Might be jumping the gun but I have a feeling 10-20 years from now you'll hear "Bro you didn't play Expedition 33? I don't mean to be a downer but I really think we should wait until we know more about this game before using it as a rallying cry for AAA turn-based RPGs. It looks very pretty but if its just walking down pretty corridors in between fights and cutscenes its not exactly doing what Square Enix is doing back on the SNES or now.
This is where I'm at too. The trailer was a lot of cutscenes and combat and not much exploring the world. I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be a flashy but limited 10-20 hour experience. Still cool! But I'm tempering my expectations until they show more.
Seriously, we don't know anything about this game yet. It feels weird to say it has a gripping story when all we have so far is the elevator pitch. I think this is a new studio, so it's very possible this is just a short 10-hour hallway simulator. And honestly, I don't understand why this is a huge win for turn-based games when it's built around real-time elements like perfectly timed dodges and stuff. It sounds like turn-based combat really isn't good enough and needs to be action-based to do well.
why does everyone just forget that Persona 5 and octopath traveler exist? Like these games were also turn based and also did really well, live a live did really well too. Bravely Default also did well and same with it's sequel. Like turn based Combat has always been there and been successful. Just because newer titles of FF aren't turn based doesn't mean Square doesn't hear our calls, if you really want them to go back to making turn based combat RPGs then play those games, show that's what we want
Its because Persona 5 and Octopath Traveler both have cartoonish graphics. The industry bigwigs keep saying stuff about how turn based combat is unimmersive, uncanny, and off putting and weird to see when paired with realistic character models. Now Expedition 33 is mostly turn based combat with realistic graphics, so all those industry bigwigs are gonna see just how wrong or right they are with all those statements they've made over the last few years.
I don't understand why everyone thinks final fantasy is turned based. That is why turn based battles used even american football was used on how characters and enemies were lines up. I saw this game at the XBOX showcase and looked to my partner and said "David from that youtube channel I watch will probably be excited about this one." Great video.
For that matter, there's plenty of turn based indie RPGs that are doing just fine. This seems more like one of those things managers tell themself to avoid having to acknowledge they have no clue what they're doing.
People who say that are often just chasing for their fortnight audience hyperactive zoomers and Deny themselves of any other type of audience. it always has to be the big one's.
So, the Belle Epoch is the bit when Chambers wrote (and set some of) his King in Yellow. The creepy story about the water that makes things into statues? Belle Epoch. There’s such cool stuff you could do with that! (Side note: that story, if you thought the ending was happy, read it again keeping in mind what having read the book does to peoples’ perspectives. It’s actually very ominous. And if you haven’t, read the King in Yellow! Not the in-universe book, though. Don’t read that! Just read the first four stories. NO MASK!?!)
Super excited for this game. Battle UI looks great, and the Free Aim / Reaction stuff looks cool too. Really nice to see it coming to a variety of platforms. (RIP Lost Odyssey, may you someday get the port you deserve.)
Now this is something to look forward to! This is something I can get behind with the battle mechs, the game play and best of all, the story! Ready to go and save another world!
David you and I have seen all from 1980-Now we know turn based is the correct way to go for RPGs action and strategy are great as well but the younger generations need to remember the history

Dude you are one of the last knight of the turn based that stand for all of us.
Finally a game that is basically made for me :D I'm closer to 40 than 30 now and I feel so taken by the gameplay and the visuals. It seems dark and brutal to me, like Dragon Age: Origins, but with a combat system that could have come from the final era of the Playstation 1. Thanks to games like Octopath Traveler, Baldur's Gate 3, the legacy of the Persona series and the remake/ remaster of the classic Final Fantasy titles, turn-based combat has fortunately never completely disappeared from the role-playing world. I just hope that it can keep up with the first impression in terms of content. Story, world, characters... I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the studio and actually even sent in an unsolicited application yesterday, as they are currently looking for support for their team. They are based in France, but remote work is also possible. So if there is anyone here looking for a good opportunity to get into the industry, take a look at the Sandfall website and just apply. Who knows, maybe you'll get lucky :)
I'm 34 now but, even when I was a little kid, I hated playing as kids or teenagers, and wanted to play as someone my dad's age, who was my hero when I was young. I really enjoyed the original US Nier since you played as the father. Didn't learn till later their was a different version where you played as a teen brother. Probably wouldn't have liked it as much.
