Billy Joel actually deserves it. The amount of people he cheated to get to where he is is pretty sad. Not saying he isn't talented, his NYears show a few years back was one of the greatest musical events i have ever been too, but still had no idea of his utter smarmyness.
Joe Chabot I heard there’s 2 sides to some of that. For example, Liberty Devito wanted writing credits for a drum beat. His current band has been with him a very long time which wud suggest he’s not all that bad and perhaps even good to work for. He definitely had a period after this manager where he was likely suspicious of everyone and wudnt trust easily. As with most stories, there’s likely some fact and some fiction.

How can Billy Joel be that blind and ignorant to not know he was getting ripped off for tens of millions of dollars? Didn't he ask for an independent audit of his finances? For God's sake, when you're as huge as Billy and have as many hit songs as he does, you better pay attention to every cent spent and earned, or it will bite you square in the ass!

The manager was falsifying documents that he gave to Billy Joel ,so when he looked at the paperwork he thought everything was fine and didn't know there was any money missing . It's not like he had cash from a personal bank account go missing so the bank statement would tell him there was cash gone,it's all investments and dodgy business deals with tons of paperwork involved with payments from concerts and royalties etc coming in and the paperwork would show that this cash was invested here and that cash there etc. It's a lot easier for us 'normal 'people to keep an eye on things as we don't have millions invested all over the place,we have cash in the bank which we use to live on. Billy Joel once lived in a Castle and now is extending his current stately Long Island property, so regardless of having to sue to recoup monies years ago for a long long time he's been very wealthy.
Dave Lombardo did a 90 city tour with Slayer. After taxes he made $67,000. You'd think being a founding member of Slayer that he'd make more. Nope. The music industry is exactly that - an industry. Many musicians are ground under by the lies and deceit from their bandmates, managers and record labels. Truly a terrible experience to be a slave to such a horrible industry.
I think Willie Nelson's problem was during the 1980's Farm Aid concerts. Willie was on stage and his accountant yelled out..."You owe taxes"...to which Willie hollered back "I know l own Texas".
I remember when I heard Billy Joel's Xwifes brother in law. Its one of the reasons BJ don't like to sing piano man. It cost a bundle even if he plays more than a few notes.
One classic hit song can earn an artist millions in royalties over the years. And that's just one song. The catalogue of hit songs of these music legends will ensure that they're never poor.!!!👍📷⛅🌍👌💐🎹🎤🎧🎼
I was actually in the room one night while Willie's pay was being counted prior to handing it to his manager. not long after the IRS thing hit the papers. 50 grand in small bills. nothing over a 20.
It's to make it look like the wealthy don't get away with not paying taxes, so we continue to be ripped off obliviously. They let all the big fish avoid taxes & run all the schemes to crash the economy they like.
How by showing people who can barely pay their bills multi millionaires? Most people on this list is a millionaire many times over. Hell, Billy Joel is worth 225 million dollars!!!
Remember these are people...they have hearts. If willie Nelson wants to take care of his friends then that's his business. And having alot of money doesn't mean you are rich. You can have boat loads of money and be as unhappy as they come. Money will not buy you happiness...but it will help you and others along the way. I'd say wealth is what you make it.
Lemmy was 90% on tour and 10% in la whether it be his apartment or hanging out at the Rainbow bar and grill. I don’t know where you got these facts but there is a lot of myths and misconceptions. Lemmy at the time of his death was worth around 10million He lived in a small apartment because he wanted to, he didn’t want a huge mansion like everyone else so he chose an apartment. That doesn’t make the man automatically poor. He wasn’t an extravagant spender
I chained my bike up behind a bar for lunch, as they served me the food I asked who was in the older motorhome parked behind the bar, they said David Allen Coe, that he was performing 2 nights there (Kouts IN), and they wished he'd take a shower. I always liked his work.
Pay your taxes, run your financial affairs properly, keep savings for emergencies and if your rich be very careful who you get to manage you and who does your financial stuff, and don't get any kind of expensive habit, all the things some of these people ignored.
I am a victim of this too. Back in 1963 when my band "The Turds" was in the studio recording our first single "Who Ate All The Pies", our manager, Conn Fleesam, disappeared with £10,000 - he has never been seen since - and nor have we. . . .
Lemmy had a lot of money but I'm sure he channelled some of that to his son and maybe other people. If you consider how Phil Campbell had a luxury car and a year-round chauffeur, or Mikkey Dee has Ferraris, Lemmy just didn't like showing off, but he had a lot for sure.
@shadow nah, they're fucking stupid like you, all it would take is sitting down for 5 minutes with a calculator to figure out they were getting fleeced
Willie Nelson as Sam Kinison said was mixed up 🤗 " Willie thought he owed Texas, Not Taxes. " " Free 4th of July BBQ!!!! Come on Down!! " IRS no Willie not Texas, Taxes 15 million
Yes it sucks that Conor Oberst had his reputation messed up. (We should do something about people being able to destroy someone on a whim) but he is worth over 100 million dollars. He’s fine on cash
he is definitely not worth over 100 million dollars. you probably got that from one of those shitty celeb net worth sites, which are all complete and utter bullshit. i’d be surprised if he was even a millionaire.
There are so many such cases within the music industry : our lawmakers need to think of some way of giving legal advice to musicians about not only not being ripped-off, but also of not being cheated out of everything they own. The Bay City Rollers started off as naive 16 year olds being treated by their manager and record company as easy-to-cheat cash cows. They are all penniless, and some had to return to work as eg a plumber or a nurse, and two of them died in their early 60s. The Osmonds suffered a similar financial death, with only Donny and Marie having successful post-Osmonds careers. The music industry needs to do something against these evil sharks.

