Amazing lesson and great honor to learn and dedication to Prince music .
Prince came up with the Purple Rain progression, but Wendy played it since the song that is on the album is the live performance at Fifth Avenue.
*First Avenue
well only 4 blocks off lol
Prince came up with the riff, yes..but he felt that he "heavily borrowed it" from Journey's Faithfully. .He called up Jonathan Cain and said “I want to play something for you, and I want you to check it out, the chord changes are close to ‘Faithfully,’ and I don’t want you to sue me.”
The song was “Purple Rain,” and upon hearing it, Cain not only had no problem with the changes, but was blown away by what he heard. “I thought it was an amazing tune,” Cain said, “and I told him, ‘Man, I’m just super-flattered that you even called. It shows you’re that classy of a guy. Good luck with the song. I know it’s gonna be a hit.'”
awesome. i can watch your lessons all day. every time i unplug my guitar, i play one more lesson, and have to fire it back up
Steve has not asked me to do this... I have never met him... But... you NEED to buy his video lessons with tabs, etc... maybe he can provide link. Hours of instruction and took me to next level and I've been playing 20+ years!

Great tribute, And as always a great lesson. Will you be doing any other Prince songs? I would love to learn "Computer Blue" from you.
Thanks.
+Pete G. Thank you! If you guys want more Prince I can do it!
the Purple Rain version on the album is taken from a live at first avenue in 83, it's not a studio version per say, the orchestral parts R overdubbed by clare Fisher at sunset sound studios after the One off performance.....wendy Melvoin is playing the intro chords....
WoW!! I'm local. I shoulda taken lessons from U. But I'm hoping to move back to TX after all these yr. here. THANX for ALL the free lessons U have on line.
Michael
+Michael Schroeder You are welcome!
Thank you for the info on "I could never take the place of your man" I had it close just couldn't figure out the D minor part sweet!!
+Jim Jerome You are welcome!
g r e a t j o b. nice topic to commemorate Prince. well done
Good tutorial. I like the James Brown percussive influence that you talked about on "Kiss" and "1999." To JB, every instrument was a drum.
I thought the first single note run in Let's Go Crazy was Bb B C C# (1 2 3 4 on the A string.) thoughts?
Th rhythm part in Purple Rain was played by Wendy Melvoin and the recording is actually live (with overdubs later), from her first appearance with The Revolution. I think on the first chord she actually plays a low Bb, so x10311, which is quite the finger knot. They're totally Joni Mitchell chords, but done in standard tuning!
I love for you to do a lesson on purple rain solo. There are so many different versions of it on youtube.
You are awesome! Question though - so I can play any instrument pretty much, but I really seem to struggle with guitar... why is this? I play everything by ear, but I can read music, I just don't like too... does it matter what kind of guitar I learn on? What I mean is, I bought a cheap electric and a cheap acoustic would it be easier to buy a more expensive one? Also I think I have short and stubby hands, does that matter? because it looks like your hands are a lot like mine and you play beautifully...
AWESOME..... I'M PLAYING IT NOW OR TRYING
another excellent lesson there so hard to find. please do some solo lessons
+Chris Gardner Thank you! You can find more lessons on out GuitarZoom channel!
Thank you for this 😀
+David Willoughby You are welcome!
Hi Steve. This isn't related to this video. But I can't seem to be able to request a song on your website. I keep getting an error message. I was hoping to have you teach Tarot Woman by Rainbow. I can't find the music anywhere. Thanks.
Bad ass music!
Thank U
what you effect use in purple rain please?
Thanks for posting this. Nice work. I've gotta ask...what kind of camera are you using for this video?
Thank you so much!
+darkgrape You are welcome!
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man has my favorite Prince guitar solo, not his best but for some reason it's my favorite
I agree mate. Would greatly appreciate a solo lesson.
simon hillier When I saw the movie Sign O' The Times and I saw him play that,it just seemed he played it with nothing but emotion and feel and it just stood out to me in a "Wow" kind of factor when I first saw it.You can't teach that kind of feel to someone in a lesson,it's just something that happens when it happens,he probably never played it the exact same way twice.
markyncole watching and listening to many of his solos over the years, few sound the same twice. Whatever the emotion and feeling at the time seem to take him along different paths. Have you read the interview with Billy Gibbons when he talks about meeting Prince and taking guitars for two hours? One of the things Billy mentions is how difficult the opening solo to Doves Cry is. He just can't get it perfect. He asked Prince about it and he replied "Yeah that one gets me too" :)
So I may never sound like Prince, but I'd still love a base solo lesson to slave away at and maybe one day put my own feeling into it :)
markyncole fyi, I just bought the sheet music here for USD2.99 and it has the whole solo tabbed out. It's a start! :)
www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/HL-127025.html
simon hillier Cool, improve those same notes instead of exactly as tabbed out and try and add your own thing into it.
thank you so much for your videos, they are fantastic for helping a poor beginner! could you do a "how to" for seminal Aussie band The Saints' song 'No time'??
Do "When Doves Cry" 😍🕊☔️
what pickups are in that? t
Please, coukd you do a tutorial for down on me by jackyl?
can you play welcome home sanitarium -metallica
Can You Do Cream, And When Doves Cry
+Myles H'orry Will see what I can do!
Great lesson..Purple Rain was actually recorded live for the album and it was also the live debut for guitarist Wendy Melvoin she was playing most of it
the chord progression in "Kiss" is all 7's.
No it's not. It's just root and 5th played on a synth that is being triggered by a hi-hat (which is how he got that funky rhythm that makes up the bulk of the song.) Listen to the recording and tell me if you can hear the 7th at all.
Where's the follow up from am I evil?
Purple Rain 4:22
Name the chords. I play D9 and E9. Thanks
Thanks for watching, Alfred! :-)

@@GuitarSongsChannel Thanks
Electric chair, from the Batman soundtrack...you want riffs you say!!!
Nuff said
Yesss!!!! Joy In Repetition
Your F is a bit off- It should be an F9. And the your Eb needs the G in it at 8th fret making it an Eb9. Peace
what song?
That's right, but it's downright impossible to play the Fadd9 barre chord on a regular scale guitar, at least if you don't have giant hands. Wendy Melvoin played it on a short scale Rickenbacker on the record.
Actually it was Wendy Melvoin
a guitar teacher showed me how to play 1999 and he played it much differently.
Yeah I can't do all those bar chords, just have to stick with open
no power chords in this song dominant 7th chords homeboy more pocket in that rhythm
1999 james brown
strange osud thats guitar...not loud enough?
Let's go crazy sounds a bit off you r not playing it correctly
uhhh Yeah Dude that's a NO nothing about what you played here was Remotely funky and there's No Clarity so uhhh what are you Doing
Hi Kyle. Thanks for your comment and feedback. The point was to give some ideas on how to play some of Prince riffs. Never meant to replicate them exactly.
@@GuitarSongsChannel it is To Replicate the Actual Parts Tone clarity and All Anything else is dusrespect to The music itself However it is your Channel so
I know this comment is out of place but can you guys put up a video or a tab on how to play Nuclear Throne - Last Breath? I would love to play it on the acoustic guitar but my hearing is the worst so i thought i would ask pro players for a lesson.
i thimk its wonderful that lesson can be shared.I get to see so many good guirarist play.
