Brian can be really quiet and terrifying in I Claudius . We had a little sample here . The famous Black Russian Codpiece makes its appearance and Edmund actually seemed to be doing ok as the Archbishop .This first incarnation is absorbing , has a great cast and its moments , but for me doesn't quite work and I always felt something was missing .Interesting to hear your reaction and it's well worth watching .
He's hard to spot, but the dying man at the beginning is none other than William Russell who, I believe, is credited as Russell Enoch in this - his full name being William Russell Enoch; which is why his son, Aldred Enoch, is so called. Also, given he's lying down in a ludicrous false beard sounding nothing like Ian Chesterton, you can be forgiven for not spotting him. Also, the actor playing the shorter of the two knights appears in most series of Blackadder, although I can't remember if he's in the third one or not.
During the period in the history of the Roman Catholic church called the Great Western Schism, there were often two, sometimes three popes, each with his own following. The schism, or split, lasted from 1378 until 1417.
Poor, gullible Percy.

It is a fabulous shade of purple! A really fun episode, thank you! ❤

The dying lord at the start is none other than William Russell!
@@DarthRushy i may have just yelped a little and now im kicking myself for not recognising him! 🤣
There’s always a joke in the order of the credits. This episode was “in order of holiness” which is why Baldrick and Edmund were so far down.

I honestly had no idea about that but it's interesting to hear about.
The first Blackadder series is the weakest link in the show as a whole. 2 and 3 are the better ones.
Each to their own. Series 4 is far better than 2 in my opinion...
