I’ve actually asked the “what language do deaf people think in?” to my ASL teacher. His answer was essentially “Do you know that concept thought that you have in your brain before you translate it into language? That’s basically it. You think in concepts, not languages. And then you go ahead and sign that concept thought directly instead of making a long sentence like spoken languages usually do.”
He also says that he can depend on a number of factors, including if you were born deaf, or if you became deaf after learning language. But they try to teach you to thinking concepts before language when you’re signing.
Hopefully that makes sense, because it was a really interesting answer
Thank you for sharing that!
I've also heard that deaf people also can think in sign language
Some people (even hearing ppl) don’t have an inner monologue so I always assumed that was how they thought
I also assumed it was in concepts as well, especially for people who speak or understand multiple languages. As I am able to understand more than one language, I understand what you mean by thinking in concepts.

Watching this made me realize just how crappy my childhood really was.
“You look back on things with nostalgia…”
I don’t, I look back on my life with disgust at everything that happened.
“Start life again at 6 with everything you know now or 10 million dollars?”
I immediately thought, “10 million dollars. I doubt I could be paid enough to endure all of that again.”
(For context, I was abused, neglected, in the foster care system, and a lot of other stuff.)
Same, really hated how fools treated me and my sister, she even said that when I was young (young enough that I don't remember) I was molested, some people stole all our good clothes, and even broke my sister's DS charger so she couldn't play it for years, along with some fools telling her that men don't cry (she's trans but didn't know it at the time, and made her feel bad). I remember one of them throwing me into an active fan on the ceiling, I was crying for him to stop, but he didn't, i wasn't hurt, but I still can't forget that. Some one even cut my hair without my consent because it was"too manly" (I like my hair long and am non binary, but was "male" at birth). Sorry for trauma dumping, just needed a place to get this off my chest.
Take care

As a German I can confirm, that you can legally drink with 14. If your Parents approve and are watching.
With 16 you can drink Beer and Wine.
Pathetic, here in the UK you can drink from the age of 5 if your parents approve.

That's probably not a good thing
Yku can already drink at 0 though. The only thing that is needed is the parents approval. How else do you think did Amthor end up like that?
actually you can drink at any age in Germany... the 14 is just for public locations. As far as I am aware, there is no law, that forbids your children to drink in your own home. Though the parents should obviously set boundaries on their own, or they might be fined for negligence.
As a fellow German I agree
Imagining little kids who are angry drunks 😆
"Timmy, w-where arrrr ya-OH HI! Right, ‘kay-No, I’m (hiccup) m’good-jusht-HOLD MY BEER!"
A kid asked me, if I was already an adult. Told him I was 18 (at that time), so legally, yes(of course explained it better for his age). Follow up questions: "Are you a mom?" "Have you ever tasted alcohol? Are you drunk rn?" "Why don't you have kids? Do you have a husband? Do you want kids?" I really ... love ... children...
The reason the resume gap is a problem for me: I was a stay at home mom for 20 years and now it’s impossible to get a job because employers don’t count any household experience despite all the skills it actually takes.

@@RyanBlackhawke exactly! It's frustrating to say the least.
Fun fact; deaf people could hear originally think in their native language, however if you are born deaf, you don’t technically have an inner monologue, instead they think in their local sign language.
That is interesting. Am I correct to assume babies and toddlers would have neither enough vocabulary nor memories to engage in "vocal" inner dialogues? What happens if someone loses their hearing around ages 5 - 7? Is it a mix of vocal & sign? Does sign language become dominant after a couple of decades? Do they forget the memory of sounds?
Argh, you trickster, you sent me down a rabbit hole of questions that create more questions 😝
@Bethsabée Sheba Newrose I think it really depends on if they remember being able to hear- I had a Deaf ASL teacher who went Deaf around age 1 but doesn't remember any of it so he doesn't know any sounds and so he thinks in text and "silent films" (as he phrased it). If they were able to speak before going Deaf then they would likely still have a spoken "inner monologue" however I'm sure if they go Deaf young it's entirely possible to think in a combination of spoken word and sign! It varies from person to person :]
I'd honestly think that if a person that has to think in sign language would have a rather vivid imagination as they picture all the signing from their inner monologue. May not be true at all but it's an interesting thing to think about.
@@dragonsteamworks6675 They probably picture the movements, not their actual hands. Do you imagine the voice in your head having a mouth?
Interesting… actually that’s helpful for my newest writing endeavor. I’m doing a magical girl story and I tried to make the cast a mix of races and some disabilities. The archer is in a wheelchair, the magic wand user is autistic, there’s a Hindu girl and Sikh girl and they fall in love. The Jewish girl is mute and hard of hearing. So knowing that her inner monologue would be verbal helps me to write her better when there are chapters and scenes focusing on her thoughts and feelings. I want to try to be inclusive with these girls and to write them as realistically as possible.

