- Jonny and Andy took the Leica D-Lux 8 compact digital camera to Soho and Regent Street in London to put it through its paces. Packed with a 17-megapixel sensor, a fast zoom lens and 4K 30p video recording, the Leica D-Lux 8 has a lot to offer.

I am surprised by the number of negative comments and some of those totally inaccurate. This is not a rebranded Panasonic, and there are no plans for Panasonic to produce one. The sensor may be a few years old, but it is still superb, and 17m pixels are more than enough for 95% of photographers. Go and pick one up, handle it, try it and then maybe you will be qualified to be critical.
Highly likely we will see a panasonic version soon
@@jukeboxjohnnienot happening, they’ve previously said they’re not making compacts any more.
The lens, the Sensor is the same, as onto the LX100 Mark II Panasonic Lumix, go figure. The lens was already onto the original 2014 released LX100 Panasonic, which was being released now over 10 years ago. It's not perfect, fuzzy at times, at the edges. Flare resistence is suboptimal, too. I'd love to see a full, manual linked 24-75/1.7-2.8 zoom into the D-Lux 8, not electronically zoomed in or out - just like any cheap digicam, since >= 20 years...
True. But people like to rant over things they don’t know anything about.
@@marcp.1752 Although i have the Panasonic LX100 using high quality 43 mm PL filter solves the flare problem for the most part more of a problem with this camera is perhaps dust and the fact that i need to repair mine due to it having grime and dust in the lens assembly giving me an error and lens therefor getting stuck. I don't think this issue has ever been addressed neither by Panasonic nor Leica. Yes its somewhat true that the lens is fuzzy at the edges but that's with most compacts with wide lenses at F4 its the sweet spot i found for sharpness
So many negative and uninformed comments. Great camera! I am enjoying mine.
Great to hear!
It feels great in hand and looks a lot like the Leica Q3. When shooting in DNG, the colors are very similar to those of the Q3.
Thanks for this info/review. I like this Leica offering. I would like to see more tests of the image quality. But looks promising.
Good info on a camera I have on my buying list, can you tell me which model of tripod you are using?
Hey! Thanks for watching :) The tripod in this video is the 3 Legged Thing PUNKS Travis 2.0 with Airhed Neo 2.0. You can find that here;
www.wexphotovideo.com/3-legged-thing-punks-travis-2-0-with-airhed-neo-2-0-black-3020185/
Gitzo - it's their video tripod!
It's nice for a 7+ years old Sensor (MFT 17 MP from Panasonic) a 10 year old lens design (2014, Leica 24-75mm equiv. F1.7-2.8 Vario-Summilux), but a new body, new firmware, new EVF, updated rear LCD, and Leica Q3 menu style. It's fine, but the new 25 MP Panasonic MFT Sensor with C-AF and also a D-Lux 8 body with weather sealing, and best new designed 24-75/1.7-2.8 lens could make this camera so much better, especially for 1650 EUR. Contrast detect AF is much slower, than it could be - vs phase detect AF.
/edit fixed typo :)
Great insights! The updated body and features are definitely a step forward, but it’s true that newer tech like a phase-detect AF system and improved weather sealing could take the D-Lux 8 to the next level. Your point about the aging sensor and lens design is spot on-there’s always room for innovation.
@@WexPhotoVideo Just right - and i really wished for, Leica would have done the D-Lux 8 into this way. Then, it would be much more worth the 1650 EUR premium price, for a compact, fixed lens (albeit zoom) camera.
Nice review and sample photos looked great thanks!
There is a additional hand grip accessory from Leica.
I had the D-Lux 7 when it was launched in November 2014. Unfortunately, the Leica D-Lux 8 is a little disappointing compared to the D-Lux 7. You would have expected more technical advances, but the new features are hardly worth mentioning. Instead of real improvements, it seems as if a few steps have been taken backwards. Too bad, I had hoped for a real upgrade! And I can't see paying €600 more for it. You'd be better off looking for a Lumix 100 II. It can do the same. The only plus point would be the new “Leica Like” menu.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s always disappointing when a new release doesn’t meet expectations, especially when you’re hoping for significant upgrades. Hopefully, future models will bring the improvements you’re looking for.
My girl has one and is very happy with it. It seems odd that one brand has just about a monopoly in a camera segment. Odder still that brand is Leica.
Glad to hear your girl loves her Leica D-Lux 8! Leica does have a unique position in the market with their premium quality and design. It’s interesting how they’ve built such a strong following. If you have any questions about it, just let us know.
How about the autofocus. I hated previous D Lux and no one talked about it. It takes forever to focus and shoot and I wonder if DLUX8 fixed it.
Thanks for your question! The autofocus has seen some improvements which makes it faster and more responsive. It’s definitely worth giving it a try if you can get to one of our shops :)
Good useful review, thks.
Glad it was helpful!
It’s an evolution, not a revolution… and that’s good. They also use old sensors in their top spec cameras and guess what? They sell easily. I personally feel Leica cameras are a bit like a Porsche 911, they keep what works and upgrade what doesn’t.
informative content thanks Wex.
