Best Video Games of 1991 (Volume 1)
I would put this year up there along with 1998 as one of the best in gaming
FLASH BACK WAS MY GAME HAD THAT DRAGONS LAIR FROM PC VIBES BACK IN LATE 80'S EARLY 90'S
Dragons Lair was ace. I love a lot of those types of games. Prince of Persia, Another World, Oddworld etc.
Was recently thinking about the game Flashback but couldn't remember its name! I was going nuts trying to find it out! The You Tube algorithm/AI is nuts! I played on the mega drive, lots of fond memories have just resurfaced! Thanks Mate!
I'm so happy I could help you find Flashback again. I know how you felt as I've had the same thing with a few games from my childhood. I'm also glad to see another Flashback fan.
Flashback was and still is the muts nuts. Which version is your favourite?
The Mega Drive version was the first I played of it and would still be my favourite. The remaster is pretty good as well. I have it on Switch, PC and PS4. What about you?
@@GamesByYear A fan then. Been too long since I played them on emu or console. My brother thought the MD vsn was better.
@darrancoyle8394 I'm definitely a big fan. The remaster is often on sale. It's worth a play today. I picked up the sequel as well. It's decent but not even close to the original.
Happy New Year, mate. A lot went on in 1994, it was an interesting world then. Music was good, clothes were baggy, smoking was okay, etc. I wonder what 2025 will be like? I like the mutant hockey game. I never played it but it looks good.
Happy New Year to you. I'm hoping 2025 is good for gaming. There's a few I'm looking forward to.
@GamesByYear Hopefully a good year.
@AndrewEdwardBailey hope so. I'm adding a bit more footage to these compilations when I can. This wasn't too long was it?
@GamesByYear No, it was fine. The parts one, two, and three are great, too. I have been toying with the idea of posting my gaming footage. Some of the official races, instead of just driving about.
@AndrewEdwardBailey post away mate. I find youtube to be a good outlet for my gaming .
DOOM! What's your fave weapon?🔫
Double Barrel Shotty or Plasma Rifle. You?
@@GamesByYear MINI GUN (nothing mini about it), big T2 fan.
Mini Gun, Thats so you! Good choice
@@GamesByYear Gets through bullets like cheerleaders go through kneepads.
@@darrancoyle8394 Its called a 'mini gun' because its smaller version of the giant Gatlings that goes on things like A-10 Warthog and warships. It was first used in a movie for Predator in 90s, its too damn heavy and eats too many bullets a second for any real life military use. But Predator You never forget the scene where the dude carrying the mini gun mows down a patch of tropical forest in rage after the alien snatched his friend.
Do you have a favorite ridge racer? I think mine is 5
I'd probably say the first one or maybe 4. Most of my good memories are with those.
Mine is Revolution. "Grip" sold me.
Been playing Rage Racer lately. The music still makes my ears puke.
Sorry for uploading this one then. I've always loved the series and its music.
@@GamesByYear Don't be. The RR series is great. I hate the music because I was forced to by d1cks at school. Morning and afternoon for 5yrs.
Wow, that would be torture. I can definitely understand. I want to add all my games to this video series. Any games or years you'd like to see me show some love to?
@@GamesByYear Yeah! The Syphon filter series PS1, medal of honour series PS1, fear effect series. Loved these when I was in college.
I love all those games. I have them recorded from years ago but I've been thinking about redoing them and getting new footage.
I would say a Nintendo fanboy Decided the #1 spot but i did play that one a Lot at the Time . not sure if i can say its the Best
Someone likes the little blue guy!
I normally favour the little plumber guy, but I thought I'd not show bias this time. 😆
Great idea showing in 1 minute different sections of the game.
Thanks. I'm sitting on a mountain of gameplay I've recorded over the years. I'm trying to put it to good use.
