    I have been lifting since I was 16 and I am 33. I took about 4 years off because I was strung out on heroin. I have been back in the gym about 8 months and I am the strongest I have ever been now because of learning from Mark and his methods. I have a 405 bench low 6 deadlift, high 4 squat, and a 265lb ohp at 2019lbs. I had never benched over 365 or deadlifted over 5 before learning the ss method. Some of my gains were muscle memory from being somewhat strong before but would never hit the numbers I do now without SS. Thank you Mark you are awsome!! SS probably saved my life don't know if I would still be sober without my training.

    Summary:
    Acknowledge that aesthetics are mostly genetic. (mostly, there's still room for improvement though)
    Most media influencers and actors and models are using some form of steroids (strapping gear).
    Focus on lifting heavier Deadlifts, Overhead Presses and Rows for a more buff physique.
    Minicuts (done after Bulking) can't be done for longer than 3 months, after 3 you'd start to lose too much of the strength and the built up hypertrophy (you'll always lose some strength when you cut, but it becomes more than marginal after 3 months)
    Protein is more satiating than carbs.
    During the minicut, you wanna be eating:
    250 g protein
    300 g carb
    50 g fat
    Without enough carbs, recovery from training is much slower and thus gains are slower.
    White meat isn't superior to Red meat how people used to believe back in the '80s
    Lean Red meat is the best during the minicut.

    1:01:01 I think they missed the fact that once your blood sugar drops to a certain point it triggers hunger hormone "ghrelin". And that when insulin spikes fat burning turns off completely. So eating fat, and protein without carbs burns more body fat as it keeps insulin low. He is correct in saying eating carbs and fat together are a problem. And earlier in the video he mention Marlon Brando saying actresses would "not eat" to lose weight for a role. It's called fasting and its completely safe as long as you have fat to loose.

    • @Jmack7861
      @Jmack7861 4 роки тому

      This is only an acute effect because EVERY macro eventually turns into sugar (other than amino acids being used for repair, the excess aminos do turn to glycogen then sugar though) which is what your body runs off of. Glycogen and ketones both turn into sugar and insulin keeps them from jumping too high. Granted when eating straight carbs your sugar will shoot up and you’ll have more of a spine then crash, but even if you’re on a keto diet if the calories are the same and fats are substituted in for the carbs you were eating then the constant low level excretion of insulin would be the same at the end of the day. I think people focus too much on insulin, IGF-1, and controlling grhelin when not introducing any exogenous insulin or growth hormone into the body

If you have full biceps and triceps, that alone makes people think you look large. Take Robert for example: He has very unimpressive arms, no veins, no cuts, soft looking and probably 16 inchs or under. Because of this looking at him as he is, he has a "Do you even lift look" Arms is where it's at really.

      I also have a friend who is like your step brother. My mate, isn't very strong, in fact i'm MUCH stronger, yet because of his genetics, he has really large arms, and good fat distribution. SO even though he isn't actually large, he does look very good because of proportions.

      @@Jk-zv6tz We are visual creatures. We see and we perceive. The game does change in person though. Virtually every untrained person that I meet recognizes that I train without me saying a word. People following the fitness industry have different expectations than the average joe. Last time I cut real low I had two in person male clients with a baseline dad bod. They both saw what I had to go through to go from 15-17% to 11-13% and they both agreed that how I looked at 15-17% was more than plenty for their goals and I looked not much leaner than I look now. Untrained females also have told me that me getting any bigger than I am now is "too big." So I think consumers of fitness equipment are not necessarily representative of what lies in the middle of the bell curve. Most untrained adult males over 30 have dad bods and have little interest in looking like a fitness model and most untrained females are not interested in a man who is leaner than they are.

    SS works, much stronger after LP and Texas Method. Stronger than I'd ever been... body fat rose from 10% to 15%. No one would've called me "fat". I looked good in clothes and not bad "nekked". However, for the first time in my life my cholesterol numbers increased quite a lot. And frankly, I hated how that extra layer of fat felt and looked as my waist went from 32" to 35". I cut back on the food and changed my training to include more conditioning. Leaner and feel better now. Lost some strength...about 20% off my peak squat and DL. It was worth it.

