  • 93 KHJ Boss Radio Los Angeles. Hear Robert W. Morgan, The Real Don Steele, Charlie Tuna, Humble Harve, Johnny Williams, Sam Riddle, Scotty Brink, Gary Mack, Frank Terry, Johnny Mitchell, Roger Christian, Dave Diamond, Bill Wade, Bobby Tripp, Steve Clark, Tommy Vance and more. A fun, creative look back when Bill Drake, Ron Jacobs & Gene Chenault created history with the "more music" format and the legendary Disc Jockeys, "Boss Jocks", we loved listening to on our AM transistor radios in Southern California. This video remembers the early years of 93 KHJ Radio in Boss Angeles,(1965 to 1970), as seen through the eyes of a boy growing up in the 1960's, in Anaheim, CA, who loved the 60’s Rock and Roll music and who dreamed of becoming a Boss Jock. You’ll also see & hear KHJ 20/20 news with Jim Lawrence, Marv Howard, Art Kevin, J. Paul Huddleston, Lyle Kilgore, Bill Brown, Roger Aldi, Danny Baxter Sports and more, along with some of the greatest 60's songs that 93 KHJ Boss Radio ever played.
During the 3 months or so of creating, researching and working on this video, I found out that this would not be considered "PURE" or "Authentic" to many radio enthusiasts and I don't claim it to be but the pictures and audio I've added and adjustments of radio recordings or “air checks” were necessary for the story to flow and won't change anyone's perspective of how KHJ Radio really was. I loved 93 KHJ Boss Radio and just wanted to say so from "My Perspective" and "My Dream" as a boy and try to make it a little more fun to watch and listen to by adding a little humor. Some of you may say "Very Little" but I’m reading comedy books and hopefully my jokes will get better. There are many "Pure" & "Authentic" websites and Videos out there with untouched KHJ memorabilia and radio recordings or “air checks” and I'm grateful they exist. I've listed the links to many of those sites below and encourage you to check them out. I wanted to create something different while showing how KHJ Boss Radio influenced me as a boy and I’ve added something special at the end that I haven’t seen on any other KHJ tribute video. It's called "Where are They Now" and all the information you see there comes from extensive research. If you believe something is not accurate or should be updated, please let me know & I'll add an “Update” section to this “Video Description” after verifying the information. Even though my video can’t be filed under the “Pure & Authentic” category, it could be filed under the “Creative” or “From a Fan’s Perspective” category. My channel is NOT “Monetized”. Some of the song artists may receive something but that’s up to UA-cam. Not everything should be about money. I hope you enjoy my Tribute to 93 KHJ Boss Radio and would love to hear your comments, both good & bad.

Thank you Gary! It's nice to have an original Boss Jock comment on my page. I remember you very well Gary. You had one of the coolest voices in Boss Angeles! I have to tell you though, I searched and search for a more recent picture of you and couldn't find one anywhere or I would have included it on the video. Hope you are doing well Gary. I appreciate you taking the time to place a comment here. Means a lot to me.

I enjoyed your post of KHJ. I transferred to Southern California from Michigan State in the fall of 1966. I was born and raised in Detroit, where CLKW was the king of radio. 50,000 watts of power and it covered a large swath of the midwest. While at Michigan State, I was a weekend DJ at WJIM in Lansing, then to top radio station in that area. I went into education for a career, but never forgot the wonderful time I was in radio and its hey day. After transferring to USC, I would come home in the summer and still do the weekends at WJIM. I loved KHJ during my time in California and it was similar to CKLW, with great DJ's, but my heart was still with the BIG 8. Thank you, Bob, for letting me into your world and memories of the great 93 KHJ!

What an absolutely wonderful romp down memory lane! I was born in Los Angeles in 1955, grew up down the freeway 15 miles in Lakewood and still live there. I was a dyed in the wool KHJ fan! It's amazing to get a feel for how many of those jingles and bumpers are still replaying in my head after so long. Thank you for the links;. A big thank you for the bios at the end. Great job!!! It was........ BOSS, BABY!!

My family lived in Anaheim in my grammar school years. Used to ride my bike over the Harbor Blvd - 5 overpass to Disneyland Hotel to watch the KEZY DJs through the window. Became a DJ later myself. KEZY was a great station -- '62 - '66 that was about all I listened to (didn't have a record player yet).

This was a great week! Two days ago I was contacted by Gary Mack, who was one of the first original "Boss Jocks" on 93 KHJ. He made my day! Thank you Gary! Yesterday, on my wife's birthday, my KHJ Tribute Video reached 1,000 views and it did it faster than any of my videos. (actually I only have 1 other video that's over 1,000 views so far but these things take time) LOL! I don't make any money off these videos. I just enjoy it whenever someone else enjoys them. Not everything should be about money. I appreciate each and every one of you who comment here. Thank You!

I grew up in San Diego in the late 60"s and early 70"s always thought Los Angeles was the place to live seemed liked there was some unique about that city vs San Diego. I liked when we could get the stations tv and radio. This was when you could pick up TV stations from just an Ariel antenna it would come in clear it just made you want to be there because it was a happing place.

