Paul is from my hometown of Thunder Bay. My sister is a nurse and took care of Paul's dad before he passed away. Paul came to Thunder Bay to see his dad and as a thank you he gave my sister two tickets to the Late Show.
i thought the late show was free
@xgum it is but usually you have to wait quite a while after you apply for them.
These clever, somewhat hip and knowing, and innovative segments are what made Letterman so interesting and new. A lot of talk shows do similar things now but he was first.
I remember the fudge segment because I was up late studying for a huge scary midterm that night. Of course I don't remember a damn thing from the midterm or even the class, but I do remember "fudge". Thank you, brain.
@Frankie Larin We don't give a shit.
this show was at odds with my college education! i was always half asleep in my morning classes.
Thank you for uploading! Anton was the reason I started watching Dave when I was in my early teens way back in the mid/late 80's. These are so great. I have a ton of these on VHS somewhere...
Anton Fig… one of the best drummers Kiss had
Anton Zip
That was highly enjoyable - thanks for your efforts in compiling these!
The one with Regis was funny as hell, the band constantly mumbling like grumpy fellows makes me laugh a lot.
I always thought Regis was funny
When Dave's away, the band won't play.
Bill Wendle throwing the balled up paper at him.
Loved it when David Sanborn sat in with the band.
80’s era Letterman is THE best!!!
xoxo The Clarences
I love the band trashing the stage! Paul: "Leave it to me to overreact!" Hilarious!!!
i guess im randomly asking but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Otis Aldo Instablaster =)
The trashing clips are awesome. Thank you, sir!!!
I haven't found your viewer mail yet; I'll keep looking.
Don, appreciate all you are doing man. Huge Late Night fan, just didn't get a VCR until 2009, and by then, it was all to late.
Nice! They did some actual damage the second time around! 😂
love this! the trashing, regis! i miss being young!
I never knew David Letterman’s show was so edgy back then!
Regis was such a sweet guy.
I dont even watch any of the current late shows.Nothing like Paul and Dave back in the day just having fun.
Thanks, for this, Don.
I'd like to see an "Inky" collection (Tony Mendes)! There's one very funny incident where he's wearing an SNL jacket. Circa August 1996.
Thanks for all your great work!
These. Are. AWESOME.
..the guy walking into the picture at 12:23 and standing next to David Sanborn is legendary guitarist/composer/singer Dave Mason ! 😎
You are correct, sir!
These trashing the set moments were great. Very funny having Anton spray paint GE Sucks. Loved when the band could get into the act and wow our world is sadder without Viewer Mail....Didn't Dave call the fountain in front of the desk the Dancing Waters? I think he did...
They were originally called the Dancing Waters until a company that had copyrighted the name told the show to change the name. So they became the Prancing Fluids.
@@dongiller HAHAHAHAHAHA 🤣🤣🤣🤪
I cannot stop loving my guy Paul Shaffer when just break the place on Letterman 😂😆😂🤣
Paul he’s my favourite keyboard player
He is a freaking savage
R.I.P. Regis.
"When you come in here and tell jokes, everybody *listens* ." - Regis Philbin (9:50)
Thank you.
Regis Philbin always seemed to be a good sport for Dave and Co.'s shenanigans
As a Carolina native, I love that most of the letters are either from here or reference our states
Wow, this is interesting and captivating
The band trashing the set skits are hilarious. I wonder if they did it more than twice.
There's a Cold Open Intro to Repeat video where the band leave the studio wielding bats, but that's it. (I plan to eventually put together a collection of all of the repeat intros.)
Don, you are on fire. I don't know what you do for a living, but you must be good at it.
Ha! Honestly, just scraping by.
i would love to see compilations of all viewer mail and top 10 lists ever done. Those were my favorite segments. Small town news too.
Easy. There were only thousands of them.
@@dongiller ha !
Back when anyone could have a show... Good times!
Have you an Alan Kalter compilation? Remember him singing November Rain at the end of a bit and it was brilliant Kalter
Paul is too hip for himself
Great channel
Haha Sid wearing that yellow shirt in 2 different segments... He must have worn that one a lot, I always picture him in my mind with that one!
Watched all of these when they aired. What Dave did for late night... amazing times. THIS is the reason everyone thinks late night sucks these days (except Conan. Conan's the only one left).