      Ok, per some research, Bronson's height was officially 5' 7" but standing in comparison to other known height guys, it was probably close to 5'9". His weight, including muscle to bone ratio needs to be adjusted, making him more of a maxed out ectomorph than a natural mesomorph, especially in his later years. In his debut movies, House of Wax and The Sandpiper, he definitely packed on more muscle. He might of done some anabolic juicing, to maintain his physique, but if so it was in the low dosages. He apparently did lift iron, in addition to his boxing and karate training.

    Quick note. If you do what I call "wussy" low carb, performance will suffer. Ketogenic diets are dogshit for performance. BUT if you eat at least 12 WHOLE eggs a day, a pound or 2 of red meat, and maybe some vegetables cooked in butter, performance won't suffer and you will feel better than you have in a LONG time. Plus, the anti-inflammatory properties of the diet are awesome, you just aren't sore anymore. And my tendonitis that I suffered with for 18 months just disappeared one day, and never came back.

    So Santana says, disparagingly, that he tried a volume based arm routine and saw visible gains in ONE MONTH and concludes that was a failure. Am I the only person to find that to be an odd conclusion from an experienced trainer?
    And is it REALLY true that in order to be a bodybuilder you have to be normally "walking around" with 13% body fat? As if that statement actually means anything?

    • @Whitefang8128
      @Whitefang8128 5 років тому +6

      I think he was speaking more along the lines of return on investment. Doing sixty sets on one muscle group every single day for such a small return just wasn't worth it to him.
      And yes, to be a competitive bodybuilder you probably do have to be naturally lean (and have great insertions, and great response to the drugs, and great proportions, etc.). It's the same for every "sport" though. The guys at the top definitely do train hard but they /also/ have the top genetics. How could it be any other way?

    • @fabioq6916
      @fabioq6916 5 років тому

      @@Whitefang8128 Again, it depends or is nuanced. Depending on your stage of training, greater volume may be PRECISELY what you need to continue a stimulus. The fact remains that a visible improvement in muscle size in one month is NOT a failed programme. You are making a better argument for him, but that is NOT the argument he made.
      And yes, to be a competitive body builder you need genetics. No doubt about that at all. But I have "walked around" at lower than 13% body fat for years (admittedly while an athlete in my early twenties) and I do not have what you might call "body building genetics". The point is, Rip demands 100% focus and dedication to maximising 1 RM. If anyone applied the SAME dedication to developing a lean physique the can do it. It is a matter of dedication and discipline the variance of which is decided by genetics. Rip just makes it sound like only freaks can get abs. That's manifest bullshit.

    Per calorie fat is objectively not more satiating than carbs. It's just not what the studies show. Using ultra processed carbs isn't really fair. No one says that those are satiating or healthy. That doesn't mean that, in the context of an entire diet, cutting carbs does not curb hunger more. But it's not because fat in itself is satiating.
    Whether cutting carbs or cutting fats work better usually depends on how the diet is structured. I've done a fat loss phase in both styles and wasn't more hungry woth low fat. It was kind of a hassle though, a lot of chewing. You have to eat tons of veggies, fuits and actual whole grain products. Also, things like egg whites taste like crap.

    This nutrition advice contradicts the advice in the blue book recommending a lower carb diet for fat people. Might want to revise in the next edition. Also, I recommend the next edition focus more on how to perform the lifts and less on theory of the mechanics behind the lifts. Your last book was great for a coach, but too complicated for a trainee. Also, I would tailor the next book to your clients: Many (if not most) people who do starting strength are not athletes, start the program fat, and are older and sedentary. Yet much of your nutrition advice in the book (and in earlier podcasts) focus on skinny, young, athletes. Thus, the focus of your calorie recommendation advice should target the former segment of the market more than the latter. Also, need to quit overemphasizing hip drive, which is less important than teaching people to squat with mid pressure balance over the foot on the descent and ascent. The hip drive is sort of the icing on the cake and shouldn't be overdone. Also, it is beneficial to slow down the progression when technique breakdown starts occurring, rather than racing to put weight on the bar and then deloading when form issues become too significant. There is more but I dont have time to explain. You could get offended about my advice or you could use it constructively to improve your program. Your choice.