Bob Meadows I was raised in MI, but I spent a month in SoCal in August of ‘66 as a nineteen year old hitting the Orange County beaches and listening to 93 KHJ non-stop. Small planes used to pull huge advertising banners back and forth along the beaches all day long. The highlight of that trip was getting into The Whiskey on Sunset to see Johnny Rivers perform. Yup, they did have Go Go dancers in cages up above the floor. A year later I was almost done with my Army medic training and 2 months away from Nam. Time flies.

Bob Meadows, thank you for this awesome walk back in time to 93 KHJ Boss Radio. I remember these sound tracks like it was yesterday. Back in the 60's a friends father who worked in electronics gave me a commercial reel to reel recorder and hundreds of the large reels of tapes. I use to tape hundreds of hours of 93 KHJ Boss Radio. Of course these tapes are long gone. Wish I would have kept them. Thanks again. Sincerely, Jim

Thank You Jim. I loved making this video because I was reliving those days as a kid while I was researching and putting it all together. I kept going back and fixing things because I don't think I really wanted to be done with this project. I wanted to make sure that if any of the remaining Boss Jocks or Ron Jacobs were to see this, they would be happy with it and hopefully it would make them smile. I wish you still had those Reel to Reel tapes too. Would have loved to listen to them. Thanks again Jim!

Great music, excellent jocks, some of whom (Brink, Morgan) came thru Chicago for a few months but I think our winters convinced them to go back to the sunny climate on the coast. 🙂

I also remember listening to the Cassius Clay/Sonny Liston fight on it. KHJ beat the crap out of KRLA. Oh, …and yeah I bought the sound track for the ‘Hollywood’ movie a couple of weeks ago. 😄

So many memories for those of us that lived in the area. Sam Riddle was on 9th Street West, on the sister RKO station, Channel 9, every afternoon during the week. Scotty Brink was on the radio when I got home from school. How many of us remember the day that this Drake station hit the air? Had many great stations though, in those days! Thank you, Bob, for the tribute.

Thank you Bob for all the hard work and dedication you put into this video. KHJ was the best radio station of all time. We were living in Rosemead when I got my transistor radio in 1963.
I used to love watching the Groovy Show when I got home from school in the late
1960's. I can still picture Kam Nelson dancing to Magic Carpet Ride in 1968. When the
decade came to end there was a special KHJ Album titled "Sound of The Sixties". It
wasn't the best sound quality but the memories are priceless.
When I got first car in 1972, it only had AM radio which was just fine by me. Very fond
memories of listening to the Real Don Steel during the summer of 72. It seemed like
    a magical time.
Thanks for the wonderful journey back thru time.

Thank you Rick! You know what's amazing about what you said? I remember Kam Nelson dancing to Magic Carpet Ride AND Steppenwolf was my very first concert AND I also got my first car in 1972 AND to top it all off, I'm looking at my Sound of the Sixties album hanging on the wall of my office in an album frame as I'm typing this. Probably sounds like I'm making this up but I'm not. It's the truth. Were you born in 1956 too?

+Bob Meadows Hi Bob, I was born in 1954 but not at all surprised that we share so much in common. I could tell by your video that we both wanted to be just like the Boss Jocks when we grew up. It is also interesting that you mentioned Elvis Presley in 1956. One of my first music memories was hearing Elvis on my dads car radio when we were driving to Huntington Beach. Do you remember when Bolsa Chica State Beach was known as Tin Can Beach? I never forgot how how strange it looked with all the cans in the sand. I loved to go there in the early 1970's. My favorite spot was just before the bluff area. The perfect spot for a newbie surfer like me. No crowds and great parking on PCH. I bet you also remember when Kam Nelson was dancing to Suzi Q by CCR on the Groovy Show? The first concert I attended was at Anaheim Stadium on July 3, 1976. The Beach Boys were fantastic.

What a trip down memory lane. Born in 1953, AM radio was everything we had during a period of an incredible music explosion. Think about what evolved in music during that period - rock and roll, surfer music, British Invasion, Motown, psychadelic rock - all in a span of about 7 years. And KHJ was at the forefront of all of it. Thanks for the memories.

The radio is a character in the movie, similar to Wolfman Jack in American Graffiti except this time it was real radio, like what was done in the video game LA Noire. It's brilliant. I watched the movie last night and it's an excellent time piece, the way he captured the 60s was just perfection.

I was born in 1958 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York during the '60's and '70's, the heyday of AM radio. The radio stations I listened to was the WMCA Good Guys, and during the middle '60's to the early '70's, I listened to 77WABC. Both stations had great DJ's, but I was not exposed to other DJ's until I travelled to Los Angeles in June of 1988. By then, 93 KHJ was history, but, while driving in my rental car, I happened upon an FM station, KRTH, 101 on the FM channel. Lo and behold, they had most of the KHJ DJ's working there, so I was fortunate to hear The Real Don Steele, Charlie Tuna, Robert W. Morgan, "Morganizing" me in the morning. These DJ's had great personalities, and the jingles were superb. Made me wish I grew up in SoCal in the1960's.