3:24 Actually, the more I look at it..the more I like it. (King Crimson)
I do think it's good.
I carried it around with me for days and days.
Playing little games
Like not looking at it for a whole day
+Don Giller- When did they start using the gag of Paul leaving, then cutting to stock footage of a guy getting into a car that explodes? And I asked this already on a different video, but didn't Anton chow down on a bird in one segment?
Probably early 1989. And as I answered in the different video, here's Anton's bird segment plus followup -- ua-cam.com/video/uvcM5tUNlWM/v-deo.html
You are the man sir! Sorry for all the different replies on these videos. For one thing, I'm not getting all the notifications from UA-cam when you reply. Also, I'm just so excited to see all these videos I'm afraid I'm getting overloaded! Hope it's not to irritating for you. You are doing an absolutely incredible job with these videos!
"Let's trash this dump!" - Gets me every time. :P
Will Lee called Regis Philbin PHIL.
i like the one where anton figg is crowned by a lizard alien
8:52 cracks me up
Do you have the viewer mail where the question is: "When Paul and the band are playing 'You Really Got Me' are they thinking of the Kinks or Van Halen?"
They start playing the song.
Sid plays and imagines the Kinks.
Will plays and imagines Van Halen.
Paul plays and imagines sneaking behind Dave's desk strangling Dave to death and the show is renamed "Late Night with Paul Shaffer." 😅
That’s here - ua-cam.com/video/_xAxBdvPPAE/v-deo.html
*The video ends before we see if Anton got a rice krispie square. It feels incomplete... I mean, c'mon.*
🤣
Blame not the video but the broadcast.
damn I really want some fudge now
Anton was a KISS drummer. Did you know that?????????????
Yes.
I believe David Sanborn was in one of the clips, not just Sid, Will, Paul or Anton.
Yup, with Dave Mason. Sanborn was by that point there nearly every end of the week, be it Thursday or, when the scheduled changed in mid-'87, Friday.
Yeah, since Carson was in control of the show he wouldn't allow Paul to have a full band with horns but was fine having guests sit in. This is also why you almost never see a full band perform on Letterman as this was Carson's doing as well.
Yes, Carson had a lot of pull. When he also shot down NBC's proposal for a new Steve Allen show that would've followed "The Tonight Show", Dave- the biggest Steve Allen fan there ever was- got that time slot instead.
Pretty sure LNwDL was a Carson Production so not just pull but owned the thing.
Indeed so but I'm talking about before there even was a 'Late Night with...' program, Carson blocked the creation of another proposed show.
Sid McGinnis is my style icon.
What if Hiram wore shoes?
rip regis
great stuff. was hoping to see the mail asking if the band thinks about the Kinks or Van Halen when playing “you really got me”. please upload if you have it.
September 25, 1987. On it.
Don Giller 👍🙏
It's up -- ua-cam.com/video/_xAxBdvPPAE/v-deo.html
Looking for the one where Paul shoots David Sanborn
Anymore clips of the WDB shenannagans(sp)?
I'll post them when I'm there.
Don Giller - thank you so much again from New Zealand for your wonderful uploads, I'm totally laughing my ass off seeing all these for the first time.
Thanks, Nicholas! It's great sharing them, especially for folks like you who never saw Dave's Late Nights.
My God the joke was that Sultans of Swing was less than 20 years old! 😱😳👴👴
What are those discs in front of his desk?
The Dancing Waters, later called the Prancing Fluids. A compilation may be forthcoming.
@@dongiller Those are fountains? Thank you, I could never figure that out.
rice krispie squares!
Paul he’s a funny keyboardist he makes me laugh so hard when I’m watching him destroy the show
Him as in the head representative for the rest of the band huh ?
9:15 MY PILLOW guy????!!!
Bill Wendel
I miss how loose the format was back then
Bribery at it's finest LOL. Get them with Fudge!
do you have the one where drummer Steve Jordan walks off the show because of a racist comment from Dave?
January 15, 1986. It wasn't as seriously taken as perceived. If time permits, I'll put it up tonight.
@@dongiller was it serious at ALL ????? 😕🤨
Fudge
I'm Saying let's trash this dump! LOL!!!
I'm saying .. Let's TRRRRASH THIS DUMP!
😀🤪😆
You’re getting out of line Paul
Spray Painting GE SUCKS hahahah
