In this episode, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, Easter eggs and history of Bubsy games! The original Bubsy game came out on both the Super Nintendo (SNES) and Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), as well as PC gaming platforms. The marketing effort behind the game was massive, and there was even a Bubsy cartoon pilot made to promote the game. Among other accomplishments of the series, Bubsy 3D: Furbitten Planet is often cited as one of the worst games of all time. Through our analysis of the game, its gameplay and beta builds, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts from the making of Bubsy and have its history explained.

if you move too fast, you are supposed to bump into things. That's why Sonic health system is genius, they allow you to continue playing even if you touch enemies without you feeling that game is too easy. So, after studying hours and hours of Sonic... he decide to go with one touch death.

Wow. Hearing all of this makes me feel actually bad for Bubsy. The second and third games were near-essentially sabotaged by staff that literally hated the game and intentionally didn't try...
travc765 Because the release date got announced too early.
This was also the issue of Accolade being less and less competent throughout the 90's and Bubsy 3D being the pinnacle.

No. Wrong. They weren't. That's not what the stuff in this video says. This is the sort of fantasy you see a lot of people on the Internet use as an excuse. What happened was that that they were put on a project they didn't like, and they tried their best at it, but they understood the project was doomed and the concept was bad.
@@Dorian-_-Gray wtf are you talking about, it's obvious they were sabotaged because they hated the character. That explains why the first game is the better one on the franchise

Its a shame too I feel quite sad about all of the problems that the developers had for this
I don't. They knew from the start that it would be an uphill battle, eventually becoming the butt of the joke. Instead of simply taking advice from professionals, they fought the giants and failed. Crash looks exactly like a middle finger aimed at Bubsy, being a bandicoot for starters, and wearing pants. Nobody wanted anything to do with the bobcat.

imagine developing the first idea of its kind game ever, and then you look over in japan and they were busy making the best game of all time with the same idea.

Especially when they tried a3d one. 😂 To compete with Mario 64 good luck still one of the best n64 games ever.
That ocarina of Time and smash brothers and GoldenEye are probably the best right? Then trying to have siphon filter compete with GoldenEye had no chance... Poor guy.
In an alternate universe Mario is forgotten and people are celebrating the release of Bubsy Odyssey.

So he was basically doomed from the start. It's impossible to do a good job if your not even slightly passionate about your work.
So let's talk about the hate of Bubsy of the developers. At some point towards the end of the development of the first Bubsy game, Cyndi Kirkpatrick was brought in to wrap up the design of the game. As stated, Cyndi would be the designer of Bubsy 2. According to Berlyn she hated Bubsy and at one point had the Bubsy plush hanging by a noose with a pencil stabbed in it's head. This to me was insipid because the first Bubsy game did bring in a lot of revenue for Accolade. My theory is that it did do so well and with Accolade as strapped as it was, Bubsy used a lot of the resources not allowing for other projects that Cyndi wanted to work on. In the end, Cyndi's only project as designer is Bubsy 2, and on her IMDB she is only listed as a tester for other non-Bubsy related games. www.imdb.com/name/nm1950125/

It's more like the teacher gives you an assignment for a project, but it's so vague that it's impossible to tell what they meant by it. So you do your best and wing it, only for the first kid to show off his project has the most amazing diorama ever. The teacher is so amazed that they not only give the student an A+, they also use that project as the standard for every other project from then on. And so you just slink back into your chair, knowing you're completely boned and that your project is a failure, but there is nothing you can do about it.

I get your point, but i don't think your comparison is quite fair. It's not mass murder, it's a subpar franchise. Did you played Syphon Filter back then? It was in fact a really good game. Only Bubsy franchise was doomed, but creators themselves weren't incompetent. Just too small studio with too large ambitions.
And now we have Crash Bandicoot and Nathan Drake. Bubsy was the classical "mistake which will bring you to great success".
Despite the shitty series that spawned from him, I still respect Berlyn for trying to branch out and try something new, and even despite its failure, he kept going.

In the Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales source code the comments were talking about in the Hansel and Gretel stage where they try to hit Bubsy with "Cherry bombs". I think what the developers were trying to avoid was avoiding any references to "Popping cherries". I thought it was funny to see this dialog in the source code so I mentioned that to Faran Thomason (Bubsy FFT producer) when I interviewed him. He got a chuckle out of remembering that.

Music was never an issue for Bubsy games. Not sure about your game, I never played it, unfortunately. I bought once Bubsy: Paws on fire (?) for PS4 and it was awful 😭
To be completely honest, I can't blame Berlin for how bad his games were, it seems that the team gave him hell, he got told to give up, and the people that worked for his games disliked the franchise.

