  • Kemi Badenoch has been criticised after suggesting that statutory maternity pay is too high.
Ms Badenoch has since said she was misrepresented but her comments have triggered a debate over the UK's maternity system - and whether mothers are receiving enough.
Statutory maternity pay has two parts.
1/ In the first six weeks of leave, mothers are legally entitled to 90 percent of their average weekly earnings.
2/ After that, they can only get a maximum of £172 per week.
Now, the employer pays this but they can claim back the majority from the government.
And last year, the government spent 2.8-billion pounds on maternity leave.
