When she start saying "Look around, everywhere you turn is heartache, It's everywhere that you go" she refers to the scene in the US at the pick of the AIDS pandemic, she knew there were people daying in the hospitals, there was no treatment, no cure, nothing, the medicine knew nothing about it, and the Reagan administration didnt wanted to put any money on it to start the research. Madonna herself went for a visit in one of those hospitals to see that reality by herself. It was the darkest era of the gay community. And this song in some way was a message, for all of those who fell, who were lost and sick or hopeless. She stood up for minorities from the very beginning and this song is a testament of that i think. Thank you for doing this video, it really interesting to see this song from someone else's view (:
Agreed. At the time, the mainstream vilified the gay community. Madonna on the other hand, advocated for compassion for, understanding of, acceptance of the gay community. She advocated for safer sex, use of condoms etc. She made me aware of the risk of unprotected sex.
You are spot on about the “message” of the song but missing the back story of what voguing is. Voguing was born as a style of dance in the underground gay balls. The balls were a place where mostly black and Hispanic gay people competed often in drag and over the top outfits. The dance style features a lot of posing, as if you are a superstar….hence the reference to old Hollywood.
Love your interpretation of Madonna's message here. Her message in this song is meant to be uplifting. Voguing allowed folks to escape their day to day and lift their spirits by dancing and expressing themselves. Voguing also gave the dancers a chance display confidence on the dance floor and it was open to everyone inclusively.
Madonna is very a underestimates song writer. Her songs always stand for something , also conveying big messages in her videos. Please you must watch Like a Prayer. Vogueing is a type of dance a cult in the black suburbs of Harlem, late 70s and 80s. Too long to explain but it's like a dance off
Yes! She is still around, alive and kicking! I saw her live last year, just before Covid ruined everything. Would be nice to see you react to more Madonna and her latest album 'Madame X'.
I was a little kid when this song came out and I was already in love with Madonna. Of course this song made me crazy but I didn't really understood the meaning until many years later. Even nowadays many people think of this as a superficial song for runways. But its a far deeper song. To understand this perfectly you could see Pose ua-cam.com/video/_t4YuPXdLZw/v-deo.htmlsi=IKxViaGYDSWg2RDh On season 2 the line "look around everywhere you turn is heartache. Its everywhere that you go" is clearly understandable cause the topic is aids spreading all over NYC Hugs from Buenos Aires, Argentina
"Voguing" was a dance style born in the underground gay clubs in New York in the early 80's, where gay black men would dance imitating poses from the covers of the Vogue magazine. It was a very secret, underground thing, and the black and latino gay community would gather at this clubs to dance and forget about discrimination and hate. That's where the drag queens did their lip-synch battles and they did voguing battles. Madonna knew about this and she decided to support them, so with this song she brought voguing to the mainstream, and she brought the black and latino gay community to the spotlight, giving them visibility and acceptance for the first time. That's why Vogue is the greatest gay anthem and an iconic moment in history that changed culture. Please do more Madonna! "Oh Father" is a great song, she lost her mother to cancer when she was 5 years old and after that her relationship with her father was hard. That song is about that.
She's referencing the golden age of Hollywood because for decades (perhaps less so nowadays) it served as inspiration for the gay community, particularly in the context of the 'balls' when the community -mostly those from minority groups, though everyone was/is welcome- would turn out for a bit of good voguing and the looks and glamour were often borrowed or inspired by old Hollywood, with its myths and its gods and goddesses... It's no accident the whole video references the same era.
Yes Madonna is still making music and touring. Madonna is a living icon and the highest selling female recording artist of all time with 335 million records sold worldwide
Great reaction mate, I'm generally a rock and electronic music fan, not really into pop wholesale but I'm definitely a fan of Madonna as she has transcended music genres for years, you should check out her 'less commercial' songs from the Erotica and American Life eras, there were even 'rock' remixes of the American Life singles and she includes more acoustic and rock performances in her later live performances from 2001 onwards. Definitely a more interesting artist once you get past the poppy commercial songs ;)
Yes.. Your take on it was right.. Its about seizing the day, being proud, strutting your stuff, being who you are.. and proud of it with homage reference to Hollywood glamour but essentially celebrating and showcasing a dance style that emerged in the gay clubs Vogueing.. essentially a dance movement born out of that positive proud mindset... She is still going.. Released a new album in 2019 and there's another coming and film of her life..
If you want to learn more about Vogueing you can check out her performances of this song from the Blond Ambition Tour, 1990 MTV VMA Awards show, the Girlie Show, Reinvention Tour, Sticky and Sweet Tour, Super Bowl Halftime Show, MDNA Tour, 2019 50th Anniversary Stonewall NYC Pride Island & the Madame X Tour. She introduced it in her 1989 MTV VMA performance of Express Yourself. And you can learn more about Vogueing on the documentary called Paris Is Burning and the TV show called Pose.
Madonna hadn't done anything since 2015, then she released Madame X in 2019 which got a lot of positive reviews from music critics but failed with the general public.
There's a TV show called Pose that stars Billy Porter. It shows the "houses" in NYC. These had a head person the people of the house called mother or father. These houses had gay people and transgender that were on the streets usually because they had been kicked out of their homes. They had a club that the houses would dress as a theme and pose against each other. This was also happening when Aids was prevalent. The show is fantastic and Billy Porter is incredible in it. I saw him when he appeared at a LGBT event. I was ushering and it was heart touching hearing his story. They actually used what had happened to him in the story line of of Pose towards the final few episodes. You should check him out. He has won an Emmy, a Tony and a Grammy so he is pretty incredible.
Great reaction. If you want more positive messages from her work, check out Like A Prayer video and Papa Don't Preach. The goat. Decades ahead of her time and still relevant today.
To me it's like a love song to classiness and mojo. We all like to act cool in some way or another, and she's basically saying just do it. Be cool. Vogue yourself in the mirror if you have to. And I think it's valuable. It's kind of a human thing we all do.
Could you please react to her performance of “Sooner or Later” live from the Oscar’s? I think you’d like it and I’d love to hear your take on that performance!