No Berlyn did not know platformer games, but took his creativeness, applied it to Sonic and gave his intepretation. In the end the first 3/4 of the first Bubsy game was Berlyn with the last 1/4 being Cyndi Kirkpatrick. Cyndi (who hated Bubsy) headed up the design of Bubsy 2. Yet another team for Bubsy FFT with Mark Hooley and Jody Cobb credited for level design.
The sad part is the man tried. He researched Sonic for hours on end, but just couldn't grasp what made Sonic great. You'd think the ten hours a day would help him learn the basics of the level design, but instead we get Sonic's speed + crap draw distance.
BrawlTheMan Though, to be fair, the graphical limitations already made Bubsy look a bit like a bunny and if they tried to zoom him out even more, most characters would look unintelligible.
Still doesn't excuse Super Bubsy for Windows though!

Trevor's Gaming Room I went, their percentage of people who drop out is very high and the online instructors are hardly ever available to actually help you. I had a really really hard time. A friend went on campus and had a better experience but I def would not recommend the online courses. I learnt more just looking up UA-cam videos using unity and unreal engines. Lots of that on UA-cam for free.

Holy crap, this video helped me make sense of a thing I did as a kid that always struck me as very weird and confusing.
So when I was in 5th grade or something, I did this custom cover for one my notebooks that consisted of a drawing of Bubsy I carefully copied from the title screen -- I distinctly remember sitting in front of the old CRT TV with the SNES turned on with the game in it. The thing that always bugged me whenever I recalled that is the fact that I wrote right next to Bubsy "π ≃ 3.14159".
I always assumed that was a random thing I did for no reason, but now I realize it's entirely possible I noticed the first password corresponded to the first six digits of π and decided to record that fact. Once again, holy crap! I can't believe I had completely forgotten this.

I was just thinking about Ken Macklin the other day. I had a couple of his comics back in 2000 because I recognized his art style from the Bubsy comic that came with the game.
When I played the first Bubsy all those many years ago I actually quite liked it. And following that game it all went to shit, and especially them seeing Mario 64 was hilarious. The stark contrast between the fluidity of M64 and the tank controls on steroid of Bubsy 3D was astounding.
I've disliked this video simply because of the full sail advert. They are a for profit college, meaning they will cut corners wherever they can to make an extra buck or two. They are not a good college.
This brought back so many memories. My uncle worked at some retail store and brought this game home one day. I played it and loved it, I remember he told me I should consider myself lucky because the game was in high demand and no one had it in stock.

I can tell that Berlyn was passionate about the project, but just seeing how he seemed to be waxing poetic immediately over Sonic's design left me thinking "yup, that's where he messed up" on this, probably the 4th rewatch since the algorithm pushed this video to me

I kinda feel sorry for the devs, I thought Bubsy was cheaply made and had no hear put into it but it seems that people really wanted it to do well and that people put their heart into it. I really wish it went well now and kinda want a return of Bubsy, a good one

I believe that "more than a little shellshocked" didn't describe how the developers' feelings for Bubsy went from neutral to pure hatred, as it seems the pilot episode that they were cringing from may be the major reason why their feelings for the character changed. That, and Bubsy 3D may have caused Accolade to go out of business.

Did you know? Bubsy isn't ALL that bad. Sure, it had the bullcrap in some levels (like the river taking you to the beginning of the level) but it's not that bad.

I really liked Bubsy 1. I had a genesis and it was one of my favorite platformers as a kid. This isn't that subjective of an opinion, because the game has a bunch of qualities, arguably beating even the mighty Sonic 3 on some aspects.
Wow, Michael Berlyn got screwed over so hard. He really wanted to make something he had a passion for, but EVERYONE shot him down at every turn. Hopefully the new Bubsy game does well.
I actually feel bad for the poor bobcat now...his game was doomed from the beginning. (I low key like his character design and it would be kind funny to see exclamation mark on his shirt change depending on his mood)
Full Sail is a scam. Husband has a degree in Video Game Design and works as a Software Engineer outside of the gaming industry, a job he could have gotten with a much cheaper degree from a public state school. Instead we're saddled with over $100k in private and federal loans.
Man, from the way they described the creation process, it sounds like a lot of people were really working hard to make this work...

B Diez, it's seriously unhealthy and damaging to the political climate to villify everyone as a nazi or white supremacist because they've expressed opinions that are different from yours. There is such a thing as a scale to ideology. Truth is that when one side of the argument becomes so ingrained in society and culture that it's then considered the norm, people on the other side of the spectrum are automatically seen as extremists. With all the recent surge from the right in America and Europe, it's more important than ever to not see things as black or white, and to listen to each other. I mean actually listening, not just hearing what the other person is saying and then interpreting things in a way that's convenient to you because you're afraid of other viewpoints. I agree, it's a lot easier when you categorize everyone who disagrees with you as monsters, but it doesn't help anyone and only creates more extremism to match the kind you create.