I saw Scott Weiland at Voodoofest in 2008. He was so blasted on stage, I joked that he was going to be on the news soon dead of an overdose. I wasn't surprised when it came true.
I think Billy Joel might have drank his money. He came into my work once for a photo shoot and the makeup artist kept telling me she was getting drunk off the alcohol fumes coming off him. This was like 8 am too.
The talent that we love in our music idols is what usually makes them incapable of solid financial planning. They have tremendous talent, but it comes as a tradeoff for something else. A simple strategy is for the performer to save/invest 10% of everything they make. Look at it as though it doesn't exist. Use those funds to produce 1% per month returns (easy to do).
I saw that Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues has a net worth of "only" $10M. For someone who has toured incessantly since 1981 and was one of the biggest concert draws in the 90s and 00s, I wonder what he did to piss all that money away.
1) incompetent or corrupt management 2) IRS 3) Bad financial choices or lifestyle choices.. Musicians and creative types are not generally money smart. Business managers and accountants are worth it.

I think Willie Nelson's problem was during the 1980's Farm Aid concerts. Willie was on stage and his accountant yelled out..."You owe taxes"...to which Willie hollered back "I know l own Texas".
I hate hearing these stories. Billy Joel seems like such a nice guy.
@@ryanmcneila1957 oh, did you forget your medication this morning

@barry durham wouldn't surprise me, many Joo's are like that.
He's worth $225 million
I remember when I heard Billy Joel's Xwifes brother in law. Its one of the reasons BJ don't like to sing piano man. It cost a bundle even if he plays more than a few notes.
"... treating the whole operation as a risky small business."
But it _is_ a risky small business.
FO Biggles not if you’re talented
One classic hit song can earn an artist millions in royalties over the years. And that's just one song. The catalogue of hit songs of these music legends will ensure that they're never poor.!!!👍📷⛅🌍👌💐🎹🎤🎧🎼
I was actually in the room one night while Willie's pay was being counted prior to handing it to his manager. not long after the IRS thing hit the papers. 50 grand in small bills. nothing over a 20.
Nice job! Very thorough.
Never heard of Cat power or Grizzly Bear lol
Wasn’t expecting to see Grizzly Bear in the opening shots haha.
This kind of video is intended to make us average people feel better.
I grew up poor and with a bad education so I feel lucky after watching these loosers

I’m more broke than Billy. Maybe we should colab. Lol.
I love the boats he’s designing. REALLY WELL DONE !!!
It blows my mind how these people can have almost unlimited amounts of money but can’t figure out how to pay an accountant.
Lemmy was 90% on tour and 10% in la whether it be his apartment or hanging out at the Rainbow bar and grill. I don’t know where you got these facts but there is a lot of myths and misconceptions.
Lemmy at the time of his death was worth around 10million
He lived in a small apartment because he wanted to, he didn’t want a huge mansion like everyone else so he chose an apartment. That doesn’t make the man automatically poor. He wasn’t an extravagant spender

These people aren't street broke trust me.

I am a victim of this too. Back in 1963 when my band "The Turds" was in the studio recording our first single "Who Ate All The Pies", our manager, Conn Fleesam, disappeared with £10,000 - he has never been seen since - and nor have we. . . .
That's bad
OMG The Turds! I loved your single "That's Not A Rash, Elmer"!
How is Billy Joel “poor?”. He’s one of the most successful musicians of all time. His net worth is $250 million.
Poor guys. Thoughts and prayers...
You know that? Where is that financial information about Joel located?
Sly Stone doesn't have the money he once had but....
That van he lives in, is a custom van with a mini Recording
Studio built in it! 😉 💯 😉
Oh these poor drug addicted rock and roll people.
Yeah, such victims
Lemmy had a lot of money but I'm sure he channelled some of that to his son and maybe other people. If you consider how Phil Campbell had a luxury car and a year-round chauffeur, or Mikkey Dee has Ferraris, Lemmy just didn't like showing off, but he had a lot for sure.
Sounds like these folks are victims of a lot of vultures.
@shadow nah, they're fucking stupid like you, all it would take is sitting down for 5 minutes with a calculator to figure out they were getting fleeced
yes, there is a whole industry of parasites who leach off "Rock Stars"
Theresa Carmen Agreed. A lot of performers are not very smart aside from their art. You can give them great advice only to have them do the opposite.
Theresa Carmen they are often the victims of their own narcisstic stupidity
The IRS being the largest group of said vultures.
Oh man Billy Joel must be living off ramen noodles with 200+ million dollars

The Isley Brothers recorded Twist and Shout one year before the Beatles. The Top Notes recorded it two years before the Beatles.