    • @wedge4hire
      @wedge4hire 6 років тому

STEV1968 I have a similar story in reverse! I was born and raised in SoCal and loved 93KHJ, 1110KRLA, and,
in the early 70's, KHJ-FM101 which in 1973 became KRTH. In June 1981, I travelled on business to the east coast,
Princeton, NJ for a month, and thoroughly enjoyed the local radio stations. The personalities were excellent and many of the oldies were some I rarely or never heard back home! Radio was so entertaining back then, on both coast.
One more irony: you were born in '58 and travelled here in '88, I was born in '51 and travelled to NJ in '81!

I was born in Long Beach, December 1952, and grew up in Huntington Beach from 1960 to 1972. I graduated from Fountain Valley High in 1971. In 1972 I joined the Navy and life went on from there. I remember my friend and I sitting against his garage door with our transistor radios tuned to the same station, 93-KHJ. That was our stereo music. We also listened to KRLA and KFWB, before they became "all news, all the time." I remember the DJs at KFWB always saying "That was the KFWBeatles," or "That was the KFWBeach Boys." But, Boss Radio ranked #1. But, about that time I also discovered Underground FM like KLOS, KMET, and KNAC. I liked them all but KNAC, aka The Knack, was my favorite of the FM stations. Again, I thank you so very much for the great memories.

+Jude Serrano You didn't mention the other station you listened to. But you DID mention the BEST ONE! You know Jude, when my parents decided to move from Anaheim in 1972, we moved right next door to you. Corona. I finished high school at Corona High. Went to Riverside all the time to the Tyler Mall and Van Buren drive in for the swap meet. I remember when the Doobie Brothers started and Listen to the Music came out, my buddy and I drove to Tyler Mall to get their record.

Hey Bob, I dont remember the other stations name. All i can think of is KPRO. I was born in the city of Orange and we lived in Santa Ana til I was 4 when dads work moved from Anahiem to Van Buren South of the 91 Fwy. Near the drive in that was 1959. Before the big Tyler Mall I used to buy my records at Ghilette records done magnolia at the Brockton arcade. The owner had it setup so you could listen to an album on head phones before you bought. I think I bought my first CCR album " Born on the Bayou" I rode my bike home and listen to that album many times before i bought their first album. Do you rember the Licorice Pizza record store?

Every radio market back then had a #1 AM station, most were similar. 93 KHJ was the big one all the way into the mid '80s until "The Mighty 690" XETRA-AM came along. In the '60s and '70s in Wisconsin it was WOKY out of Milwaukee, it was huge and had a similar format.

@@BobMeadowsComedy I think you are right. It has a woman on the cover with Love spelled out on her mouth. Just an FYI, not sure exactly where you lived, but I used to listen to KFXM AM in San Bernadino too. While stationed in the service in England they used to have a Friday night rock show on BBC Radio 1. I heard this Dejay and could not make the connection until he said he used to DJ for a tiny station in San Bernadino. Amazing at least to me!
KHJ was my primary station from 1965 to 1969 when I left for the Navy for 20 years.

For me too, starting in 1964, when I was 9, and my family moved to Santa Ana, KHJ was also my favorite station, though, I don't recall these albums. Also listened to KFWB and KRLA, and had 2 compilation albums put out by the latter, KRLA's 21 Solid Rocks, and KRLA's Son of 21 Solid Rocks (In fact, I still have them). KHJ was the best, though. Thanks for the video.

So, I have dozens of Boss 30 charts from 1967-1972. I sent an email to Charlie Tuna years ago because he supported a children's hospital charity. I offered to give him the charts so perhaps he could sell them and then split the profits between his charity and my local children's hospital. I never heard back. Maybe they're only worth their sentimental value.
I listened to 93 KHJ until I was 12 and someone told me about FM stations (we lived in Saugus ,too far for over the air reception.) So I took the tip of the TV cable and touched it to the FM antenna, and my whole life changed.

direwolf58 You've probably seen Ray Radolph's Website 93 KHJ Boss Radio - A look back. His whole site is about those those Boss 30 surveys(charts). This is the link 93khj.blogspot.com/?m=0
I also wrote Charlie Tuna an E-mail before I published this video and he wrote me back. He was my favorite Boss Jock . In fact, when I swiched over to FM it was KKDJ, the station that Charlie was involved with which later became KIIS FM. I also lived in Saugus from 1980-1983. Those were some fun times back then.

I'm sad to say, radio legend Ron Jacobs passed away this morning. Best known for being co-creator of 93 KHJ Boss radio back in 1965, Jacobs was also a disc jockey, concert promoter, record producer and played a huge part in "The history of Hawaiian Radio". I was very fortunate to become friends with Ron over the phone when he contacted me after seeing my UA-cam video, "Growing up with the Boss Jocks". I loved hearing his stories and I am currently working on a video series called "The Ron Jacobs Story". Sadly now, Ron won't get to see the first video.(Actually he will still see it but I won't get to hear his comments) So thankful for the time (even though short) I got to talk with him. A sad day.