I asked my deaf boyfriend in high school about this, as he was born deaf. He told me he thinks in actions, not words. Like he sees in his head what he is thinking, instead of hearing it. He had no idea that hearing people think with a voice.
Y'know that makes sense. Thoughts can be either words or images depending on circumstance so an absence of knowledge of words would reasonably be compensated for by stronger visualization.
Having been born with fluctuating hearing, I think with a mix of both words and visuals.
My sister is deaf and she thinks in sign language. She was born deaf.
Well, not everyone who can hear thinks with a voice either. The split is actually around 50 50 between people who have an internal monologue and people who don't.

I used to volunteer with a deaf-blind teenager. She was completely deaf from birth and learned to sign, then went totally blind as a young child. When she was thinking, she would physically sign "out loud." You could literally SEE her inner monologue.
Wild!
So, do they use Braille to communicate? I meant no offense, just wanna ask if they are OK? How are they coping to those changes ?
@@theconstellationofboredom8635 Go look up Helen Keller, the most famous Deaf-Blind person in history. She was initially let run wild because they couldn't figure out how to communicate with her, but then Annie Sullivan was brought on to try to do something with her, and tried to teach her to talk via a modified finger-spelling. At first, Helen was just too wild to take lessons, but then Annie realized that her parents coddling her was making it so she didn't *have* to adapt, so Annie brought Helen to a special house where Helen could no longer ignore Annie because Annie was the only person to interact with.
And then one day, Annie was holding Helen's hand under pouring water and signing "W-A-T-E-R" to her and something in Helen's brain clicked. She fumblingly spelt back "W-A-T-E-R" and Annie signed it back to her and suddenly Helen understood LANGUAGE. And she started asking for the names for everything she could possibly point to. She was about seven at the time. (I just looked it up to find out how old, and apparently Helen did have about 60 "home signs" to communicate with family before Annie entered her life, but it was still Annie who brought her into the wider world of communication, and that WATER moment was life-changing for her.)
And thanks to Annie's intervention, Helen was able to grow up to become an author and lecturer and a disability rights advocate. It's incredible the gulf between what a severely disabled person actually can accomplish compared to the small amount that people might *think* they can accomplish ("if I were deaf and blind, my life would be over").
And of course, in the modern world, there are a wealth of possible options for communication, including screen readers and devices that make Braille dots raise up for people to feel; go watch the movie *Sneakers* for an example of a guy using such a device to read and write code.
Note Also: Thanks to examples of feral children, we know that had Helen not been given that early intervention, not figured out language during the critical period of her development, she would have forever lacked a functional language, and been limited to those rudimentary signs -- there's a point beyond which you can never acquire language because your brain is no longer in a state to pick one up without comparing it to an existing one.
@@Arkylie Oh, wow! Thanks, this is golden!
Do she use morse to communicate? Just curious

From all the interviews with Deaf individuals it depends on when they became deaf... from having an inner monologe of what they remember as voices to no voices but images.
As someone who studied translatorics, it's because language and meaning are seperate. You can think in concepts (images, sounds, symbols - letters, emotions etc.). And before anyone attacks my spelling, I studied German-Polish translation.
I can't hear this comment.
Yeah, I've had discussions with friends and family about their inner monologue/how they think, and in general, it seems some people have the inner voice and some don't, which usually means it's more visual/conceptual instead, I guess? Me and my sister actually talked about this to our parents and they looked super worried about me and her "having voices in our heads" :'D Apparently they just don't have the inner monologue? They're both hearing people.
Also, my inner monologue switches languages according to which language I've used more, that day :D
Yup, even if early deaf people usually state that they "see" sign language in their mind or have this kind of silent perception of their thoughts.
This also looks to be very common in ASD and even neurotypical individuals with no hearing impairment can actually experience a "visual" inner speech as their main form of inner speech.
More over, inner speech develops from self talk (that usually stems from caregiver-baby interactions) and looks like deaf kiddos whose first language is sign language actually talk to themselves signing... and of course, a lot of people that work with them mistakes their self-talk as some sign of psychosis or other mental disorders.
Comments like this actually help me write more realistic characters. I’m doing a magical girl story were the girls are of of different races, ethnicities, religions, and some have disabilities. One of them is a mute and hard of hearing Jewish girl and when I saw that meme I wondered how she would have an inner monologue.