Willie Nelson as Sam Kinison said was mixed up 🤗
" Willie thought he owed Texas, Not Taxes. "
" Free 4th of July BBQ!!!! Come on Down!! "

Billy Joel is still a, "Big Shot!" I love that song. Bruce shouldn't be on this list. He was ripped off, not his fault!
This list isn't artists who are poor because they got ripped off. It's artists who are poorer than you thought.
Billy Joel wrote Always a Woman about Elizabeth Weber.
Hah.. She'll lie like a thief.
@The 9-2-5 Outlaw Reviews: Those aren’t lyrics to the song but whatev
She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes. She can ruin your faith with her casual lies, and she only reveals what she wants you to see. She hides like a child but she's always a woman to me.
She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you. She can ask for the truth but she'll never believe you, and she'll take what you give her as long as it's free. Yeah she steals like a thief but she's always a woman to me.
Oh she takes care of herself. She can wait if she wants. She's ahead of her time. Oh and she never gives out, and she never gives in, she just changes her mind.
She'll promise you more than the garden of Eden then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding.but she'll bring out the best and the worst you can be. Blame it all on yourself 'cause she's always a woman to me.
Oh she takes care of herself. She can wait if she wants. She's ahead of her time. Oh and she never gives out, and she never gives in, she just changes her mind.
She's frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel. She can do as she pleases. She's nobody's fool. And she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree. And the most she will do is throw shadows at you but she's always a woman to me.
That's...that's insane. I believe it, but it's still insane.
My piano player buddy Sam told me a good joke.
"How do you make a musician a millionaire?....
Give em 10 million pounds".
Problem with ol' Willie, he thinks a dime bag costs a dime.
Do you know how much condoms cost?
Leonard Cohen also lost all his savings when his manager stole all his money. That's why he started touring when he was in his 70's

I was thinking the same thing
Oops, I spent $100,000,000 on 10 houses and 5 yachts. Spent more than I had so I must declare bankruptcy. LOL.
Billy Joel can call Madison square garden anytime he runs low on cash
I saw Scott Weiland at Voodoofest in 2008. He was so blasted on stage, I joked that he was going to be on the news soon dead of an overdose. I wasn't surprised when it came true.
Billy Joel is still worth $225 million

I think Billy Joel might have drank his money. He came into my work once for a photo shoot and the makeup artist kept telling me she was getting drunk off the alcohol fumes coming off him. This was like 8 am too.
Some times you don't want to know about the musicians you love.
As an investor for 42 years…if you’re generating 1% per month returns, that’s really good
How in the he'll are you getting an annual 12% return?
Billy Joel net worth in 2019-225 million. And Mr. I.R.S. Tapes Willie Nelson still has 25 million. Sorry, but that's not poor.
Exit Strategy Calculating someone's net worth isn't the same as calculating how much money a person has.
So you're calculating for the years through to 2019- 225 million?
i got 16 dollars . PLEASE HELP ME WILLIE !!!! i need 8 more bucks for a bag weed
That's crazzzy, just 2minutes and 42 seconds and alredi advert o. Whaaat?

I used to think that Billy Joel was very rich but apparently he is just rich. This is very shocking. 😭😱
he's $250 Million "just" rich.
Willie spent most of his money on weed.
And the rest he just wasted.
No you jerk, he raised a family!
@@jefryt67 I like him he same to be a down to earth
I saw that Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues has a net worth of "only" $10M. For someone who has toured incessantly since 1981 and was one of the biggest concert draws in the 90s and 00s, I wonder what he did to piss all that money away.

1) incompetent or corrupt management 2) IRS 3) Bad financial choices or lifestyle choices.. Musicians and creative types are not generally money smart. Business managers and accountants are worth it.
In the other words, IRS, Managers, Accountants, Event Venues, etc eat up all your fortune unfortunately !
Well I don’t care, I will always Love Sly And The Family Stone…..
Magic bands, their videos and songs still gives me goosebumps every time….
My favorite song is Dance To The Music and Everyday People….
My best memory is when I was driving with my friends in Italy and we were listening to Dance To The Music (a live recording) and man we couldn’t contain, we parked in a forest, jumped from the car and start dancing and clapping like crazy, “Hey music lovaaaah” 😆

Big names in Indie music.
Musicians are some of the worlds most famous poor people. Rockstars not so much, but popular musicians nonethless. I remember reading that Geoff Rickly from Thursday saying he made less than $11,000 the previous year and worked in a furniture store to make enough money. It's a gig economy and success comes and goes
That's BS that Willie Nelson's "friends" take advantage of his kindness like they do! No doubt that's the main reason for his financial issues!
Surprised to see no Mick Fleetwood on this list (he has had multiple bankruptcies, multiple divorces, bad investments, and had a years-long cocaine habit). He estimated in an article I saw recently that he's blown $60 million since the 1970s between cocaine and bad investments
Bless his heart, I know what Sly is going through.
