Awesome video! Super informative and detailed breakdown of the Aqara U300 - definitely helped me understand all the features before making a decision. Love how you explained the different unlocking options and the reversible lever design! Quick question though: How does the auto-lock feature perform in day-to-day use, and is there any chance they'll add more customization for lock times in future updates? Also, how well does it integrate with other smart home platforms like Alexa and Google compared to Apple Home? By the way, where did you get the mount for the M3 hub? Looks really neat!
Thank you! I’m glad you found it helpful. There are two main settings to note: First, "Normal" mode, which automatically locks the door a few seconds after it’s unlocked. Then there’s "Passage" mode, which keeps the lock unlocked (once authenciated) until you manually disable it using the button, the app, or an automation. One limitation to keep in mind: when Passage mode is enabled, there’s no way to lock the door from the outside. You'll need to disable Passage mode from the inside (app or automation.) There's no way to make it more "key-like," where you unlock it once, and it stays unlocked until you leave and lock it from the outside. Then the next time you arrive, you unlock it, and it stays unlocked until you lock it again. If you don't enable Passage mode the second time (with authentication), it will lock automatically after a few seconds after. Thus you'll have to re-enable Passage mode every time with the authentication. (a small inconvenience) I dive deeper into these settings in the video at ua-cam.com/video/0Oi1BzPohrc/v-deo.htmlsi=XRaWnFMf3Yd62SqY&t=296
@@ModernDayTechso can it stay in passage mode indefinitely until manually disabled if you don’t care about being able to lock the door from the outside?
Great video, do you know if you can set up more the one extra lock to automatically unlock? For example I have a breezeway with one regular lock on inside door and a regular lock and deadbolt on outside door. Of If I unlock the first one can I set up an automation to unlock the other two automatically?
Thanks for the review on the lock! Bummed that Silver Color isn't available at launch though, but appreciate the heads up that it's coming. Gonna wait till Silver is available, really been looking forward to this lock!!!
Two VERY different locks: a deadbolt and a latch. Beware of the required size of the boreholes. I believe every exterior door should have a deadbolt in addition to a latch, as latches can be easily opened with a credit card. However, the fingerprint feature on the U300 is the fastest way to unlock and open the door.
The passage mode behavior shown at 5m25s might be a deal breaker. It’s not clear if the lock can be left in passage mode (unlocked) and stays unlocked. This video mentioned something about pressing the button on the inside and then authenticating with your thumb. I don’t get it unless there is no way to disable the auto lock? I’m going to be using this on a bedroom door and it will remain unlocked most of the time. (Aka passage). Can you easily lock the door from the inside at least? Again think bedroom usage. Jump to 5m22s
Once passage mode is enabled via the inside button and authenticated, as seen at 05:22 and 05:51 It will remain in passage mode for however long you have it set in the app. So yes, you can keep it in passage mode until you choose to lock it. What I did at 05:22 was active the passage mode, authenticate, and then immidately disabled it. I didnt keep in passage mode until 05:51 Passage mode will take it out of auto-lock mode until you lock it from the button on the INSIDE or automation or via apps. There is no way to lock it from the outside while in passage mode. What I'm trying to explain in the video is that you will need to re-enable passage mode AND authenticate each time you want to enter passage mode. Other latch smart locks that I've test can lock from the outside (WHILE in PASSAGE MODE) and then you return and unlocked, it will stay in unlocked until you locked again, like a normal latch lock with a key. What they have now, is not a deal breaking and will work for a bedroom, its just an extra step that is not needed, each and every time when you want to lock it and come back into passage mode. To make it eaiser, they have to have a setting to lock it from the outside while in passage mode and also they need a custom time settings while in auto mode. I hope this helps you understand a little clearer.
Great video as always, Eric, thanks. Just a heads up, Yale has had an Assure lever style lock that has been supported by HomeKit for many years now if you added that orange HomeKit adapter. I had it in my old house. This one looks much better though.
@@ModernDayTech I’m a huge Aqara fan. Been using them since before they went mainstream. This lock is definitely on my list of next up devices to get. Again, great video and I appreciate your work. That Yale lock is yesterday’s news lol. Had back in like 2018. I can see how it would be easy to forget 👍🏻.
@@ModernDayTech not really, that’s only if you’re using it for main door which have the 3 point lock. But bedroom uses and other doors inside the house it would be fine. Like a office room or something. Which would be my case.
So is there really no way to completely disable auto-lock permanently? I don’t want auto-lock nor a temporary passage mode at all, just want to lock it when I want to.
@litex2x397 The setting say permanent, but it comes out of passage mode when you lock via apps or automation. You have hit the button on inside lever and re-authenticate. I talk about that issue in the video.
I wish that passage mode button could be reprogrammed to a “lock toggle”. From the inside I could hit the button to lock or unlock the lock. That’s it. Passage mode just confuses things and I think should be managed in the app -not on the only physical button on the inside portion of the lock.
I understand what you're saying, but just realize that 99.9% of the locks on the market aren't very secure and are mostly there to keep honest people honest. The nice thing is they hide the key slot, so it's not visible as part of the everyday design.
@@ModernDayTech I currently have several Yale Assure lock SL connected by August. No key and are pretty reliable with HomeKit but I don't care for the wifi plug for each lock. Even if you have two locks nearby each one needs their own plugged in wifi module and for some reason I find that annoying. Yale said they were going to have a matter upgrade module but came out with a wifi module instead. Perhaps UWB Home Key will arrive in something I like a few years from now to make it easy for my elder family members. So some locks don't have keys, I own them, but it seems only Yale has done this. I just wish there were more choices. Keep up the good work!

I don't see why not. Just not the quick auto-lock of the U300 so depending on where it's located it might lock up too fast.

i hope this is available in australia
07:36 - I don't see it on Amazon AU yet, but it is on Aqara AU.
Does this lock have enough coverage of it to cover a exterior door that has a lock and knob separately
I would say No in 99.9% of doors, but also understand, I've seen a lot of door poorly cut, so you'll want to measure to see if you luck out.
