  • Archibald Stansfeld Belaney, Wa-sha-quon-asin, or Grey Owl from the Ojibwe.
Although english, he spent the latter years of his life with Iroquois Gertrude Bernard (whom he later called Anahareo) under the guise of Grey Owl, working for the Canadian Parks.
In his articles, books, and films he promoted the idea of environmentalism and nature conservation. In 1931, He wrote several articles for the Canadian Forestry Association (CFA) publication Forests and Outdoors
His life, although it was somewhat romanticised was made into the film by Richard Attenborough (who had seen Grey Owl on his visit to England in 1935-1937) Pierce Brosnan does a very honest portrait of the complex man... who was ahead of his time in his campaigning for the stopping of the rape of our mother earth for financial greed and gain by a minority ruling class.
Now, more than ever his words that some things are not for sale, has an ominous ring like that of the bell that tolls for humanity as it now stands at the abyss.
May we follow his lead , be it more than 70 years later by confirming that we are the children of this earth, not the lords of it, and act accordingly.

His books are unforgettable. I have read them all. In Tales Of An Empty Cabin, he wrote a stunningly poignant chapter, titled 'The Tree', which I regard as his finest writing. It traces the life of a jack-pine - and the events around it, during more than 500 years, until the arrival of 'civilization'.

Awesome and beautiful movie by a great director Richard Attenborough and an underrated actor Pierce Brosnan. Lots of interesting and beautiful scenes of Canada too.

It was never released in the U.S. apparently. I wonder why it wasn't.

This is a wonderful video. My aunt was Native American. I have to admit it brought some tears to my eyes. There should of been more speeches. Who had the right to do what they did. Thank you so very much for posting this

It's from the film, Grey Owl, not actually the real Grey Owl speaking.

I agree with you it in my opinion too. Very human of him, plus great supporting cast.

Archie Belaney (Grey Owl) was, as he says ..just a Human Being, not really worthy of the "celebrity" interest he was given.
But his message is crucial now to our freedom to live on this Earth. If we do not heed the directions of how to live with her, then we shall be enslaved by the system at least or perish in our own greed.

Finally, with any luck that is about to change, because now we finally have seen behind the curtain and the emperor is stark bollock naked.
Time to take heed of the words of Archie Grey Owl

Thank you, yes the real star is the "wilderness" that is Lake Temagami, Bear Island and North Bay Ontario.
Lets pray it stays that way.

Thanks for the first comment. In the film Floyd Red Crow (bless him) said a man becomes what he dreams of..and you have dreamed well. May we all have good dreams!

I have a real problem with racist remarks, blaming colours of skin because of the state of the world. There are Four Directions of Humanity, Red, Yellow, Black and White.
Some of the white race have been guilty for a large amount of the "mass greed" and taking the "wasichu" attitude.
It is those in authority we have to look to removing, not because of the colour of their skin but because they are evil and want to rule the rest of us.
I think Researchx's comment was from the heart to be true.

Not racist remarks, just putting information out about how the control of the world has been taken by the hands of a few elitist minded people (who happen to be of the white race) Yes all are capable of crimes against humanity, and each colour, Red, Black, Yellow and White are not alone in being culpable.
But the history of the conquest of the americas is basically a question of "white" supremacists against the "red" aboriginals.
( See also Australian, African and Indian colonialism.)

No not my account.... Ill have a look to see what has happened to them.
Unfortunately the "mainly white empire builders" are culpable for devastating vast areas of the "3rd" world..i.e. very other part that is "non white" for their own gain.
Italy, Spain and the Catholic Empire wiped out huge numbers of people in the name of religion... Women in their millions were tortured and murdered in the name of witches... and they were white also.
