The bouncing ball. The foundation of your animation journey. Don’t underestimate its importance!

The bouncing ball shot is impresive, you can practice the fundamentals and tell a story at the same time with a bouncing ball. Thank you Jean-Denis Hass for this FNA.

SUCH A EMOTIONAL STORY in just a few seconds, and by just gray faceless models. Compliments to Cameron Miyasaki

Can anyone tell me how a bouncing ball, pendulum, flour sack Animations will transfer into Character Animation. Why is it so important everyone tells me to practice that most. I know it may feels silly for you guys but i wanna know the connections between them
    Thanks in advance

abdul fahim Not silly at all! The reason for those is because they are simple in terms of rig complexity, especially the ball, so you don’t get overwhelmed when you start off with animation. At the same time, they allow to work on and understand super important aspects of animation. For the ball, you get at least timing and spacing, so that you can portray weight. There’s more once you go into character balls with squash and stretch, overlap if there’s a tail and giving the balls life and personality vs. just showing physics. The four sack mimics arms and legs and a root and chest, so it’s more complex but yet still not as a complex as a full human rig. It allows you to practice pantomime on a wider scale than with a ball.
You wouldn’t want to start your learning journey and go straight to a full human rig. Way too complex.
At a later point, you can replace complex rigs with balls in order to figure out general placement and timing, to simplify things and then swap back to the actual rigs.
But generally, when students of mine show me their reel from previous classes and the body mechanics are way off, I ask them to do a bouncing ball in a week. It’s a hit to their ego but pretty much all the time the balls lack weight and the spacing is off. So the fundamentals haven’t been mastered yet. If you can’t animate a heavy and light ball, how are you supposed to be able to do it with more complex rigs? You can skip that part.
      Hope this helps!

@@jeandenishaas this is helping me also, tremendously. I made the mistake of going straight to human rigs and got stuck without any progress. Thank you.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. It cleared the confusion for me. Now I think I know how I should at least start the whole process of learning animation. Thank you.

Hey! Great examples! I had a question about the tail overlap. What's the best method to offset the tail? Do we just select the curves and shift them by 2 frames? I don't think that yields a very organic result.
    PS: Cool t-shirt! :)

      Harshal Ashar Thanks!
I think shifting frames can be a quick start but then you’d still want to go in there and pose out the tail on specific frames.
