SWCP Day 31 Polperro to Whitsand Bay 4K

- My journey along the south cost continues. I wake to a beautiful golden sunrise and walk from my campsite back down to Polperro. My walk sees me pass through Talland Bay, the bustling, busy Looe, Seaton, Downderry, Portwrinkle and finally after what felt like a very long day I reach my campsite at Whitsand Bay. I get my first glimpses of Plymouth on this walk and by the end of the day I am walking along very familiar stretches of the coast.
Another super video Paul. Your videos really are bringing back the memories. When I reached Portwrinkle last June I sat in the Jolly Roger Cafe and decided I done enough for the day. There being no campsite, I called the golf course in the vain hope that they'd allow me to camp there for the night. They politely declined of course but the lovely lady, a local to the area, advised me to camp on the beach, which I subsequently did, along with another hiker. The owner of the caf allowed us to use the water tap too - so we had a memorable beach camp along with a driftwood campfire. Keep em coming PP - great stuff👌
That’s a good story Mark. I was going to stop at the Jolly Roger but they had a £10 minimum spend for card payments sadly. The golf course was so quiet I prob could have got away with camping there but I wouldn’t have been able to relax.

Thanks Neil. This was the first walk where I felt I was walking in familiar territory. I’ve visited other places along the coast previously, but the places I walked on this stretch are more familiar to me.

Thanks Roger. It didn’t feel like too much climbing on this one. Maybe a few small steep climbs but nothing as severe as the north coast. Hope you had a good birthday.
Great video as usual Paul, lots of helpful information. We’ve still to cover Portwrinkle to Rame, and although it’s only an hour or so from where we live - we’ve left it to the end of our SWCP hike. Another ten days and we’ll have completed it. It’s been so great, we might start again 😂.

That was a massive walk. But as usual full of Cornish beauty with the sea, the cliffs, the flowers, the greenery and the paths. And also you telling us what you are doing and where you are. Thank you. Really enjoyable 😊
I would have very happily stopped at Portwrinkle if there was a campsite but there was nothing until Whitsand unfortunately. I was starting to feel a bit sad on this walk as I was aware that I had nearly finished the Cornwall section.
@@pilgrimpaul7798 I can really relate to that. We have plans of visting / walking some of our favourite places in Cornwall again before we continue walking outside of this lovely county 😄
Another great video fella, heavy mileage. Have to say I didn’t really enjoy this stretch when I did it, found it a bit uninspiring compared to Polperro to Polruan which is truly epic in my view.
I know where you’re coming from. I think I still enjoyed it though as they are places I have visited many times since I was young(er) and I enjoyed connecting them with the coast walk in between.

Hi Paul ,,sorry to bother you,,I said a while back I am walking SWP end of next month for two weeks,,starting at Minehead on to Padstow if all goes well ,,what I wanted to ask you,is could you recommend a sleeping bag,I haven’t found one yet,it’s a minefield,i am 5 10 inches a bag that will keep me warm in the summer months ,,I have a Trekology ul 80 Matt but not yet a sleeping bag,,could you help me out in some way I am coming up to 69 years of age always been into fitness so I am giving this a go just subscribed to you Paul ,,,,maybe a bag that’s light to carry and not to dear in price many thanks Stewart Wiltshire 🏃♂️⛺️👍👍
Hi Stewart. This is such a minefield of a topic. Obviously we are all different, hot sleepers, cold sleepers, some prefer down bags whilst others opt for synthetic. All I can tell you is that I use a Leviathan 900 down bag from Go Outdoors. It is very warm and I find it very comfortable in the cooler nights, and when it’s warm I unzip it and use it as a quilt. It is a mummy shaped bag which is a littler restrictive if you move about a lot in the night, but the mummy shape reduce on pack size and weight. This is a budget option as far as down bags are concerned, I think I paid about £110 for it. It does loose a fair amount of feathers each time I use it but as I said it is budget and you get what you pay for. Having said that I have had it over a year and it doesn’t feel like there are any cold spots developing from the loss of feathers. My recommendation is to go to a few shops and have a look at them in their stuff sacks and opened so you can feel the bag and try it for size. Hope that’s of some help.