I have CVI, or central visual impairment. A Literal brain damage. Makes interpreting visuals incredibly difficult. I can't recognize people pretty much ever.
This is Exactly what I should say. 😂😅
Sign language student here. Deaf people don't usually think in words and sentences, they think in pictures and scenes. Sign language is a three dimensional language in which you literally create a three dimensional picture to tell a story (e.g. a story about visiting your family, the family is placed on either the left or right side and you visit them in that direction and go home in the other, whereas in spoken languages that would just be one linear sentence). Since building pictures and thinking in pictures is such a key part of deaf communication, I have been told by my deaf teachers that they also dream in pictures and scenes.
Awesome answer! Thank you!
Gotta say Click, you were smarter about a potential career in music than I was. I spent four semesters as Music Ed. major in college before realizing I did not want to make music work. It's one reason I advise those who aren't really certain what they want to do to take a lot of different electives those first two years, if they can, to figure out what they want to make money at.
So because I mostly game at night in a very small apartment, I've learned how to quietly rage

A friend of mine used the pronoun "she" to refer to literally everyone and everything.
They'd been doing this since the 80's withou a problem just fine.
Christmas 2022 one of their relatives was FTM and you could see where this is going.
It had become such a habit they literally couldn't turn it off and just broke down crying.
A little odd that she did it, but it was clearly a deep-set habit by then and she had no ill-will, I'm sure, or she wouldn't have been so upset about continuing to do it.
Tbh, if I was the FTM friend, I wouldn't mind simply because it wasn't just me, she was literally doing it to everyone and everything, why should that friend be any different?
I'd think it would be even more upsetting to be treated so blatantly differently, excluded from this thing she does to everyone and everything - which includes other men - just because 'I'm trans'
same thing for me, i used to refer to a lot of things and people as he, little did i know i was a little egg. Im glad im attempting to change my use of pronouns to they more often, especially when a majority of my friends a enby and go by they/them.

That's both terrifying and really interesting. I hope they're doing better now

To be fair, the towers in Chess, which are usually called Rooks, are a misinterpretation of chariots, which were called "rukh" in Persian.
Also fully agree with your point about turning a hobby into a job. Attempting to do graphic design as a full time job COMPLETELY killed my desire to and pleasure in creating art. It took YEARS for my creativity to recover. Now I'm v firm about having hobbies being fine and good everytime a family member tries to convince me to monetise a skill i have.
Still, monetizing a skill doesn`t have to mean you make it into a full job. Could just be on the line of putting up your arts that you do anyway for sale.
@@Notmyname1593 That's what I do nowadays a lot of the time tbh. But the moment I find myself dreading doing that i pull back.

Art is a hobby, practice makes you better. You Can have a talent for it.
Have hobbies, make an art out of your career.
I agree, for me it was not only about turning a hobby into my major at university. I was forced to study it instead of just reading about it out of curiosity. It killed most of my interest in it. But now a few years later I feel like I've regained some of it

I actually did some research on the woman caring for wildlife back when it first went down. If I'm remembering correctly, she wasn't taking care of them right and raising these wild animals as pets, instead of taking plans to rehab and release them. They were too habituated to humans. If the animals think humans aren't dangerous, it can lead to them getting further injured and killed by humans (accidentally or otherwise), or the animal being noted as a nuisance and put down anyway.
Killing them definitely still feels like the wrong thing to do instead of giving them to wildlife sanctuaries though.
I had to chat with a buddy of mine who later found out that no other rehabs had room for the animals, and some animals it was deemed better for their health to put down anyway.