Not gonna lie, this is the first game in the last few years that I'm actually hyped for. It's been a long time since I've watched a trailer and became excited for something. Usually it's just a general feeling of wanting to play something but actual excitement? It's rare anymore. I can't wait for Expedition 33.
Expedition 33 looks fantastic and we are hitting a resurgence of turnbased rpgs. I think Square promoting Asano shows that they are recognizing the shift back in the industry. Hopefully :) I'm sure this wont have it but man could you imagine if there was a day count down timer where you fail. That'd be badass for a hard mode
Oh crap, that means I'm already overdue to be era- It's always down to the final product, especially a JRPG plot where all the twists are hidden, but looking promising so far. Everyone has their own idea of what constitutes a 'mature' storyline. Teens are usually the protagonists because in Japanese culture by adulthood you're supposed to have all your emotional issues worked out. I know from personal experience that 33-year olds can be just as unstable sometimes, and it's only natural to be anxious when this is your final year of life unless you accomplish what no other group before you has managed. Timed hits are one of those factors that hasn't seen an evolution like this in quite some time.
While I didn’t care for the CRPG battle system of Baldur’s Gate, I’m happy it was a smash hit and open people’s eyes to a turn based system. It gives me hope for that the casuals will be more open to combat systems that aren’t action, souls esque, and DMC esque.
This was an instant wishlist on steam for me when I saw it. I hope it ends up being as great as it looks and other companies follow suit and bring us some high budget turn based RPGs.
Can’t forget that THE Clive Rosfield himself Ben Starr is returning to voice the lead role in this game as well. I was all in on this game before but learning that built the hype so much more!
Im going to be honest, I do love Turn based games, but FF16 was the first FF I have beaten since FF10. I am good with FF going action as long as there are games like this and Octopath Traveler.
I love turn based RPGs sooooo much. They are my favorite genre. It always cracks me up when people say its old and outdated and won't sell and I"m like hello Persona series??? Dragon Quest series??? They sell well. Now if only we could get my favorite franchise Final Fantasy to get back to its roots.
This one looks good. Seems to be bringing old school turn based into the modern age. I’m not as adamant about turn based as some of our peers but I am happy to see it not going away. PS, I was a humanities major and am totally down for you nerding out on historical influences on these games.
"I'm so sick of these two artstyles. This game looks so unique!" Uhh, are we seeing the same game footage? Because this absolutely fits the latter. While there are scenes that do have some color, many shots are typical monochrome you expect from edgier RPGs, with the artsyle also following those usual trends. Also, the game itself looks like a pretty shallow and typical humans=good/everything else=bad kinda game, with the villain sounding like yet another offensive misanthrope stereotype with a dumb gimmick.
Beat me to it I was going to say the same thing. I am an old gamer grew up in the turn base era I love that era too. I feel people all they care about just turn base not the story or the characters how they develop within the story, and the world building how that is done. They just see action rpg lts a crap game.
Though the characters are realistic this is definitely closer to some BG3 stylization than FFXVI's dreary visuals imo. Also the proportions are still a bit stylized
I am a turn based fanatic :D , However I also want to save money now, I noticed AAA games are costing small fortunes, I didn't even bother with ps5 due to the extreme cost of the unit and the games. Now I am perfectly happy playing turn based mobile games only spending minimally or giving the game the budget of a good ps4 game - for me the best turn based games out there include: Honkai Star Rail, Black Clover Mobile, Limbus Company and few indie steam games: Cross Blitz, Symphony of War, Cross Blitz, Rogue Book, TroubleShooter: Abandoned Children - check them out if you are a classic turn based jrpg lover
When I saw the active battle system with all the dodges and parries my jaw literally dropped. I hope they can deliver what's shown in the trailer. Absolute must buy next year.
When someone will ask me how Legend of Dragoon or FF IX should be made? I can point my finger to be similar with Expedition 33. Hats off 👏 Thats why competition is so important esp in gaming industry. From HD2D to Souls like to Metaphor/Persona-like and now this!!! JRPG is so alive!