Cool idea with the 60 second clips. Looking forward to seeing the series
Thanks dude. I'm trying to find a good balance of what's fun to make and easy to watch. Think i should attempt to do these for my whole collection? 😆
@@GamesByYear as long as it's fun to do. I'd love to get an idea of what's in your collection.
I'll try to add a good mix. I basically record everything I play these days. The only issue is that I give myself a lot of work to do. Lol
I don't like the first Sonic the Hedgehog. After Green Hill Zone it's very slow.
It's a methodical platformer, but still a great game in my opinion. 2 is more consistent with speed but harder.
It is harder to get to full speed in the other worlds unless you are a full on speed runner, but I still think it's a fantastic first entry to the franchise.
Interesting list. Castle of Illusion is quite fun and challenging.
Captqin Commando and the Turtles Manhattan Project had those baddies wearing hoods. Those were also the badies in Rolling Thunder on the ZX Spectrum. I wonder what the story is behind that character.
They were on some drugs when making James Pond.
That might have been the magic ingredient for great games back then. 😆
What a quality year!
I was still playing away at NES and Mega Drive games because the SNES hadn't released for me yet. Definitely no shortage of classics though.
Starting off the video with that distinct SNES twang, 1991 was a good year for gaming.
I love the sound of 8bit games.
It's definitely an upgrade from the bleep bloops of the Atari era which are also nice sounds.
Every single one a solid classic. I'd have to go with R-Type as my favourite. Looking forward to Christmas mate?
R-Type is always awesome mate. The version on Master Sytem isn't the best way to play it but it's amazing they got it running on such basic hardware. Not really feeling Christmas this year for some reason. What about yourself?
@GamesByYear I can take or leave it this year, too. But I suspect I will feel better about it in a week. I have been playing a few games, mostly driving, but I have downloaded Indiana Jones and I'm yet to get around to playing that. It looks good.
What driving games have you been playing. I'm back into Gran Turismo 7 on the PS5 pro, it's a beautiful game. Indiana Jones is one I want to play too. I've been playing Farning Simulator and Death Stranding mainly in the last week or so.
@GamesByYear I had a go at Crew 2, which looked good. But I find it is nowhere near Forza Horizon in quality and fun. And it is far too complicated. So I uninstalled it. Then I played Moto GP for about a week but it does get very samey. So I binned that, too. Went back to Forza 4 and 5. Forza 5 has gotten bigger faurly recently, with much more to do. Good game. I really want Gran Tourismo 7, but XBox says no. Which is a massive shame. All of the footage I have seen is incredible. Saying that, I have just this moment remembered my son has a PS5. Yes!!! And he hardly uses it. I can get some time on that this coming year. I might have a go at Indiana Jones tomorrow and I will put some game play on my YTube channel. See what's what with it. We all waited long enough. Any projects in the pipeline?
SNOW BROS! One of my all time faves. Rarely had anyone to play it with me. Fun none the less.
Yeah, I used to play it with random people in the Arcade, now I play it alone. 😆
@GamesByYear It goes quicker with a pal.
Loved Desert Strike but I would always run out of fuel ⛽🚁
Same. It's a game where I spend just as much time in the menu checking fuel, ammo and missions. This was definitely a game I preferred on Mega Drive over the SNES version.
Good stuff. I actually still play Super Mario World every now and then.
Umm i hate be that guy but didn't double dragon 2 on nes come out november 1988?
Arcade in 1988. Famicom in 1989 and NES in 1990. Unless I've got it wrong.
I mind Duck Tales but on the GameBoy.
Gameboy ports were awesome. Especially Capcom and Konami games.
I could not recall golden axe for the life of it. I loved that game way back in the day though :)
I loved it in the Arcade but loved it more when I got the Mega Drive version at home.
Wonderboy 1 was an arcade fave. The 2nd was legendary(on master System).
I was lucky enough to play both of them back then. Good Times. I'll try to capture more master system games for future videos
@@GamesByYear Loved playing Street Smart in the arcade. It was a loaded coin muncher but I loved it. The mega drive vsn was very watered down but fun none the less.
