    Three of us went out backpack hunting during Colorado's 1st Rifle Season of 2014. The drainage started out full of elk but also full of hunters. Nasty weather blew in on just the second day, creating quite an adventure.

    Nice video showing what hunting is really like most of the time - a lot of good effort and hard work, but no antlers or meat to bring home. I am so sick of the videos that mostly only show the kill shot, a lot of high fives and a hunter counting the tines. It gives the wrong impression of what hunting is all about. I live and hunt in Montana and have killed elk here. I think you have the right idea about going back to the same place and building on your previous experience. Keep up the good work and good hunting!

    Great job just found your channel you are 100% correct every area is different you have to know the hunting patterns as everyone with horses and or ATVs if allowed will go deep and those in great shape sometimes it’s luck sometimes it’s taking a long shot.. great video 👊🏻

      No, I never really got excited for it. Half of the fun is climbing around in the mountains!

    Later in the season, elk will be pushed lower by the high country snows

    I hunted archery OTC FS land this year and after 3 days at 9500 ft. el. I packed up to go home and on the way out I hunted an afternoon at 8500 ft and found all the elk there by the main road in a little area that was so obvious and no-one was there but me and the elk. One of the rules I read once is to look for niche areas close by that seem like they aren't out of the way enough. The elk respond to pressure and go where there is less. Thanks for posting the skunk vid. We all go through it but no-one likes to admit it.

    As A public land Colorado elk hunter of about ten years , One thing I found out is heading back in those remote hunting locations only lead to finding more and more hunter and less and less elk. I stated hunting around the trail heads and found small ridges only like a mile from the road that those guys would go right past following the trail. One place in particular there was a herd of about thirty elk that would cross the trail everyday at about ten oclock in the morning. We ended up talking multiple elk from the same herd for years . Another thing I have heard is to never shoot the lead cow. Because that lead cow will lead those elk back to the same places year after year. Which over time you will be able to pin point funnels transfer point benches that are being use and why they use them. Especially when there is a lot of hunter activity.

    What your not going to come to Oregon, lol. Great video I love watching your videos to pickup up on filming techniques so I would love to see a video going over some footage and camera gear and the settings you used to get those shots. If you ever do decided you want to do a Oregon archery trip let me know I would love to hook up with you on a backcountry hunt I am thinking the Eaglecap wilderness checkout and give it a thought.

      Have you seen this video? How to Film Hunts (part 1: camcorders)
      I was nervous about how this one would turn out. I used the Sony NEX @28mm and shutter priority at 1/125, and "landscape" preset for all of the intro driving shots. I then left that camera in the truck to save weight. Brought only my Vixia. After the snow hit, it got too moist and stopped working. All the clips starting with the tent interviews were cell phone video on all auto settings, which explains the bad audio. On the last day the Vixia started working again and the distant mountain zoom shot was with that.
      Eagle Cap would be a blast. If I remember right, that's where Cam Hanes started out hunting, too, according to his book. Do they give OTC tags for non-residents or draw?

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors 10 років тому

      DIY Sportsman It is a OTC tag for archery and I read Cams book as well I think that is why I want to go do it so bad, but I will only do it if I have solid partner that I know can handle it. Which from watching your videos I am confident you could, plus with your video skills I think we could make an epic video.

    Great job with your narrating and synopsis at the end. The bull that "old timer" killed was a beast..!! Wow...
    Public land hunting has some extreme difficulties. The first year my dad and I went rifle elk here in Utah, we located a large herd of elk while spotting from a rugged back road. They were over a mile away. And in the snow. We knew the rugged road we were on would head up the mountainside towards the herd, but never get close enough for a shot. We headed out to sneak along an adjacent ridge to get close enough for a shot at the very large herd bull. After hiking for 20 minutes or so, and having cut the distance to about 500 yards, we started making a plan to get to where we would have the herd within range. It looked like it was going to work out very well. Just then, we hear an engine. We look down the mountain to see a jeep stopped near our truck. We look through binos and see they are looking up the mountain at the elk herd. Then, they start tearin up the road as fast as they can. When they get about halfway to us, they stop, and we watch as they start flinging bullets at the herd from over 800 yards away... They never hit a thing. They never even went to check. We did. Didn't find any blood. And the herd was gone to the next county...
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

    You picked a good area; however, time of year and weather definitely affects the elevation you should be hunting within. What season did you hunt? I hunt roughly an hour west of where you were in 3rd season and you typically won't find bulls in the timber (higher elevation). I hope you go back with the knowledge you gained and tag something! (pun intended) I believe you're from the midwest? I killed my first whitetail in 2010 near Tigerton, WI so I hope to go back again soon and hunt deer in your back yard.

      I've decided to go back to Colorado, around the Holy Cross wilderness. I'd love to check out other states too but the rest of the group is heading to Colorado and it just becomes too expensive for a solo elk trip out west. Not to mention 4 days of driving.

    I've looked into going out there for Elk during the archery season. The tags are OTC and the pressure is a lot lower. What unit were you hunting?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  10 років тому

      We were in 12 but close to the border of 23 I believe. I don't think they have OTC for those units but the draw is about 100%. I'd have to check.

    have u ever thought of hunting in a drop camp with an outfitter? I recently got done with a drop camp elk hunt in unit 12. we saw about 50 elk and multiple bulls. First day I climbed up the mountain and got a 400 yard shot at a 5x5 bull, but didn't come up with. Great video btw!

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  9 років тому +1

      We looked into it. For every success story we read about there was also stories of people getting dropped into areas with no elk and being limited in their ability to relocate to find some. The drainage we were in, for example, had a big outfitter tent. Other factors were the cost. Since the entire trip was less than $1000/person including the non-resident tags, going with a drop camp would have doubled the cost. I think the benefit of going with a drop camp is obviously nicer accommodations and having horses to pack out meat, but DIY has the advantage of learning more through trial and error, and being able to hunt without relying on somebody else to get you onto the elk. I can definitely see why it's an appealing option, though.

      As is the case with most OTC units until you spend enough time there to understand how the herd responds to pressure in a particular drainage.

    After still hunting back up the ridge . . .didn't see any signs.
    Not surprised. You NEVER camp in the same spot you hunt in. You wind up pushing the elk out of the area for as much as a mile. Rookie mistake.
