"Wicked" star Mandy Gonzalez reminisces about her nickname while in "In the Heights", the inadvertent tragic comedy that was "Dance of the Vampires" and finally hits that "last note" the way we all wanted to hear it.
Saw her in wicked, she received a standing ovation even before she sang, she was caught suddenly and speechless for a second . i didn't understand why. it was my first time hearing or seeing her perform, i was stunned, I'm a pretty thick skinned person and she made me cry, her voice touches your heart, God bless her.
"The Beast don't need no vocal rehearsal!" LOL XD
So true.
Yup
The Beast just got thru CHEMO and may she be The Beast for many years to come
"The Beast don't need a vocal rehearsal." Yeeeesssssss. You have no idea how much I love this.
I love how Seth just HATES I'm Not That Girl because of that one note at the end! Well, Seth, you should be very proud of Stephanie j. Block. I was at one of her concerts earlier this year, and she wanted to sing I'm Not That Girl and Defying Gravity back-to-back without stopping between the songs, so she sang the last note of I'm Not That Girl higher so that it would lead into Defying Gravity! Lol
Also, Mandy is incredible! It's so true that The Beast don't need no vocal rehearsals!
mikaela cash I heard Emily Koch sing it when she was on tour in Dallas and she went up one octave. It works with the song.
mikaela cash
That's wild and so cool. But it drives me nuts that Seth would prefer to end that song on the high belted note that Mandy demonstrates here. Ending the song on the low note adds such an energy of being defeated and, in a way, Elphaba's acceptance of not being good enough.
@@Scandisk10 Agreed
the last note is so uncomfortable, but i can't stop listening to it...
When this song happened in the beginning of act two everybody started laughing because we all thought it was a joke and then we realized it was actually in the show and it wasn’t a joke
I must say, I've never seen an elphaba sing it high, i personally kinda like it lower, because it's so intimate, and plus i think that there's other moments where her high notes are, and should likely be there... i'm not that girl is rightfully so simplistic, intimate, beautiful, sad, and heartfelt :) but mandy can really sing!
THAT LAST NOTE GAVE ME WHIPLASH 😭😭😭
She was amazing in In the Heights (back when I had no idea who she or LMM was!) and in Hamilton. Amazing actress and such an amazing voice. Yes she has a rockstar belt but she also has so much color and depth and variety in her voice, and it's lovely when it's quiet too. And her vibrato! I can always tell when it's her singing :)
MANDY SLAYS MY LIFE
You can always spot an Elphie by their fingernails :)
I adore her voice.
Seths placement when he sings Tonight I’m obsessed!
people how was that last note uncomfortable... she hit it beautifully...
Wow this woman is an amazing singer and performer!!!!
ANGELICAAAA
I can't explain my happiness when I heard that...
I actually really like "I'm not that girl" because it's lower. It's a nice break between all of the crazy high notes.
"huh! the beast don't need uh vocal rehearsal"... can't tell you how many times I rewound it!!
That's why Seth's my idol...
OMG that ending of "I'm not that Girl" was so perfect! exactly what I was waiting to hear the first time I heard the song.
I saw her in Wicked!! she was fantastic!!!!
It's actually really sad that "dance..." didn't work out. The original is soooooooo amazing.
Ehh, I have to disagree on the last note. That one's all too high compared to the other notes and it seems out of character at the moment. The song is very emotional an intimate and I think putting that belting note at the end kind of ruins it. There's plenty of room to wail in No Good Deed and Defying Gravity.
Money note..
I loved Dance of the Vampires (I saw it 3 times) but it was too Campy for Broadway. I became a big fan of Mandy thanks to this show. Then I followed her career and went to other shows she was in . I didn't see her in Hamilton because I couldn't afford a ticket.
I love Mandy and this is great. However, the original version of "Dance of the Vampires" (Tanz der Vampire) is WAY better and not as ridiculous. Thank god..
Chase Fowler I agree, maybe if they’d remained faithful to the original German musical it would’ve done better
the original german is the first one i heard and when i figured that HALF OF THE SONGS ARE TOTAL ECLIPSE, I FLIPPED MY SHIT
she's a BEAST!
Seth's face at 2:27 and 2:43 is a copious amount of wonderful.
I love that there's someone on this earth that's hates that effing note as much as I do. It fills me with rage when I hear these amazing women have to hit that horrible low note to end out that song!
LMAO okay that was beautiful but I think we need I give Elphabas a break and not give them another song to worry about!
She...is just amazing
The beast don't need know vocal reversal!
That's so funny! Love the last note lol!!!!!
What a vocalist!
So sweet
@BroadwayJonathan I'm sure Seth proposed that re-write with his tongue in his cheek. If anything, I bet he'd prefer the note remain the same as the previous. That's more typical of showtunes.
Sad part is, even today she has no idea the show she was in had nothing to do with the original material in Europe.
Oh well...if Crawford had shocked in the 1st rehearsal a lot of things would have been different :P
Mandy is so pretty!
thaaaaat......GIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLL
OMG I DIED!
It does sound so much better, however, as much as I loved it, belting that last note is so predictable, while the actual show ending was something different, something more interesting.
WHAT THE HELL I LOVE HER!
I hate how Seth thinks that every song needs to end on a high note! Even in the song example "I'm not that girl" it feels so out of place to end so high. Low notes can be beautiful too!
TOTALLY say the french version of the Vampire musical
This video was epic!
my mom!!!!
No offense to Seth, his solution didn't work. No offense to Mandy, it was a bit off.
No offense to you, it's a joke.
Seth often mentions that Christine has only one high C. So is that Phantom of the Opera song ending high E prerecorded then?
CarSVernon yeah. That whole song is prerecorded.
Nick Rogers i'm pretty sure it's at most just the last runs
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's mentioned that the number is on tape in his "Tales from the Pit" Obsessed episode with a violinist from the pit. Again, I may be wrong.
SHE WAS IN AIDA
When Mandy ends TEOTH, she ends with a certain *ELPHABA RIFF*
Although I don't particularly enjoy Ms. Gonzalez in the role of Elphaba, she does have a great voice and I would love to have seen her in "In the Heights" or "Aida."
in all seriousness, please take good care of your voice and rehearse well, everyone
2:59 - 4:25 Total Eclipse
5:41 I’m Not That Girl
fuck, damn it :O can't believe... love it. she's just perfect.
I'm seeing her as Angelica the 5th of July
Couldn't agree more. Original German version is really well done, but Dance of the Vampires happens to be the worst thing I've ever seen done on Broadway.
I don't really like the ending in "I'm Not That Girl." Too belty and powerful for a slow, "music-box" style song.
You guys gonna be schocker to hear that germanys gonna lose its EXCELLENT german production of hamilton for Dance of the Vampires 😫
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hahahahahah brava! I knew exactly what he was talking about before he even started playing. It's odd that it ends on a low E.
03:31 cual es la musica whats is music original ?¿?¿
Dance of the vampires
@ritsfata And performer. And by the way, dude, that high note ending on not that girl is HORRIBLE!
what is ridiculous is this show is still running in Germany.
Katrina Lenk please 🙆🏻♀️❤️
6:02 - 6:03 honey-dripped bliss...
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE SETH END OF I'M NOT THAT GIRL!
@overthemoo I know, I just don't like her singing that ending. Doesn't fit.
I'd have to disagree with Seth. This song isn't meant to be belty.
5:41
i think he should have jennifer dinoia do this!
what a cute lady....
Total eclipse on steroids?
I'm not that girl doesn't need that high note. It seems unnecessary and out of place