Wow!!! Really excited for this game!!! (Although I finally played “FF16” and liked it a lot better than I thought I would!). And had no idea you were a History major! Another reason to be a fan!
There are games like that that are built purely for Action. I like action RPGs, too....but games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest...where there are many spells and options.....turn-based fits them more. I like to take my time to think on what spell do I use....what item. Games like Dark Souls...you don't have a party of characters, you can choose your build, so it's works fine. Games like Final Fantasy...have parties. You CAN'T choose a build for each character because, in most games, characters are built for specific roles. I'd rather control my party...instead on just one person while the AI controls the rest.....which means...strategy goes out the widow, and for numerous bosses and enemies...you NEED a strategy. (I effing hate it when an AI controlled character HEALS the enemy with a spell.....which can happen a lot when you have no control over your team's actions.)
Oh wow this game sounds a little like Lost Odyssey with the theme of making the most of how you live your life and others that have sacrificed coming before us. Sort of exploring similar themes but in a different way instead of immortals, they are all mortal since they know they will die in a year. Very cool.
I am so pumped to see more from Expedition 33. Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later in 2025 and hopefully we get a demo sometime beforehand to try out that awesome looking combat!
The way you described this game sounds like the PS3 reveal where the guy said this game is historically based on war in China and then he hit the giant enemy crab at his weak point to do massive damage
I was slightly bummed we didn’t get Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and to a lesser extent FF9. But this game looked amazing and went up towards the top of the list of games I’m excited for! I prefer turn based over action, but I can totally vibe with a mix of both
Personally, with the way It looks and the bit of story. It gives me "What if From Soft made a JRPG" vibes, which I would love if they did. Thank you for introducing me to this game, David.
@fineva8291 I own and have played Enchanted Arms. It's not exactly what I had in mind in my comment, since Enchanted Arms is a monster collecting game like pokemon/digimon.
Before the trailer even showed it was turn based I was into it and then when the gameplay section came in I was hooked I absolutely cannot wait to play it!
Mannn David I feel like The Legend of Dragoon Should be remade in this Vein with expanded stories, character backstories a few side quest that adds to the story.
The game looks like it'll be a hell of a time, but saying that it will be a FF killer is stretching it by a mile and a half. How many times has a game been marketed as a final fantasy killer and said game ends up becoming obscure?

I saw this game at the XBOX showcase and looked to my partner and said "David from that youtube channel I watch will probably be excited about this one." Great video.
Ha!! I love it!!
I'll never understand how someone can say turn-based RPGs are not viable today when games like D&D are more popular now than they've ever been
For that matter, there's plenty of turn based indie RPGs that are doing just fine. This seems more like one of those things managers tell themself to avoid having to acknowledge they have no clue what they're doing.
The comments for the original video were flooded with it. They live in a bubble ignorant of how many recent successful games we had.
Especially given the success of Baldur's Gate 3.
I haven't seen much besides the short gameplay trailer but im already on board! FINALLY a modern graphics turn based fantasy rpg!
Love the Lost Odyssey battle theme in the background. Brings back memories
Finally a game that is basically made for me :D
I'm closer to 40 than 30 now and I feel so taken by the gameplay and the visuals.
To old for this game, you died on the last painting
Not gonna lie, this is the first game in the last few years that I'm actually hyped for. It's been a long time since I've watched a trailer and became excited for something. Usually it's just a general feeling of wanting to play something but actual excitement? It's rare anymore. I can't wait for Expedition 33.
The trailer felt like a cross between FF and Dishonored. The second my brain made that connection it shouted “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!”
Expedition 33 looks fantastic and we are hitting a resurgence of turnbased rpgs. I think Square promoting Asano shows that they are recognizing the shift back in the industry. Hopefully :)
I'm sure this wont have it but man could you imagine if there was a day count down timer where you fail. That'd be badass for a hard mode
Oh crap, that means I'm already overdue to be era-
It's always down to the final product, especially a JRPG plot where all the twists are hidden, but looking promising so far.
The UI on the combat system is insane. Atlus levels of polished. Let’s hope it’s not a buggy mess
Thank you for shining light on this game. I'm so out of AAA gaming loop that I have not even heard of it and it's right up my alley.
