    Thanks for taking the time to compare these. I learned a few things about my new 77502, like using the lift on the fly, your appreciation of the suspension system, and using the leaf blower to clean off the debris. I live in an 1840 farm house and my "lawn" is whatever spectrum of things growing in a frequently cut environment.

    Good comparison, one thing I might have asked was what is your gallons per hour use over the same lawn? Cutting grass is probably my favorite thing to do in retirement!
    That is impressive that you started off with a pasture and turned it into that! What was you process other than mowing?

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  8 місяців тому +2

      Gallons per hour - that's a great question. I'll do an experiment in the future.
      Where I built my house was an abandoned pasture field. I started out just brush hogging it to knock it down. Then I used my old Cub Cadet 149 tractor with deck to start "mowing" it. It was VERY hard on that machine. I dulled blades constantly. I was hitting small stubble stumps, rocks, uneven ruts, etc. Eventually I started mowing it with my Ford 2N and a 5' finish mower on the 3 point. The ag tires on the tractor actually helped smooth out the lawn - almost like aerating. And the weight of the tractor helped too - almost like rolling the lawn over time. I rolled the lawn one time in 23 years. We used to have horses, and I did spread manure over the lawn a few times. I've also done some over-seeding with Penn State lawn grass seed mix. And in a few spots, I've done some light leveling with a mix of sand and top soil. But basically - it's just the result of 23 years of keeping at it, mowing - and adding milorganite, Sunday lawn, and a few years of TrueGreen here and there.

    A very good video. We need more videos like this. Can you not raise the seat to look at the amount of gas in the tank? What is the model of your older Toro mower?

      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Unfortunately - the new TIMECUTTER with MYRIDE system does not allow for the seat to be tipped forward, so seeing how much gasoline in the tank is nearly impossible. I'm not a mechanic - but I think it sounds like the seal along the overhead valve is leaking. I would contact Lowes and see what their policy is - whether they take the machine back with less than an hour and repair it/replace it, or if you have to take it to an authorized Toro service center to be fixed under warranty. Either way - I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue. Our two Toro machines have been perfect and without any issues.

    I can see the difference that suspension makes. Right now I just have a John Deere x370, but I’m eyeing larger mowers and zero turns. I don’t think I’d get a zero turn mower without some sort of suspension to smooth out the ride.

      The suspension is amazing. I wouldn't have guessed it would make such an impressive difference.

    In the vid at 6:30 we see the mower rolling from a side view of the mower frame and of the "MyRide" chair deck... the deck is bouncing away while the mower frame is in a smoother motion. About the opposite of what I'd expected.

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  6 місяців тому +1

      It's a bit of an illusion I believe. The seat is smoothing out the bumps. And I'm wondering if the GoPro recording is making the chassis of the machine seem smooth.

  • @watershedoverlook
    @watershedoverlook 8 місяців тому +2

    Curious, what (if anything) drove the decision to downsize the deck from 60 to 54? Is the 54 better at the cemetery?
    Also, I'm astounded to hear you've never removed the deck! I had my Timecutter deck off countless times...cleaning, blade replacement, belt service, etc. I must've been doing something wrong! 😉😎👍

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  8 місяців тому +1

      Good question! The 60" just barely (like 1 inch clearance on each side) fits in our enclosed 6x12 trailer. AND - you guessed it - doesn't fit through some of the rows in the cemetery.
      Perhaps ignorance is bliss - I've never cleaned the bottom of our deck. That's probably a bad admission. And I've never changed or sharpened the blades on the deck. I think it is due for a new set of blades. But I'm also very careful not to hit any rocks, stumps, or sticks.

    • @watershedoverlook
      @watershedoverlook 8 місяців тому

      @PurpleCollarLife You've never changed or sharpened the blades in 5 seasons?!?!? And the cut quality is still acceptable? That is incredible!
      FWIW, I think you will find that after you've done it once, dropping the deck is pretty straightforward. On my Toro, it was about a 60 second job. 👍🙂

    How do you move the mower,without power, or a charged battery?

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  6 місяців тому

      It shows in the instruction manual that you pull both of the transmission release pins, turn the key to "On", move the drive controls to the drive position (so the parking brake isn't engaged) and then you can push the mower to move it. But you should only do this if absolutely necessary. It's best to charge the battery and start the machine.

  • @bradh74
    @bradh74 8 місяців тому +2

    With the acreage you have you may need a 60" cut but after a 52-54" (give or take a few inches) you start to have issues with scalping your lawn (in spite of the anti-scalp wheels). The cut is typically best if you can get away with a 5?" deck or less. I wish I would have keep the grass cutting job had as a kid but watching grass grow wasn't easy as a young man. It turns out that other than the trimmer that was my favorite job. The think that gets me about all of this stuff (I'm not an engineer) is that Kawasaki makes some of the most powerful motorcycle engines as well as durable but the lawnmower engine that's over 650cc is only 23HP, the 999cc engine is 36HP. Now I understand that an industrial engine is meant to be durable but some of these motorcycles have engine that last for hundreds of thousands of miles. I'm sure their engineers know what they're doing but you'd think that they could make that thing sip fuel and have plenty of power in a smaller package. Just saying. That's a head scratcher for sure! I would be happy with many of these because of how nice they are so don't get me wrong but I have a small yard so... Nice video and thanks for sharing the differences (pros & cons) between them. (quiet power equals 🥰 happy customers)

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  8 місяців тому +2

      Great points about the ability of these motorcycle engines to use very little gasoline. The zero turns certainly seem to use their fair share.
      As far as the deck width - you're right that the wider decks can scalp more. BUT - the wider deck also hides the defects of the lawn better. I've mowed this lawn with a 32" deck, and even push mowing with a 22 inch mower. The results with the wider deck always look better, because it seems to blend the uneven terrain better than the smaller width deck does. Does that make sense?

    • @bradh74
      @bradh74 8 місяців тому +1

      @PurpleCollarLife I think so, that's also a great point because it's more uniform that way. I had to mow different at my home because of scalping. Most yards won't have that issue, the 72" would be worse if you have a bumper lawn.

  • @Bob_Adkins
    @Bob_Adkins 4 місяці тому +1

    I have the exact 54 you have. I love the MyRide, the Kawasaki, and the 5g tank, and dislike the same things you dislike. However, I will upgrade 3 things from "dislike" to "despise". Traction is awful, and those tires rip up my yard, even turning very gently. My last 3 ZTRs didn't have that problem. The deck chains get tangled and if I don't notice it makes my yard look like a drunk monkey cut it. I have centipede grass, and cut on the lowest setting, so my anti-scalp wheels hit bumps and the deck jumps up and the chains get slack and tangle. I blame Toro's choice of chain, which is not anti-tangle. Also, the anti-scalp wheels drag on my driveway on the lowest setting, making a screeching noise and wearing out the wheels.

      Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. It sounds like you’ve had a bad time with your Toro. That has not been our experience. In our 5th summer now, the Toro Timecutter still works great. I’ve never replaced the blades and they still cut nicely. But I’m also very careful where I cut. I only cut grass - not thick brush - and I pick up sticks in my way, and avoid gravel and dirt. The only thing I’ve done is regular oil changes, replace the battery, and general upkeep.

Obviously, you work for a competitor, and you just want to trash Toro. Go away.
