@John Maxwell I lost it at the look of restraint on your face when the oil spilled through your fingers.
I'd love to see the big engine rebuild to a 128cc. Full on detailed with the how's and what's and why's.

Does that mean you did or did not upgrade your oil pump? Send you did not because you would not have known about the problem if you bought your bike in 17?

I have an 18 Street Glide Special and when I brought it in for stage 2 upgrade, they added the oil pump at the same time so I didn't have to bring the bike back in, cause at the time there was a back.order for the pumps and as they were taking my air filter off, the shipment came in, so it was a good day when I got mine put in. Another great video Mr. Maxwell, see you in 2023, 😎😎😎

There is a video out there that shows the oil pans from the softail lineup vs the touring lineup. They are physically different. This accounts for the issues specifically with the touring models. At least according to that video. I have a 2018 Heritage 114 and have had no problems. Anyway check out the moto mick a vs b video

It's good to see another video from you. I'm glad your shop is doing well. You have shown the one downside to a mechanic who does good work and charges reasonable prices. The downside for the customer is you're always busy and it takes time to get something done. The upside for the customer which is well worth it if you know your bike is fixed correctly and you're not paying an arm and a leg. The downside for you is most of the time you have more work than you can handle.

    My 2019 Ultra 114?
    50K miles, meticulously maintained.
Modifications- HD Stage 1 , TAB slip ons, everything else is stock.
At the dealership for over 3 months for the transmission oil transferring into the primary, third fix attempt .
Also major internal engine damage due to the oil pump partially failing. Symptom was almost 2quarts of oil being consumed every 5K miles, dealership was advised several times of oil consumption when it was at a quart every 5K miles and stated “that’s within spec”. It didn’t smoke, and it wasn’t noticeably down on power, but failed the compression leak down test at 72% on the front cylinder. Great motorcycles if you ride under 5K miles per year, and you better have the ESP warranty!!! Damn I wish Victory was still in business!!!

I get only 2 month of very hot weather here but to keep it short the engine oil grade will have lots to do with the engine oil pressure . You being south I would suggest you try Castrol 20 W 50 Motorcycle on your own bike Think of what the engine oil does , Clean Lubricate and cooling the engine Higher grade mean higher pressure at higher temperature better seal the piston rings and the overall area of concern you mention internal to the engine . Doing this will increase compression giving you the extra kick for my best price in town

Congratulations John. Small business is what makes this country go around. You are doing great. Nothing worth doing is ever easy. I won’t say that as you grow it will get easier because it won’t. One piece of advice. As you grow and add employees. Add really good ones. Someone who can run that place in your absence. That will take the pressure off. One other thing. Diversify. 👍

My 19 RGS has been sumping. Even had the trans rebuild. Stumped again after the factory warranty was up but my extended warranty that I purchased will not cover sumping. I have to blow something up in order to get it fixed. Sounds like the extended warranty won’t fix something that Harley needs to do a recall on. I’m frustrated, thinking about going back to the softail.
    Btw, glad to see ya!

Hey John, I happen to be the lucky owner of a stock, 2018 FLHR. 25k service I had super fluid transfer. The dealer serviced the bike. 15 minutes down the road and it started blowing oil out the exhaust so bad I couldn’t see the cars behind me. They going to upgrade the oil pump but I worry that won’t fix the issue.

I recently bought a used 2019 shrine edition. It was manufactured early in 2019 and according to the factory it probably does not have the newer oil pump. The new oil pump comes with a cam plate. I think the oil pump may have been replaced. I understand there are some markings on the cam plate that indicates which oil pump is present. How can I tell which oil pump may be installed. Great videos!!!!!!!

So I read most of the sumping issues come from stage 3/4 builds. I've got a '17 road glide that is just stage 1 with 8200 miles. If I don't ever plan on doing cams or going beyond stage 1, is the new oil pump necessary?

    • @chris.davidoff
      @chris.davidoff 3 роки тому +1

As far as I can tell, the original oil pump wasn't designed for you to stay above ~4k+ rpm for a long time. People ripping their bikes by cruising above that rpm were the ones finding themselves in a sumping situation. I don't know this for sure. If you drop your rpm's to below 3k or idle, the oil will return to the oil pan and you won't sump it. Most people do this, which is why its been a rare condition
