    I work in a manual only job shop and just last week I had a guy come in with a big bar of damascus and some drawings, he asked if I could make him a dozen faucet/tap handles for his new house. I can't believe that I haven't worked with this stuff much before, it machines like a dream and is now my third favorite material to machine besides aluminum bronze and 4140. Beautiful chuck key Joe! Keep up the good work mate and cheers from Cleveland Ohio USA!

    Based on the principles of your favorite tap handle, add a center detent to all future chuck keys and vise handles.
    Find a small steel ball and a spring is a slightly smaller size. Install them on the back side of your handle. Then add a center feature to the handle that clicks nice with the ball with the tension you have.

    Another good job done. You still scare me silly when you climb Mill your cut was getting bigger as you neared the cone. Don't think I have seen you turning between centers yet, another project maybe, you could have done the Tommy bar between centres.
    Keep up the good work.

      I know what you mean climb milling can go wrong quick. I was only doing .3mm DOC so I don’t think it’s to bad on a mill of this size.
      Yeah your right I haven’t turned between centres before and tbh I want to try it to check my tailstock in aligned correctly. So maybe a video I do at some point. All the best.

    Great video joe. Nice to see you’re settling into the new workshop. Have you thought about a Damascus steel machinist’s hammer with nice brass and copper faces. I know you’ve not long made a hammer but think the Damascus would look really well with brass and copper.

    • @MachiningwithJoe
      @MachiningwithJoe  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah a Damascus hammer would look amazing the contrast between the brass copper and Damascus would be something else. Looks like I’ll be on the look out for some more billets big enough to make a hammer :)

    Great video! Glad to see your back up and running. Just a thought, the music was a tad distracting. Had to turn the TV up to hear your voice, then turn it back down when the music would come so it didn't wake up the kids. Music should add background ambiance. Other than that, keep up the great work and projects.

      Hey Shawn thank you for the feedback I will know for next time to lower the volume on the music. Hope to hear from you on the channel again, all the best.

    Never thought about making a tool from Damascus, but man that is probably one of the nicest chuck keys around. How would you say that it machines compared to a regular carbon steel? Cheers

      Hi dude yeah I feel like I want all my tools made from this steel it looks incredible. It machined surprisingly nice. I would almost say the chips were coming of lovely and I wonder If it’s down to the multiple layers that make up the steel. And best of all if the drive end shows signs of wearing this steel can be hardened so result.

    Damascus steel is great stuff, I have a few Damascus steel knives. It is my understanding that Damascus is a weaker steel but I think it has to do with the steel chemistry that was used to make the Damascus. Either way, it’s an awesome project and great video

      Hi T A Ranson I have always wanted a Damascus Knife the effects that the thinner steel can have is awesome. Glad you enjoyed speak soon.

    Have you changed your workshop? Did you sell the Harrison M300? I wondered what Westway oil you used for the service as I'm getting a M300? Are Westway oils good?

    • @MachiningwithJoe
      @MachiningwithJoe  2 роки тому

      Yeah I’m in a new workshop now just at the end Of my garden purpose built for machining. I’ll have to get back to you in the oil grades but so far seems good quality for money.

      Thanks dude glad you enjoyed the video. The music is something new I’m trying to try and Give a more cinematic feel to the montage sections. Maybe different style of music ?

      I thought the music sounded great. It was put in all the right places and not when Joe was trying to tell us something. And it was the right type of music in my opinion of Couse.

    Hey Joe, Good video, there were only two things that I want to address
    1.Maybe make the music sound level a bit lower, it's a bit high compared to the segments when you are talking.
    2. Please find a one foot wooden ruler and smack it across the knuckles of your left hand,
    At 4:55 you reached in to mark the work piece with long sleeves and your 4 jaw chuck still spinning, a 4 jaw has an extra set of protrusions and weighs more than a 3 jaw which makes it more dangerous.
    If the ruler doesn't do the trick, please watch this video regarding a lathe accident with very similar circumstances
    ua-cam.com/video/S0o8kdh8HWs/v-deo.html
    And something else to bring up, If you were caught like this man was, Can your Missus hear you screaming from the work shed?
    Stay safe, regards from Australia