Thanks John
Now Olympus seem to have given up on the EPL10 Pen and similar cameras, this seems to be the only option
I’m pretty sure that m4/3 is close to dead. I’ve just sold all my lenses. Panasonic are only making physically huge cameras now, the same size as their FF models. Olympus have sold to a small company that is likely to go broke.
Is there any difference between this camera and the LUMIX LX100 II, apart from maybe 5-6 years in release date??
Better EVF, Leica UI and a new processor. The rest is mostly cosmetic.
@@michaelbell75 Once a person has a Lumix LX100, as I do, the real difference between that and a D Lux 8 is the person. It ain't what you got, it's what you do with it... I also have a D Lux 3, but my preferred digital compact is my XZ-1. I just sold 3 cameras, so now I only have 6... I enjoy getting the best out of them. They all have their Plus Points and their Minus Points. I started 68 years ago and am happy to be still learning, still trying to do better.
@@michaelbell75😂😂😂 BETTER EVF NICE JOKE
MMM, tempted!
It's stellar - thanks for watching!
If it phase detect af it would be a nice camera
Just a rebadged Panasonic LX100 ii introduced in 2018. Same sensor, same controls, etc. And at a MUCH lower price.
Different controls and menu system and a much HIGHER price than the LX100 MkII. The menu and physical controls are now very like the Leica Q series. You could not mistake this for a Panasonic design although it is probably made at a Panasonic factory and retains the lens and key features common to the LX100.
@@hedydd2 That's the problem. Basically a Panasonic LX100ii in photo capability since sensor and lens are the same. So basically paying a LOT more for the Leica name and a new menu system.
Not really no. The user interface is vastly different and reason enough to buy the camera. Its integration with the Leica app on your phone is so good, your phone and the camera basically merge together and can operate really seamlessly between each other. So in reality the user experience is very different to the older Panasonic.
This is almost true, but only on paper. Technical data does not take photos ;) I have both of these cameras. Lumix for 2 years. Leica for 3 days. The photo effects obtained with both devices are VISIBLY different. I won't judge the filming - it doesn't interest me. I won't be surprised if this little Leica becomes legendary.
@@achillesmjb then do not buy it but stop whining like a spoiled brat 😜
Does it support leica looks?
That's the question nobody can seem to confirm. But Leigh & Raymond Photography says, _"The Leica D-Lux 8 "retains all of the Leica DNA, like the natural color science ..."_
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like every single one of the sample photos could have come from an iPhone if I didn't know any better. I'm sure the shooting experience is great, but oooof, that price...
😂😂😂 its a m4/3 such a tiny sensor
I check some DNG files from that camera, not even near to iPhone or smartphone photography. Micro four thirds sensor is huge compare to 1 inch and below sensors of phones … btw if you watch on a screen even a photo from a Sony A1 looks pretty like an IPhone 😅
They don`t give you a grip so they can sell you one.
And if you have an LX100 the grip is included
Use an iPhone 15Pro with 24mp and Leica’s new D-Lux app for iPhone instead 😊
Sorted
That's definitely an option but there's nothing like the real thing!
Sensor size is vastly more important than megapixels. And even at micro four thirds, the sensor here is a lot bigger than the iPhone.
I assume it’s just a rebadged Panasonic camera… that’s no bad thing as I once owned the D-Lux 5 but in today’s market, I’d have thought it would have had a larger sensor (both megapixels and size) as 17 megapixels is limiting to be honest.
Problem is, it's an old Panasonic. Why buy this for higher the price when The LX100 II exists with better handling? I don't get it.
7 years old Panasonic, also known as crap for today’s average standards.
Why is 17 megapixel limiting ?
@@r423sdex yea why not 12 megapixal and charge $2K for it lol
@@r423sdex see how much the quality of the image is after editing and cropping drops…
4/3 in 2024 are you serious? At this price point and weight there are even full frame options.
Sorry Leica.. this was nothing to buy in 2024.
Ferrari exterior with a VW bug interior
STILL no phase detect AF in 2024 UGH
Leica selling a new camera with an eight-year-old sensor and auto focus system is proof that Sony has a complete monopoly. Buying such a camera is violence toward the photographic arts.
shooting a bad picture with latest sensor tech is violence towards "photographic arts". choose the equipment that you can bound with and produce the best result is the way
There's nothing wrong with '8 year old tech'. I haven't seen a bad review and the age of the tech hasn't affected the camera or photographers ability to make beautiful photos, and to print those up to really large prints (16"x22") with no noticeable drop off in quality. I suppose it may not be the camera for someone who wants to be able to reel off specifications and expect people to be impressed though.
@@huwprice881 you haven’t seen a bad review because they aren’t reviews their influencers who have been given pre-release copy of a new camera in exchange for advertising for the new camera. You sound like a marketing department moonlighting on UA-cam as a real human.
@@t-money561. I'll take the advice of photographers who have had hands on experience over someone who's not even seen one, thank you.
@@suloea sure, it’s good to challenge yourself with 8 year old tech and no ability to print large format. I admire you’re willing to handicap yourself so other commercial photographers can get the job.
Made in China
Most things are these days so what is the problem with that? Nothing new there…
@maniecristobal -- So are most Apple products; so is the Fuji X-100VI, etc.
Who cares !
as iphones and nearly every other camera 😜
