-ons listed in this video. However, it is up to the inspectors in the end to determine if your bag may be taken on.

You are a fantastic reviewer-- comprehensive, organized, detailed, and easy to listen to. I like that you have nothing to gain from a manufacturer--not sure how you can afford it but it's great anyway.

Thank-you for your video. I've been a road warrior for over 20 years and I would never, ever buy a carry-on bag with those useless tiny "spinner" wheels. The first time you end up having to check the bag (or gate-check it), you'll find one or more broken wheels when it comes out. And if you ever have to walk a few blocks to your hotel on rough surfaces, you'll hate those tiny diameter wheels. Not to mention that the spinners take 1-2 inches of space out of the interior of the bag.
What I look for is a wheel design that permits me to replace the lame plastic wheels you get on most bags with skateboard wheels that can take years of abuse, and roll well on rough surfaces (from cobblestones in Europe or South America to broken concrete in New York).
The other weak point is the carry handles, especially the top carry handle. Look for very solid multi-screwed attachment to the bag, and check to see how hard it is to replace the handle when it inevitably gets ripped off by some tarmac gorilla unloading your checked bag.
I agree with your assessment that softsided bags are better, especially if they have an expansion feature. Travelpro is very good for maximizing the interior size of the bag while still fitting into carry-on spaces, but their quality in recent years has been irregular, so shop carefully.