@darrancoyle8394 i haven't played the Mega Drive version yet. I'll add it to the list. I'm mulling over whether or not I should use the games I list to make Console and genre specific videos?
@GamesByYear All welcome.👍
@darrancoyle8394 cool cool. I'll put out a few snes, Mega Drive and nes only lists first. Feel free to through extra suggestions for list videos.
Lots of love for this list. My biggest takeaway was how distinct Konami's soundtracks were back then. So good.
Konami didn't have a bad year in the 90s.
TMNT MANHATTAN PROJECT . LOVED PLAYING THIS ON A WEE HANDHELD.
Was that one of those old style LCD handhelds?
@GamesByYear Some sort of money mini portable 8bit system. Got it on eBay.
Nice one. Some of those can be good. I got one from amazon that came with a lot of old classics.
@@GamesByYear I love rhe myarcade mini bad dudes machine. It runs the old nes vsn but I love that as me and my cousin used to play that on 2P at sleepovers.💪
@darrancoyle8394 that sounds cool. I have yet to buy any of the mini Arcades.
Arguably the best year ever for gaming.
I was sad seeing the N64 release everywhere in 96. I had to wait until 97.
What an amazing amount of variety that year. Love the video
Thanks dude. I hope you are keeping well.
@@GamesByYear I'm doing well. Same to you. I hope all is well.
@bigedwerd that's good. All well here. Just struggling with video ideas and motivation as usual. 😆
Nintendo couldn't let violent hookers be in their vsn if the game.pu$$1€$.
DKC2, Killer Instinct, Yoshi's Island, I remember it being the best summer/christmas ever
Everyone was talking about PlayStation and Saturn and there I was still happy with my SNES.
Loved Alien#3 on mega drive but damn, it was mustard!
I definitely didn't use the infinite ammo cheats in that one. Lol
Wipeout showed the capabilities of the PlayStation and was silly not to develop it further imagine Wipeout on the ps5 that would be awesome
I wanted a PlayStation after playing the demo of Wipeout in friends house. I would love to see it on PS5 as well.
No Saturn games? The Big 3 Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop and Sega Rally were all released in 95.
I don't have a Saturn anymore, unfortunately. Mine died about a decade ago.
Amazing 1995. The 2D at its finest ever : Donkey Kong 2, Chrono Trigger, Yoshi's Island....
2D games definitely didn't go down without a fight.
Comix zone and Ristar should be mentioned for their quality too
I was still happy with my Mega Drive when the Saturn was released. My next Sega console was the Dreamcast.
I love 1995
Are there any games you'd recommend for this year? Just in case I don't have them already.
Crono trigger best
I wish Square would release it for modern consoles. Especially the switch.
What's been your fave DOOM game so far?
It would be this one on the PlayStation. I loved the atmospheric music and it having the best of Doom 1 and 2 levels. What about you?
@@GamesByYear DOOM#3 is my jam. Loved the atmos, other characters, PDAs weapons lockers. So immersive. The shotgun was completely gimped tho.
I remember playing Doom 3 on the original Xbox because my PC couldn't run it well. I did love the atmosphere too. The lost Souls used to terrify me in that game. Guess I need to go record Doom 3 now. 😆
@@GamesByYear They did a remaster 12 years ago for most platforms. But you couldn't bind your weapons to the dpad.
Yeah. I have the BFG edition on PC and PS3. I somehow preferred the original when the flashlight was separate from the weapons. You had to choose whether you pooped yourself with either a weapon or flashlight in your hands.
Do different platforms count? I found that both Earthworm Jim I and Lion King played much better on Genesis/MD, though you had listed SNES/SFC. Both systems are great of course, but those two really stood out with Sega.
I just listed the versions I captured for the video. The Sega Mega Drive versions are awesome too.
