Living and Writing from Conflict to Convergence; The Work and Book on Coming Together to Solve Tough Problems (The Rule of Law in the New Abnormal). The host for this show was Chuck Crumpton. The guest was Rob Fersh.
The discussion was: We’ll explore how the convergence work led to the book, how the book came together, how the book and work serve collaborative problem-solving, and how this story-driven book can inspire and equip a wide range of people-from ordinary citizens to political, policy, community, business, non-profit and academic leaders-to become effective problem-solvers when facing tough issues and conflicts. Most of the book’s examples are taken from work on public issues, but the approach recommended is broadly applicable.
The takeaway was: People are not as divided as widely believed. Most people share fundamental values and their disagreement most often lies in how to further those values. It is In a far wider range of circumstances than commonly thought, it is possible for people who disagree to find solutions of mutual gain, or higher ground. It is frequently possible to find solutions where for one side to win the other sides need not lose. Mindsets are fundamental to success at collaboration. Seeing conflict as something that can be constructive, giving others the benefit of the doubt, having a curiosity mindset, prioritizing relationships, and believing that higher ground is possible create a foundation for effective problem-solving. The benefits of working collaboratively extend well beyond the resolution of any issue at hand. Working together across differences often leads to bonds that promote future collaboration and positive interpersonal relationships. The ideas in this book are intended also to create a more functional and less divisive society overall. If taken to scale in a wide array of settings, the ideas in this book can contribute to reducing the polarization and 'us-them' attitudes that increasingly mark interpersonal interactions and civil discourse.