The Greenland -Iceland thing: If I remember correctly, it basically was "advertising" campaign from the vikings to other vikings to settle down in Greenland by calling it being green. And thus create the assumption that the land is warm enough.
I was told that too in 6th grade history.
The 0 in Japanese is probably so complex because the concept of 0 is relatively new and I think predates most of the language, whereas Arabic/Indian numerals are much newer, and were probably created partly based on the the concept
I was thinking that character literally translates to something like “nothingness” but I’m too lazy to actually look it up
That's very much likely the case, that 0 as a concept didn't exist when Japanese and Chinese started as a language.
As a side-effect of it, their character for ten, a hundreds and a thousand are singular and don't use 0.
I thought it was Chinese lmao, but ig they are the same in this context
Might also be because I’m from China myself
Thank you for making my afternoons working from home so much more enjoyable ❤
2:06 Fun fact: Shrimps are actually "backwards". While vertebrates have the intestines in front, they have them in the back. That happened when our lineages split.
The "draw me like one of your French girls" meme was a joke taken from a French & Saunders parody sketch they did of Titanic back in the late 90s. French and Saunders being a long running and very popular UK sketch comedy series, written by and starring Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Jennifer Saunders played Rose (for this the young or American readers, Jennifer Saunders was the voice of the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2) and Dawn French (again...for reference, she was the Gryfendor common room door painting in PoA), was Jack. The joke was that as Saunders reclined on the chaise in a hilarious pair of plastic comedy breasts, French nervously sketched thoughout a montage, only to reveal that the finished drawing was just that stick figure.
18:44 Acording to this book I'm reading:
Iceland: Crow-Floki went to a place previously visited by one Naddod (who named it Land of Snow out of spite to a snowstorm he had to cross), and even before that by some Gardar (who made an state there called Gardarsholm). Once there, Floki and his people found a nice warm coast and made a settlement there, with the intention of stay there for a couple years. However, once the fall came, tempeture dropped like crazy and killed all the cattle. Barely surviving the winter, they tried to get back to Norway but were impeded by several storms, and had to stay longer. Eventually, Crow-Floki returned to Norway and he told everyone he could about the place where he was the last couple years, which he named the Land of Ice out of spite (like Naddod before him). That is, it was supposed to be a derogative name because he was really pissed of the sudden cold that killed all his cattle and made him miserable for several months.
Greenland: Fast forward to when Iceland was already colonized and relatively full of people. The best lands were already taken. Erik the Red, due to several unfortunate circumstances, ill decided to kill his neighbor and raid his farm; for which he was exiled for 3 years. During his exile, Erik found a land full of snow, went down south and found a warmer coast. He thought it was a really good place to make a new settlement, seeing how most of Iceland was already taken, so when he returned from his exile he wanted to go back with more men to make a good settlement. In order to sell the idea of "greener pastures" to his fellow folks, he called it Greenland. And it worked, but they sadly came to realize it wasn't that green and why it was abandoned even before they came.
In brief: Greenland was the scam, mainly to promote colonization, but Iceland was more a derogative name than something to be taken literaly.

Just in case somebody attempts click’s advice about owning up to being wrong. If the people you are communicating with are reasonable people, they will respect you more for it. However there are those who will take that perceived “victory” and never make you forget. Going out of their way to make the moment as humiliating as possible. I’m speaking from experience. If you are around these types of people, please get away from them if you can. They are not good for your self esteem or growth.
Admitting youre wrong is a sign on intelligence and self-esteem. I know I dont know everything and Im totally zen with it, but eternally curious.
@@janemiettinen5176 Yes! It truly is. What I am trying to accomplish with my comment is to shed light on the darker side of working towards that goal of being a better version of yourself. In the mainstream people often simply say “love yourself” or other very loose, open ended points. It is rarely talked about just how much of an uphill climb it actually is to get out of a shitty mindset and environment. I find it essential to let people know what to expect so that they are not discouraged as soon as they meet an obstacle as common as this.

Fun fact about the messed up sign for the college (if I remember it right, anyway): The C was put on the bricks somewhat-intentionally! The words were on the bridge for the campus, and a renovation took place that ended where the C was. When the renovation crew asked the dean if they should fix it, he said No and told them to stick it to the wall since it would be funny.
They had another renovation since then, so it's fixed now, but I love the sign being that way.
I figured. It felt too ironic for it to not be a joke from the college itself.
OH! Are you talking about that one building at Utah State University with the C on the wall because they didn't have enough room? Me and my parents laughed so hard at that
Edit: now I remember exactly why we found it so funny, to have such a blatant planning and construction error on the ARCHITECTURE building was just so darn hilarious. Looking back it makes sense it was deliberate.
On reliving life from 6 with my current knowledge: I know so much more about myself and relationships. If I went back to six, I know I would make a whole bunch of different friendship/ related choices. Like just be more confident in general, but also maybe try to be more relatable/less superior. And ditch crappy friends immediately. And tell people I liked them sooner. And try to do more things I was afraid of…. But until that tech is available, I’ll take the $10m….
32:23 There was a '90s movie that did this -- Angel has a tattoo of her name, spelled ANGLE. Someone points out the pronunciation difference, she just sighs, "I know that NOW."
For the pet carriers for cats, i recommend ones for medium sized dogs for cats, it gives them more room to move aroud and get comfortable and if you have a big cat, it can handle the weight.
As someone who's had a variety of pets over a long period of time, I'd add that an extra-sized carrier is especially good if the animal has some sort of cast or splint, or w/e, or if they don't feel well. Not only do they have more room to get as comfortable as possible, but if they're...sick...in any way, they can stay away from it. For animals who like a tighter space, a towel can be added.
Can confirm
Seconded!