    To be fair, with regards to male body fat percentages, there is an "ideal" when it comes to health. That "ideal" range goes from 10%-15% bodyfat. 10% is the lowest end because anything below that and your growth hormone levels definitely starts dropping, and 15% being the higher number because above 15% can result in decreased insulin sensitivity.

      It’s 10-20%, but most people who are 20% think they’re 15%. Growth hormone is actually stimulated by ghrelin - the hunger hormone. Hgh & insulin are counter regulatory, meaning an increase in one results in a decrease or inhibition of the other. Other hormones are negatively effected by calorie restriction, but growth hormone is actually increased.

    I have heard through the grapevine that grown women are interested in a man's wallet. They care not about a man's abdominals at all. In fact, you could waddle around like an obese pig that's been fed corn steadily for a whole year and if you meanwhile have a well-stocked wallet and shiny-looking newish fast car, you will do just fine with women. I'm not saying all women, but I'm saying ... a lot of women. The defining factor here being the actual contents of the wallet and the stuff it produces, like the car, the house, the vacations, the jewelry, dinner parties... Bigger wallet = more options among women (in general).
    If you are somehow obsessed with your abs, as a man, and you don't earn a lot of dough doing so (like top-tier Mr. Olympia contenders), this obsession will usually only drain you of money, despite what you might think, for example that having (visible) abs means you don't spend much on food. Well, the common denominator with these vain, self-obsessed ab boys is that they spend all day and half the night (or vice versa) admiring themselves like Narcissus in a nearby mirror or camera or webcam, also injecting themselves with chemicals. That is not a sustainable business model, I think. I could be totally wrong; this ab world is not known to me. I do know quite a few women make a decent living posing like that (I have heard through the grapevine), but I know for a fact most women don't age well or gracefully, either. They age rather fast and that dwindles your model options, especially if you live by way of showing off your vacuous and superficial qualities like those women. Then again, I digressed: those women are not really about abs. It's the fitness girls that are. They are always in a bikini or something sporty and make selfies of their butt all day and night, posting the results on Instagram.
    Most women for sure aren't into abs on their own body. If they do, it will quite possibly lead to anorexia. It is unnatural for most women to have visible abs. If she does, she will not be interested in having children, or cannot, and most probably she is taking some other pills, next the ones that keep unwanted babies out her womb, despite riding miles of various cocks.
    In a sane world, visible abs are a sign of starvation. I haven't heard of the inmates of a Nazi concentation camp comparing each other's sixpacks. I quess he with the eightpack won the top bunk, right?
    Well, it is a strange world for sure. This whole ab thing reminds me of that scientific experiment on mice, where eventually the mice stopped being interested in social interactions and only cared for themselves, endlessly grooming their furry bodies and being generally lazy but content, squeaking happily. There must be genetic overlap between mice and men. Let's ask John Steinbeck.

    "...let's not forget, that the deadlift and the press build bigger abs too..."
    Yes they do, and the humble bodyweight chin up, or weighted chin up involves the abs a lot too, and people would know it if they ever tried them.
    Most LIFTERS cannot lift their own bodyweight from a dead stop at the bottom up to clear their chin over the bar, even with all that kicking and moving around shit they do in crossfire, they might TOUCH the bar with their chin but they don't CLEAR the bar. Doing three simple sets of all you can do at the end of the workout is all it takes. FROM THE BOTTOM arms fully extended and starting ascent without kicking or moving the knees to the from of the stomach. If that is not possible at least LOWER your fat self slowly for as many as you can.
    It is good to note this carefully, That the ONLY thing that MIGHT "overcome" your genetics is the weight on the bar going up, whatever greatness there might be in you, it will show up or come up if the weight goes up, and the weight will stop going up if you don't ALWAYS concentrate on improving your technique. Muscle just doesn't grow willingly, it has to be FORCED to grow.
