My grandfather on my mom's side, (who was Welsh and Scot-Irish) played concertina, bagpipes, penny whistle and clarinet. He was much in demand for sessions and bands, and funerals (for the bagpipes of course). He died at age 48 of black lung, after over 30 years in the mines of Wales and the USA, so all I have are stories, but from the stories, he played them all very well, how I wish I could have known him. His instruments were given to various people after he died except for the bagpipes that were eventually stolen. I play a few things myself but not concertina, I have always wanted a concertina to try and learn to play one well. I'm in my 60's now, but there MIGHT still be time.
Dear Aria, Thank you for sharing your wonderful story about your grandfather. It seems he was truly an interesting man. It is never late to start playing on a musical instrument. I myself play except of the concertina on a piano, guitar, jaws harp and few more. I recorded this piece after 2 years of playing concertina with no teacher, just by hearing. I wish you all the best and hope you will start play the concertina soon.
@@golanhalima Thank you for the reply. I don't think I'm too old either, I play sax, harmonica and penny whistle but have always been confounded by keyboards and strings. Concertina doesn't seem quite as confounding (but I might be wrong...) Maybe I will gift myself one for Christmas or my birthday and give it a serious try.
@@arlaabrell8658 do that. I hope that one day i will comment on a video of you playing the concertina and make you happy like you did to me with your family memories. Marry Christmas.
I did not think that it was possible to play it on a 20-button, because the version I have of it, in G, has F sharps, F naturals and a C sharp. If it were transposed to C, as you did, then the version I have would require a B-flat. But I see that this version doesn't. Hmm, that means that I can do it in G on my GD 20-button, if I just leave out the F natural, and just play e, c,c, the way you go a,f,f
When folk songs traveled, before audio recordings and sheet music, people adjusted them to their instruments they played without fearing it sounding different. That was part of what made the player shine. People are listening to your interpretation. Accomplished players will intentionally drop notes, change notes, add ornamentation, what matters is for it to sound nice.
Honestly I've found a lot of tunes are playable on the 20 button seeing as that's all I have at home. If you don't mind adjusting the keys then it's all good!
Pick a version in A, that's 3 sharps. Transpose up 2 whole steps and you'll b in key of C.. There will be only one f# accidental beginning of 3rd measure B part.
@rattyfingers8621 Two whole steps up from A is C#. The version in the Fiddler's Fake Book cannot be played on a 20 button. If the Fiddler's Fake Book version were transposed to C, it would require a Bb and an F#, in addition to the B natural and F natural. The version that this guy is playing is slightly simpler with a few notes removed, thereby allowing it to be played on a 20-button. Since I have a GD 20-button, I can play this simplified version in G, which is the most common key to play it in.

Was this more strenuous to get around than a better quality concertina? I saw you mention you were pulling the best from the worst, and I can totally get what you mean, I think these are the ones I see for 200 euro on amazon... I was really attracted to getting a (good) 20 button concertina to play, but the main appeal is that I thought it would be less physically strenuous. Yes, it is typical. This is one of the things that makes this a low quality concertina. It is even more significant in this tune because of the way it is played. Still, I love this instrument and have a lot of good time with it.