Looks amazing.
And 33 huh, I doubt that is merely aesthetic.
I know this game has reignited the turn based vs. action conversation for FF, LOVE IT! GIMME ALL THE TURN BASED!
It looks amazing from the trailer, I was stunned. Haven't been this excited for an RPG in years!
Same here!
Maybe the Paintress is painting them to a better life. I could see some crazy plotwists like that.
This was game of the show from Xbox’s presentation and immediately jumped onto my most anticipated games list for next year. So hype!!!
This looks amazing. I somehow missed this from the showcase. Thanks for sharing, David!
The Lost Odyssey music makes me want to play that turn based RPG again 😀
That storyline feels like "Annihilation" by Jeff Vandermeer. A very good thing!
Looks like Shadow Hearts for the modern era. Exciting!!
"I'm so sick of these two artstyles. This game looks so unique!"
Uhh, are we seeing the same game footage?
One of my most anticipated games of the last few years.
I miss Legend of Dragoon button presses. Persona 5 was flashy with its turn based menus but Legend of Dragoon did keep me engaged.
I really really hope this game is even better than we all think it will be
You always put really nostalgic background music on!
When I saw the active battle system with all the dodges and parries my jaw literally dropped. I hope they can deliver what's shown in the trailer. Absolute must buy next year.
Honestly, that synopsis looks like something that is from the pages of a mature Final Fantasy game! Turn-based is BASED!!
When someone will ask me how Legend of Dragoon or FF IX should be made? I can point my finger to be similar with Expedition 33. Hats off 👏
Thats why competition is so important esp in gaming industry.
The game that impressed me the most during this week end conferences
Omg almost 80k - you’ll make that and beyond - love the content 😊❤
Thank you so much!! Next stop 100k!!
This is what Final Fantasy games should look like (and play) nowadays.
There's something in the art direction that really talks to me in this game. Fingers crossed it will be good ! 🤞🤞
There’s nothing like a good action RPG i’m a souls fan so i do prefer them but i’m still hyped for expedition 33
Very cool.
Havnt been so hyped by a trailer and story in years. Still have healthy skepticism but as long as they execute, they got this in the bag.
The game looks very promising. I hope it lives up to its potential.
i'm not a big fan of turn based RPG, but I love the art direction so I can give the game a chance. I'm hoping they have a story mode/easy mode.
I am so pumped to see more from Expedition 33. Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later in 2025 and hopefully we get a demo sometime beforehand to try out that awesome looking combat!
Turn based will always be functional if they have good mechanics
The fact this game has Clive's voice actor Ben Starr too!!
Wow this story has me super hooked! I cant wait to try this out
That story description has me ready to go wishlist this right now
The way you described this game sounds like the PS3 reveal where the guy said this game is historically based on war in China and then he hit the giant enemy crab at his weak point to do massive damage
Stylistically it looks amazing. I just hope it isn't a quick time event extravaganza.
You should talk about Skald, bro. New old-school RPG which is super fun, immersive and turn-based as well.
what i really like in rpgs are their story tbh... if its turn or action i dont care.
This looks pretty good. I'm going to add it next to Lost Hellden as things to keep an eye on.
Somehow, I missed Lost Hellden and just now looked it up. Thank you for giving it a shout-out!
I was slightly bummed we didn’t get Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and to a lesser extent FF9. But this game looked amazing and went up towards the top of the list of games I’m excited for! I prefer turn based over action, but I can totally vibe with a mix of both
Its given heavy lost odyssey vibes as something unique and different which xbox truly needs
Personally, with the way It looks and the bit of story. It gives me "What if From Soft made a JRPG" vibes, which I would love if they did. Thank you for introducing me to this game, David.
They did. Enchanted Arms almost 20 years ago lol.
@fineva8291 I own and have played Enchanted Arms. It's not exactly what I had in mind in my comment, since Enchanted Arms is a monster collecting game like pokemon/digimon.
It's by far my most anticipated game. I can't wait to play this!
Before the trailer even showed it was turn based I was into it and then when the gameplay section came in I was hooked
I absolutely cannot wait to play it!
We GOTTA support this one!
This looks a really cool game. Thanks for talking about it David! 😊
